  • Beauty beyond words!!

  • I'v never heard Nigel do anything badly. I've been in love with his music for 20 years and I was lucky enough to acquire a front row seat when he played in San Francisco in the late 90s. At one point, he stood right in front of me for such a long time. I finally smiled and he returned the smile and moved on. He just wanted to make a connection with an audience member. He takes my breath away.

  • Unspeakably beautiful, sad and heart-wrenching. I don't play any musical instruments, alas, but when I hear this tender beauty it enters me completely. It is a deep communication which we share and no words can take the place of it..

My father used to play this on his violin in the forties when my brother and sisters and I were children. When I grew up I asked him why he stopped playing. He said it was because I used to cry.

I still do of course. Thank you Nigel.

  • nice.very nice

  • Violin sings into the human heart, with a human voice--that of a father, or mother, speaking gently to a son who has left home or lost life in a battle. It could also be anyone expressing gently the most simple, natural, yet profound love to another beloved, away, gone, no longer living. Yes Irish originally, but this song/music of sweetness in sorrow touches the hearts of humans universal.

  • I just quit the violin after playing it for 8 years, sense I was seven. And this makes me miss it... i still have it and I just wanna play this song sooo badly!!

  • I love this song

  • QQ...

  • It reminds me of You Raise Me Up at 0:44 - 1:31

    Is it?

  • @blizzardward123 Yes it does remind me of You Raise Me Up, However I do know this song for many a years now and listenening to it more closely now in a different light kinda relates to me now as suicide lyrics at the end of the days....seems kinda sad somehow, not sure why!1

  • Gives me goosebumps in places that I have never had goosebumps before.

  • I am playing this at my grandmothers funeral mass, I hope it sounds this good

  • thank you. sheer beauty

  • wow !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I saw this live on TV being played by Nigel Kennedy and it was one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard...

  • Not to nit-pick, but as an instrumental piece, this is really "Londonderry Air." "Danny Boy" is a poetic ballad written by Frederick Weatherly and is set to this melody.

  • ditto below, and I'm Welsh!

  • 4 minutes and 15 seconds of complete bliss, if I had to describe what Heaven would be like, this is what it's like.

  • This is so good it can't be put into words...makes me think i might actually try and give the violin another go, just so i can play this half as well.

  • @afishcalledjohn I've never even played violin, and I'm starting lessons at age 50. I'll go for one sweet note.

  • Best version ever!!

  • As if a song from heaven

  • Beautiful vibrato!

  • Does anyone know if there is sheet music for this arrangement? This is the best variation of danny boy on the violin I have ever heard, would love to buy a copy.

  • Saw Kennedy stand up and play a little of this for Barry McGuigan once on a chat show. Kennedy knew Barry's connection to this song and moved him almost to tears. Class act.

  • I had stoped playing violin for about 2 years, and after hearing this a couple of weeks ago, i have got my violin repaired, and will be starting lessons shortly. This song brings me to tears. It seems to bring out all that is good and peacefull. I thank Nigel Kennedy for sharing his gift with me, without which, i would have lost the desire to play, and in turn, a part of my self.

  • I love Nigel and his interpretation of this song is just ethereal.

  • i lived at Nigels house for 5 months, and now never see the great man as he lives in poland.......this song epitimises the granduer of a great soul who can be so loving and so down to earth ....a real character who made magical memories for me.... glad to have found this site.
