EXACTLY! It's the BASS, the brass and the backing vocals that make this song special! One of PW most 'black' songs, and for me one of his best! Peace.
Even though I got the 'Complete Adventures' box set, 'Confessions of a Pop Group' is the one individual Style Council album I ended up buying. It's so unlike anything Weller did prior with the group and really needs to be heard in its proper context. I also feel this is where Weller's voice finally started maturing to the point where he could fully grasp this sort of material. As a result, his solo period which eventually followed TSC proved even more rewarding.
Love this song!!! I used to have the album "Confessions of a Pop Group" on cassette and played this track and their version of Anita Baker's "Angel". Good times!!!
Great find to a great video! "The Style Council" always has been and always will be a class act in and of itself! Now if anyone out there will just do a "YouTube" vid for the song "Luck" that would make my "Style Council" dream list complete! Amazing job and thanks for sharing it with all The "Stylists" out there like me! Cheers! :)
One of my favs of them, and also on those later years of the 80's.
Still my favorite is "Have you ever had it blue". Especially, the version included on the soundtrack of Absolute Beginners. Simply wonderful!

Hi 71gmf,
Totally agree with you...Such a shame that this only made No.41 in the UK?!?
One of their best singles but Paul's left a legacy of great music in The Jam, The Style Council and 18 years of solo masterpieces!!!
I'll die happy listening to Paul's work!!! :-)

Is the "phantom presence" of Dee C. in this weird somehow?

Clapton, Sting, Phil Collins...
Anyone who rocked in the 70s and wanted to do something artsy and poppy in the 80s fell into this trap...
But...
I love it so much. Great fucking song!!!!

Braddy,
Subtle difference being. The 3 you mention, are total and utter - musical pap. Weller on the other hand - is a genius. Please catch up. ;-)
