  • This is one the very best performances- EVER!

  • Who was the bass player - the one with off-white pants?

  • bloody hipsters! :p

  • when men were still men

  • the chorus bassline reminds me of thin lizzy southbound

  • take notes. this is how you write pop music

  • This song is great! Reminds me of "Georgia" by Boz Scaggs, a bit.

  • Wow...that's a fuckin great Gibson SG out there

  • @aiames my dad was but it wasn't until after I was born that they realized, it's really just a huge coincidence.

  • one of there best under rated songs

  • AWESOME! Thanks so much for the 'up

  • John Oates GOTTA be the coolest dude ever.

  • @ruderkonge1976

    can play some guitar too

  • OHHHHH Ronisha dont you leave me sittin here in Ohiooo!!!!

  • My name is Camellia and I'm from Atlanta :)

  • @DyingPetals Were your parents Hall and Oates fans?

  • I LOVE this song--didn't know it until I got a double disc Essential Hall & Oates. I can play this one over and over!

  • I absolutely love this song! Thank you so much for posting it!

  • Who is the lead Guitarist? it's not Smith.

  • @Reverendjim1 Hi..It's Todd Sharp

  • @Hokdonfonix Thanks!!

  • OMG...its fantastic to hear this again. Wasn't this from the silver album??

  • @marinac00 Yes, it's from the self-titled "Silver Album" from 1975 :)

  • great duo, great soul music, especially from 2 white guys.lol

  • both have GREAT voices!!

  • they just seemed like they were having so much fun with each other, the whole band did back then. they just seem so much more serious now, but so damn good. Just saw them in Philly about a month ago and they were phenomenal. I can't wait to go see them again.

  • John and Daryl really should do more duets together!!! They blend so well!!! Don't get me wrong I LOVE Daryl's voice and he is an amazing solo singer, but truly he and John rock outstandingly as a duo!!!

  • Jon is a good guitar player and a good background-vocalist, but his lead vocals are quite unspectacular. Daryl is a far better singer, and after all these years can still belt it out...

  • I remember when I saw this concert on tv 2 years ago, they did a song for an encore that I really liked, but could never find. would anyone happen to know the name of it?

  • i found a tracklist for this concert "old gray whistle test, 1976"

last song was Gino (The manager)

was that it? it's a cool song

  • yeah. that's it. thanks.

  • Is this Robert Fripp on guitar stepping in for Todd Sharp?

  • The first few notes do sound like Frippertronics or outtakes from WarBabies, but after that it gets more conventional.

  • The opening bit is the intro for Is It a Star? from War Babies. Probably sounds more like Todd Rundgren. :)

  • You are absolutely right.

  • Actually, it is the intro for Can't Stop the Music. I screwed up. lol

  • yeah Todd Sharp on guitar. He must have had a falling out with them because he was too good to just disappear they way hey did. I know he played with Rod Stewart later too.

  • No falling out there. As Daryl and John became more successful in the late 70's their budget to spend increased as well. John saw Elton John in concert and became intrigued with his band. After Elton's tour they replaced their band with Caleb Quaye on guitar, Roger Pope on drums and Kenny Paserelli on bass...all from Elton's band. In my opinion Todd Sharp was part of their best band. Daryl acknowledges how good they were back then in the liner notes on their new box set

  • I've been waiting for this to hit youtube since winter of 07! Thank you sooooo much!!

  • I have this taped. What a GREAT performace, great songs, etc. I consider this 100 times better than the studio versions from Abandoned Lunchonette. Great singer songwriters they are, but I've always loved loved loved this show's performance of them.

  • Actually, this song is from the "Daryl Hall John Oates" album (aka Silver Album). But I agree with everything else you said. ^_^

  • buy the cd cheap cheap on amazon

  • what album this on?? this is a damn classic!! love that 70's music

  • they're debut.

It's called daryll hall and john oates.

I know it wasn't they're first effort, but it may as well have been, because they weren't that successful before then.

I'm not remembering this, i'm far too young, i was just on wikipedia a few months ago.

  • Yeah, they had three albums for Atlantic before this first one for RCA. Though "She's Gone" was on the second of those, Abandoned Luncheonette, it wasn't top ten until Atlantic rereleased it, following the top ten success of "Sara Smile", also from the Daryl hall John Oates album. ^_^

  • Oh, wasn't one of those produced by todd rundgren?

Anyway, thanks for that, that's useful to know, i'll look for them. I have only just noticed that, in my reply to kingne1, I used "they're" instead of "their".

    I am a complete moron.

  • Yes, Todd Rundgren produced War Babies (1974). After the folksie Whole Oats (1972), and acoustic R&B Abandoned Luncheonette (1973), War Babies came out sounding like, well, Todd Rundgren at the height of his self-admitted mid-1970s psychodelic drug era (i.e. A Wizard, A True Star). ^_^ It scared off most of their audience, and got them dropped by Atlantic. Oh well, you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs... ^_^

  • That's not to say War Babies wasn't a great album. The tunes were good, as always, but the thing I liked best about it was the fact that a lot of the lyrics were narrative, to an extent that simply does not exist on any of their other albums. It was simply a case of putting out a record that was so much of a departure from the previous to that really threw the listener for a loop. ^_^

  • It's a shame when people turn off a band just because they do different from usual.

I'll have to hear those albums, they sound really good from what you're saying.

    Cool, thanks!

  • I really like 70's Scenario and I'm Watching You (A Mutant Romance). I love how in the liner notes for the album Daryl Hall talks about how 24 hour surveillance cameras were installed in Times Square for the first time.

  • Totally agree there are some fantastic tracks on War Babies that show Daryl's vocal versatility. It is a shame they never dip into that pool for live show material.

  • I could not agree more with you about the War Babies album. Todd never sold out to anyone ever. He put his stamp on that project and you can tell. In the long run, it propably inspired H/O. Todd did them a favor by granting them the privilege of him producing, engineering and playing on their album. Some of the music sounds as though Todd actually wrote it.

  • The Tavares Brothers had a hit with She's Gone before H&O did.

  • Great post!!! Thanks from an "old man" who first saw them in the spring of 1975...

  • Awesome! Been lookin for this since I caught this on vh1 classic a few years ago.

  • wow!

  • @perryk007 Wow I found this album in my fathers lp's in like 76, I'm an old hippy cant even believe I'm doing this comment lol Finding it hard to believe punching up Hall/Oates I have to know the song. Feeling like they jumped the Shark, though I cant blame them. Go where da money are. I'm a local musician in Delaware. I'm a local rock star cant see them Looking for my album that put me on the map. Die Hard me-Nothing at all.

  • Quien haya puesto esto..... te amo!

  • This is my favourite song at the moment. I really don't understand how they remained so fresh all the time. Also, all of the biggest names in the '70s sound dated to me, but not Hall and Oates.

  • True true, pal. Shining brilliance.

  • Hells yeah. They can't be matched for talent by any other pop artist/s.

  • This stuff gives me chills. I first saw H & O in 1973 at the Main Point in Bryn Mawr, PA. And a whole lot of times between that and 1980. I'm a musician and quite critical of performances but these guys just continue to blow me away.

  • This is quite rare track !

    Thanks. Fresh Daryl and John.

  • daryl hall has always kind of reminded me of dennis leary, both of whom i love. daryl voice is the voice of my 70's. love love love it.
