The opening shots are great teasers. Because it is done like flash-flash-flash, the viewer hasn't enough time to digest the goings on. But it all looks intriguing. What's more, in the early series episodes especially, after the the opener we typically see a nice car calmly parking and Phelps walking to the drop off point to get the tape and photographs. This serene beginning is excellent juxtaposed with the helter skelter events we saw and know are to come.
The first Mission movie wasn't too bad but two and three were just the Tom show. Where's the ensemble cast? Mission was supposed to be intrigue, suspense, trickery, not just kicking and blowing things up.
@elmerfusco Tom Cruise with an ensemble cast? No way. He wants to be the center of the attention, the lone hero. You're right, the show was about teamwork, people working together.
The TV series was definitely superior to the movies (rather contrived antics). Sunday Day George was my favorite actress and one of two beauties of this very popular series. Too bad the Tom Cruise movie versions were so deplorable.
What I find amazing about this show is that there was no character development at all, and yet it still managed to be exciting and absorbing. I mean: the principals hardly ever showed spontaneous emotion; it was all a question of logistics for them, and yet everything was worked out so carefully, and timed so precisely, that the plots managed to be suspenseful anyway. A remarkable show. Nothing else quite like it.
You're right about that! Character development was sacrificed almost entirely because there simply wasn't time for it with all the plot intricacies. There was also a conscience decision to avoid character development to keep the mysterious nature of the IMF team intact.
i need to know the name of a cartoon TV show which was some kind of parody of Mission Impossible-the old TV show-yet with 5 animals this time !, the funny cartoon was made in the 1970s i think, it was nice with a smart cat as the leader. So WHAT WAS THIS SHOW'S NAME ?!
This show was masterfully done...you never could figure it all out until it was played out in front of you!..VERY clever! the actors were all great!...Even though we didjn't get to know them!...But I MUCH appreciate them none-the -less!...GREAT show!!! Barbara won best actress in a dramatic series 3 years in a row for this....martin SHOULD have as well! The man is brilliant! Barney could do no wrong!...All males and Barbara...were hotties!...just me...jan
Oh man, awesome. Awesome show and quite clever for its time. I remember as a kid watching this and thinking even then, unknowingly, that Lupus was so hot lol.
Graves, Landau, Cinnamon Bain, MOrris and yummy Lupus had it going on and this show, well, is/was a classic and hope to see it somewhere on cable soon.
Awesome job. I have always loved this show since seeing it in reruns on FX back in the day when I was a kid. Thank god for DVD. Hopefully, after releasing Season 6 and 7 we'll get the late 80's revival version on DVD too.
Another fantastic job, Crocoboxer...you seemed to save the best clips for the last shots before the cast intro. In this one, Phelps (who looked great in the sweater, btw) appears to slap Cinammon. Was that the case?
Yup, he sure does slap her. Of course, it's all part of an act played out to fool a hit man/mob boss type into sympathizing with Cinnamon. The last shot in the majority of the opening segments was usually something physical: someone getting slapped, punched, karate-chopped or shot. My personal favorite is a second season episode in which the final shots shows Phelps tossing a pump shotgun to Willy and then he looks down at it and pumps it - ready for action!

Mr.Peter Grave (aka) Mr. phelps was indeed the Master Mind of the IMF team. You
can't be but amazed by the ingenuity of specifically planned out plots that all work
together in the end.

Poor Barbara Bain was always getting slapped about in this show. It says a lot about attitudes towards women back in the sixties and seventies.

Wasn't he (Nimoy) playing someone called Paris? Or London? Some western European capital...
