  • This sounds definitely like P.J. singing his own self written song."Shame" has just been released (late 2011) on a single sung by girl group "The Refrigerator Cuties" It's also on YouTube. It's definitely stood the test of time!

  • @nawlins4evah The how and why aren't clear but PJ Proby had 2 songs released in 1966 on the Fab label (UK). A website about Fab says they reused release numbers and issued some releases with blank labels. There are pictures of labels with only the word TEST or FAB, or only the song title. One interesting comment is "there were a number of issues credited to the Great Aces - these were not always by the same group though it would seem". Odd goings-on weren't limited to US labels it would seem :-)

  • I found a website about a member of the Moondogs, the band PJ called "his" when he was Jett Powers. This guy recorded on several different labels over the years. One of his releases had his first name misspelled (on the Capehart label) and another had the wrong first name (on Vee-Jay). He also said Vee-Jay released some unfinished demos by accident. Things do happen, don't they? LOL

  • Rontenn's not talking about The Ribbons on Marsh because he can't explain the missing numbers on that label either. Anybody surprised? Does he think Liberty UK released over 10,000 records by 1966 because "I Can't Make It Alone" was #10250? He's not talking about songwriting either. LOL

Maybe he'd rather talk about Proby's golden showers gargle instead. Was that what Proby was gargling in the ITV-1997 youtube video? Gives a whole new perspective to his oral hygiene doesn't it?

  • Rontenn asked about the rest of the 321 releases on Danstone. What rest? The Ribbons did two Smith (Proby) songs #202 & 203 on Marsh Records in L.A. Try to find 001-199 on Marsh. Danstone probably folded after a few flops or got absorbed by its parent. There's a youtube upload of #64-111 on Flavor Records in White Plains NY. Can you find any other Flavor releases? Somebody who talks big about what he and all the fans know doesn't know much about the business.

  • @nawlins4evah If there's a 321 then usually there's 320 other releases that precede it or can't the yanks count? I'm talking about Danstone Records NOT Marsh or Flavor or whatever. I reckon Danstone never even existed! You lot believe anything! Jeff Peters...yeah right! Pull the other one!

  • @rontenn Yanks can count just fine. You think PJ has no reason not to be truthful? He's told so many versions of his childhood and California years nobody can believe any of it. Whenever a celebrity dies he adds them to his list of close friends and Wes Bryan shows up out of nowhere remembering Peter James. Manjadolan removing those comments looks like somebody decided to try a different smokescreen. Herb Alpert? Not a chance! BTW how many know-all PJ fans knew about his golden mouthwash? LOL

  • @rontenn I don't presume anything. You've called yourself a Proby insider in comments on youtube videos. I'm sure you've impressed someone somewhere. You and your chums presume that songs registered to Proby as composer/songwriter on the BMI site were written by him. So sorry to burst your bubble but registration does not prove authorship. EVERYBODY knows that.

  • @grizzlygalore A twerp like you could never burst my bubble in a million years! You & a couple of others are born moaners & complainers.

  • I guess he never found a girl group that wanted to speed sing to a fast tango beat.

  • Why did manjadolan remove his comments?

  • I had this song on an old tape that I purchased 25 years ago.It was a mixed bag of old demo's but all under one name,Proby. At the time I believed it was him & listening to the track now for the first time for many years it does sound like him. Never heard of the Danstone label I'm afraid. no.321? & the rest? Never knew one of PJ.'s aliases was Jeff Peters.I'm not saying he never used the name but it's the first time I have heard it. How come it's taken until now for this news to come out?

  • @rontenn Sorry to say I can't answer your questions if they were directed to me. Maybe someone else can. I'm not familiar with Danstone Records or how they numbered their releases. I don't know what news you mean but I buy stacks at a time and run about 2 years behind cataloguing them.

  • @HurtClassic I meant that no Proby fan has ever heard the name Jeff Peters before. We know all the names he used & also that he was supposed to be Peter James. If this record is from 1959-'61 how come it's taken 50 years for a copy to surface.I think there's something fishy going on somewhaar! By the way PJ.knows all about the fact a few people say he was Peter James,he denies this. The name Jeff Peters means absolutely nothing to him & once again he has absolutely no reason not to be truthful!

  • There's the PJ Proby version uploaded by rockinjac. It's awful but rockinjac and jimmyproby delete any comments except "Brilliant!" or "He's a legend!". It sounds altered to a higher pitch to work as a demo for somebody like Dick Lory. This version sounds exactly like PJ Proby and was cut under the name Jeff Peters. There are other records that sound like Proby cut under the name Peter James. Manjadolan calls this record an interesting find and Proby only remembers he grew up with Elvis.

  • @grizzlygalore In YOUR opinion rockinjac's upload of "Shame" is awful. That version is the one I had on an old tape 25 years ago & I think it's better. Both versions sound like P.J. Anyway this is another great chance for you once more to be negative about P.J. & Manja saw that coming, removed comments & got out before you & one or two others started the same old anti Proby complaints.

  • @rontenn If you like your tape version so much why don't you and Proby get it released on a CD? Worried about something? I see you've told hurtclassic that Proby has no reason to be untruthful and all his fans know all the names he used. His fans are a naive group if they think they know everything about him, his songwriting, and his recordings. Where did you get the 1959-'61 dates? Sounds like the only thing fishy going on is cover-ups of deals that went down 40-50 years ago.

  • @grizzlygalore Simple answer-the quality is not good enough!! plus it would be a puzzle to find out who owns the rights to the song these days. P.J remembers doing this song as a demo for a possible release by a girl group. Herb Alpert on the horn in the background. So us fans know nothing about him & you do!! who's the naive one? Why are you asking me about the year? you're supposed to know everything!

  • @rontenn I'm not supposed to know anything. It's you who struts around youtube claiming you have inside information on Proby and then you can't answer direct questions about it. Were the 1959-'61 dates something you weren't supposed to let slip or did you dream them up? So there's an ownership puzzle with this song. Big surprise. There's probably similar issues with several of the songs Proby "wrote".

  • @grizzlygalore Can't you EVER be positive about anything!? 1959 -'61 was the time that P.J. did most of his demo's..every P.J. fan knows that.Naturally he did demo's other years too but 59-61 were the most productive. I don't claim anything on youtube..you just presume!

  • @manjadolan I don't know if it was ever sold in record shops. Judging by the label my copy was for promotion to radio stations etc.

  • Sounds just like PJ Proby to me too. Hey maybe it's Peter James :-) Some of the lyrics sound like:

    'cause once a moment's lost

the what if paupers pay the cost

    the cost is shame shame

if only you had listened to my star

you might have found it less amusin'

  • If I say it's PJ Proby who's going to show up first, rontenn or Christine what's-her-name? Wes Bryan's too busy blogging about Elvis and his house parties.

Catchy tune but some of the lyrics are hard to understand. Reminds me of "The ants are my friends, they’re blowin’ in the wind" and "it's bound to take your life, there's a bathroom on the right".

Were tango records popular in 1962?
