I think Robbie Robertson is a very over-rated guitar player. He's never does anything particularly melodic or interesting on his leads, and he's only an average singer...I don't understand why he's considered to be so special....when there's way better players out there
@WadeMacKinnon I will admit that 'music from the Big pink' is a classic record, but I think that the other members of the Band had as much a role to play as Mr Robertson. Maybe I'm put off by the kind of 'too cool for school' attitude that he seems to give off! I'm listening to players like Eric Johnson, David Gilmour, Mark Knophler so when I see less melodic players I cant help but critique them harshly.
@Glamorgan1000 He did take a minimalist approach to his playing. For Robbie, less was more. He did know his way around the major, and minor pentatonic scales
He's a terrific songwriter, which is why he's rated high in alot of people's books. Not as a guitarist, as a songwriter.
I’ve seen him at other Clapton gigs on stage with him, playing actual Clapton numbers, and quite literally playing Eric off the stage.
And that aint an easy thing to do. Robertson plays like that as he wants to play like that. He can actually play 50 different ways, at a truly world class level
Agreed. Pretty much a douche-nozzle with the way he's always treated his equals from The Band as if they were his subordinates.....but he's one hell of a guitar player.
