@nobulshevick no actually the drill for a tree landing is you don't lower your gear (this will protect your lower body) then you grab your main lift webs in a criss cross fasion (left hand grabs right riser, right hand grabs left riser) then you push your face into the space created by your crossed arms. landing in the trees is always bad but this drill will offer the most protection

@PapaBare100 Was never taught that technique in U.S. Army Airborne/ jump school. Plus, I feel that having my nearly 90 lb. rucksack dangling from my body twelve feet down from me as I land in a tree would definitely not feel good as it snaps to a sudden halt at the end of the line ten feet above the ground. That might break more of some poor bastard's bones than the tree will. We were taught to get rid of all gear in ANY emergency like that one.

The drill if you're heading for the trees. you hang onto your rucksack You don't lower it. keep it on the "D" rings this is going to stop the trees from spearing you through the lower body. I would much rather have my 90lb rucksack punching through the tree branches than say...ohhh I don't know, my nut sack!! That'a the way they train us in Canada. I've been a qualified jumper since 1979. I have American, Brit, and german jump wings too.

@PapaBare100 No misunderstanding, I think we just trained differently. Can't say that I have Canadian or German jump wings, but I do have the Brits. But my point remains. Extra weight means hitting harder and possibly getting hung up by my gear. Rather nicely bounce right through than that, still a personal preference than a training issue. Also effects getting down on your own, not something I'd want to wait for someone else on a combat jump in a hot DZ. Have to call that one in the air though.

Like you said, we were probably just trained differently, but I just thought Id chime in with a pretty recent experience. Like Papabare100 said, the idea is that the ruck will keep you from getting speared and clear a path through the branches.

@ArmyAvengencePball Well, since you just went through and they trained you not to jettison gear, (and I have a tendency to forget after going through Jump school in 94) I'd say we weren't trained differently. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd still leave the choice to myself IF I can see what I'm going to land in/on during a daylight jump. A judgment call I guess. Of course, night jumps you're generally screwed as you should have already dropped your ruck right quick to begin with.

Seen this in Airborne School. (Correct me if im wrong) the vehicle at 1:15 could only reach speeds up too 45 mph, but ended up reaching a speed of nearly 85 mph. Let's be honest, no other country did these test runs like the USA, so as far as the tax money goes. Look up how well other countries are doing. I'm sure we are still spending less money on accidents, like they are.

Since the 70's (or earlier) the Soviets dropped their equipment with rockets on the underside of the platforms that ignited about 20 feet from impact, and they all landed very softly. Why haven't we adopted this? Too expensive : ) ?? And to think, we drop the equipment after we drop the personnel.
