@coltharpnicholas Ah, yes that could be right. This is a tough topic though because we're not sure exactly where the mind resides or exactly how it affects the brain. It does have an affect on the physical brain, I agree, but I don't think that limits it to a physical realm only. I'm not really religious either, I just try to makes sense of what God is to each person and how he affects us in a physical world. It's a very complex scenario. Every culture seems to have their own version.

We obviously have differing views, and that's fine, but we can't ignore scenarios where people have actually died for a short time, only to return with stories of watching their surgery from above, listening to conversations in other rooms, speaking to loved ones who've passed, etc. Some even get 'life reviews'. We just can't simply ignore this, as these folks are the best (and only) witnesses for after life events.

Basically the whole video is an argument from ignorance. That we don't know, but that perhaps there is a god that makes sense and because there might be, there probably is or there has to be a god.
Your first point is that someone probably has the right answer is spot on. In fact, many people have, those who claim that there is no god. A later point that the big bang needs a cause and its cause has a cause can be applied to god as well. Who created god and who created that guy.... Then you compare not understanding god to not understanding how phones work. But clearly phones exist because we see them and use them everyday. This is not the case for god, who has never been seen.
Final clarification: The assumption I'm making in some of my arguments is that alot greater number of things are claimed to be real than actually are. It is therefore not a choise between say, god or not god 50 50. It is a choise between god or an unknown number of yet unimagined explanations each sharing a fraction of the odds, which makes the odds of god(or any other claim without evidence) an unknown number less than 50.
Have you heard of the belief in Zeus or Thor, that people couldn't come up with an explanation for lightning as an alternative to Thor so therefore thor is real? It is the 'God of the Gaps' fallacy. A real explanation for lightning came later on.

Yes in the case of phones they actually turned out to be real but if you do not use the approach of evidence to avoid casting out the rare real idea that you might have a 'hit' on you wind up taking in 1000 bad ideas for every real one.
The issue here is that god is not a 50-50 choise between two things. There are millions of ideas that have not been given evidence for yet, that I might be 'waiting' for evidence for and then start beliveing in when that evidence comes. Since it is very very impractical to concider all possible claims while waiting to find out which of all the possible things in the world actually turns out to be true I am forced to dismiss all claims. (to be fair, and not have favorites based on my feelings)
If on the other hand people were 13 and there were now phones to observe then yes, they would have to conclude that there is no reason to belive in stories of phones. Because no observation had been made.
However if in the future phones were made one would change that opinion.
And here is the important part, I will belive in god AFTER the evidence for his existence comes not before, just because you can say, it is possible for anything we don't have evidence for to be proven in the future.
Regarding the telephone thing it was an imperfect analogy. If everyone was 13 and didn't know how telephone worked they STILL had proof that there was communication happening even if they didn't know how it worked. Because they saw the phone working, they saw the conversations happening. Direct observation by many people that is repeatable by others is as close to proof as science gets.
What caused the cause of the big bang etc is a known problem. Neither scientists nor us other rationalists claim that we know what the cause of the big bang is or weather it had or needed a cause.
Since we humans have built up an intuition of things needing causes in this universe, because here they do, we do not know if that intuition is correct before the laws of physics were as they are now. Because we have no experience of that our intution about it is flawed and it is 'unkonwn'.

There are millions of ideas that have not been given evidence for yet, that I might be 'waiting' for evidence for and then start beliveing in when that evidence comes. Since it is very very impractical to concider all possible claims while waiting to find out which of all the possible things in the world actually turns out to be true I am forced to dismiss all claims. However if in the future phones were made one would change that opinion.

Regarding the telephone thing it was an imperfect analogy. If everyone was 13 and didn't know how telephone worked they STILL had proof that there was communication happening even if they didn't know how it worked. Because they saw the phone working, they saw the conversations happening. Direct observation by many people that is repeatable by others is as close to proof as science gets.

Since we humans have built up an intuition of things needing causes in this universe, because here they do, we do not know if that intuition is correct before the laws of physics were as they are now. Because we have no experience of that our intution about it is flawed and it is 'unkonwn'.

Interesting comments. One reason that I believe God exists is b/c if He didn't exist, I firmly believe we not only wouldn't be talking about Him(believer or non-believer); but it would be impossible to(and not just for the obvious reason that WE wouldn't exist).

It's all well and good for a creationist to say "Oh but biology is so complex it must have had a designer" but the mark of a designer isn't complexity, it's artificiality, and for everything that exists in nature that's complex we find a constant chain of examples of less complex versions in nature, until it's not complex at all.

I think it explains how the Earth is the perfect distance form the sun and how we came about in the first place from nothing (but God of course). Religions since the dawn of man spoke of real people, real places, and made prophecies that supposedly came true. Your god is needed to explain nothing, and there is no explanatory power in invoking it. Why should your god explain the position of the earth and not another? Why not accept what the science seems to indicate instead? Where is your god hiding anyway?
