I saw Sam Bush once. I got him to sign one of my man cards (looks like a dollar bill with a picture of chuck norrises face on the front). He thought it was funny so I gave him another one I had.
The live album "Ice Caps, Peaks of Telluride" has this version with several other great musicians with him. I can't remember who played this song, but Jerry Douglas and Bela Fleck were there.
Sam Bush is The ULTIMATE gentleman, AND the Ultimate mando player, right after Jethro Burns!! Whom Sam Idolized growing up. Who is this Chris Thile seed you guys are talking about. Give him another ten years and then compare him to Sammy. He's still a babe
My fingers hurt just by watching him play on his mandolin ! He sure is great ! Usually I prefer instrumentals but this Bob Dylan cover is very well thought and he is not a bad singer.
sam bush just made this my new favorite song. and i think the world of dylan, but sammy boy freakin killed this!! ps- save the earth so we have a place to boogie!!!
@Jahmoon00 Technically speaking, Chris Thile is probably a better player than Sam. However, Chris doesn't even come close to Sam's level of inovation, creativity and energy. Sam is a much better performer.
@kingbenlucas On the contrary, I am quite familiar with the Punch Brothers. They are phenomenal musicians. They're stuff is some of the greatest music ever created, but only on a technical level. It lacks the beauty that Sam Bush brings to the field. I'm not saying I don't adore Chris Thile's playing. I think he's one of the greatest musicians that has ever existed, and he is mathematically a better player than Sam Bush. But I still like Sam better. Also, I'm aware of how to spell innovation.
Very nice. Fine arrangement and use of motif. This is the kind of stuff you can only do when the crowd is paying attention - learn from this. folks! Pay attention or you'll miss out ... on stuff like this! I like the quote of ABB's "Jessica" at the end too. Just one thing - why the abrupt end? This happens a lot at youtube. Why not let us hear the last chord ring and the fans going wild? Otherwise, this is 4:35 of solo mandolin bliss.
Hi all. Sam would say 'good evening music lovers". He usually does at every show. Yeah, he plays so well, bluegrass, motown, reggae, whatever. After some 20 shows I've never been disappointed. He can play LONG sets.
And nice to see new fans here. Info; National Fiddling Champ at 15 years old, member of Newgrass Revival, with Bela Fleck, John Cowan, Pat Flynn, Later band; Edgar Myer, Mark Oconnor, Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas, Fleck. Sam has recorded with; Rowan, Harris, Ponty, Grisman, Jorma, more.
I couldnt agree more. He is lto the mandolin what les paul and chet atkins are to the guitar. Have you ever heard of his song Majestic? It is on King of My World. First song I learned on mandolin.
Majestic was written by a local in johnson city about a shoe shine man at the old majestic theater . When iwas a young boy i used to still coins from him on the ground around his shoe shine area.
nice playing style and a great voice... dylan covers are notoriously hard to pull off well but this is great. The fills are fantastic, too. Just found Sam Bush and will look around for his music now.
This was an AWESOME performance. It doesn't get any purer than that. Am I the only one to catch Bush throwing in those "Jessica", (Allman Brothers), licks near the close of the song?
P.S. Funny thing is, I never liked Dylan's versions of this tune, and I dig Dylan.
I recently saw Sam live and an now a true devotee what a high energy performance. Well worth seeing, he is great showman and travels with extremely talented artist.
Do you think you could possibly email me the tabs for the song part? I don't really care too much about the solo part but I'd like to cover this tune for my band and i'm having trouble with it. It'd be much appreciated.
How many other pickers can make a mandolin sound like an entire band? There are a lot of great mandolin pickers these days but Sam is still right up with the best of them.
Saw Sam and NGR in the 70's while I was in college and he and they are all still some of my favorite musicians. Met him in T-ride in '05---great guy too!
saw him live last year and saw him jam with some other awesome mandolinist how ever you spell that, i cant remember his name. my mom listens to a lot of bluegrass and i like it a litte im more into heavy metal but this guy is freakin awesome
this...this is what amazes me. People can relate to this guy so well, no matter what background, and Im happy to see for once, a person who knows that there is more than one type of music out there.

fatheadluv 1 year ago
@fatheadluv Yep! I think that was intentional...Allman Brothers love moving back and forth between I and IV chords.

@OfficialEricDurham true, but it's more than just the plagal movement of the chords. The overall resemblance is unmistakable.
