@Jazepentz there were PLENTY of gays back in the day, they stretched all the way back to ancient greek times...you hear stories about male + male lovers. 50-60 years ago was an INCREDIBLY religious time, only now, when we as a society are becoming more accepting, do people feel comfortable coming out.
I'd also like to point out that penguins, flamingos, giraffes, dolphins, and more, all show homosexuality among their species.

Oh, there were plenty of LGBT folk 50 years ago; they were just being secretive since they could get arrested, raped, and murdered without their abusers getting any negative repercussions. Things are a little safer now and more people are accepting these days, and LGBT individuals are sick of hiding in the closet and want to be heard.
You'd be surprised at how much gay literature there was 50 years ago and how many gays were hiding then. It's just that it was all underground.

@Jazepentz We live in a world much more willing to accept gays now than 50 years ago. I think you'll find that homosexuality was more hidden, discouraged and squashed down. More and more older married men and women, who have lived as "hetero", are coming out now that it's becoming safer to do so.
Now, I will also point out that people are still very predjudiced against GLBTs. Gwynn and Matt Shepherd are good examples of that. Why on EARTH would someone choose a life like that?

I have long held the belief that MOST homophobes are actually homosexuals who are venting their frustration with their own homosexuality. You forgot the main reason. And that is because many that are homophobic have been sexually abused when they were children. And the shear thought of 2 males doing sexual to each other brings back memories of trauma. Plain and simple. And as for the arousal, it's called fight of flight response, which dates all the way back to the neanderthals. So that is not some new discovery.
