The tree rings, which they had been using didn't give them the results they wanted, so they used temperature data from thermometers. From Kevin Trenberth, "The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t." This doesn't sound like objective science to me.

The emails prove that some scientists were "conspiring" to keep bad science out of peer reviewed journals. That is all that the emails proved.

"Hide the decline" refers to the decline in the reliability of tree ring data to reflect temperatures since 1960.
