At 4:18 when they stop playing then it's when Neal is coming on and ending the first part with one heavy riffing. And when they start jamming the second part he's the one that kicks off with awesome soloing. One can here differences on their sound though Neal has a slightly brighter tone with some more distortion then Carlos, and of course Neals vibrato is much more of a heavy-blues-rock stylish way. Listening to Santana III one realizes that Neal was a prodigy becoming an amazing guitarist!
On the field before the Atlanta Braves-Philadelphia Phillies game yesterday.
Given a civil rights award, Santana indicated that unemployed Black, Hispanic & Whites who want jobs held by illegals are as racist as those who turned on civil rights protesters in the 1960s. Santana is like most bigots who speak,, from the emotional hatred stuck in their guts. not from knowledge or facts ! Look at Americans Santana calls racist for wanting laws to keep employers from hiring illegals
@onstageagain You know I had the same problem with Ted Nugent.Loved his music from the 70's,but didn't care for his political views now.I guess you have to forgive them for getting old,and out of touch with what's happening now.
@MrMeddled I'm wondering if that isn't Schon playing that run. Looks like he's on the wah pedal; his hand seem to be in the correct position for those notes.Watch that section again and tell me what you think.
I think that a lot of these negative critcisms of Carlos's guitar playing are way out of line. I've seen him live about 60 times; I have to totally disagree with @davebassify. Did you guys who don't like his playing just watch this video? I saw him tear it up-- incredibly diverse, great guitar playing-- in the 80s many times. Did you ever hear the Moonflower album? How about Lotus? Or the one when he played with John McLaughlin? Amazing playing!
Is that possibly Jim Morrison 3:00 into clip standing behind Shrieve [drums]
sure does look like him! Another video of Montreux "Taboo" someone else pointed that same look alike out. anyone think this looks like jim? He was is France and still alive as this was May 1971. If anyone can clean this up on zoom, please post.
P.S> Look who is standung behind the drummer with the big woolly beard. Herbie Herbert. The manager that took Neal and Greg from that band and made them great!
@Daveybassify interesting analogy, While I agree Carlos was average in the world of guitar, he opened the door for latin fusion rock per se. Santana IMO was Greg and Neal. Yea H.Herbert facilitated Rolie and Schon career[s] AKA
Journey. Later with Perry, the record company direction for the band [marketing] was a pop teeny bop sound...radio music.
What is your take on the current Gregg Rolie Band?
@Daveybassify Gregg Rolie Band tours the local circuit, recently heard a couple of his interviews, he will continue to tour/write/promote/book independently of any record company. Basically Gregg stated, that he preferred not to pursue that direction again. Check out the Gregg Rolie Band, "Roots" some excellent tunes for sure. What is HD? Assuming Carlos was a part of that?
In the world of immensly terrible and overrated guitar players, Carlos tops the list. I appreciate that he brought the latin-rock thing front and center, and its a great accomlishment STYLISTICALLY, but he just plain sucks. sloppy, repetitive and just ultra boring.
Sorry guys, but what has he evolved into (same riffs 40 years later) and what Neal Schon has accomplished...its pathetic.listen to the difference when neal rips that lick around 4:30. HUGE difference. Even the band goes WOW
OK, I will give that album a listen. I saw them in 1968 even before Bill Graham signed them and they were so excellent. I saw them in 1989 and I was not happy with the vocals. One thing I like about this video is all the HAIR!! I cannot get used to the buzzcuts that are standard fare today. I know I am getting old, but it still reminds me of army recruits in the Vietnam War era. Will I ever get used to it before the trend goes back to longer hair?
Holy crap. I think the Swiss had Hi Def cameras in 1971. That film is clearer than anything Japan or the US produced for another 30 years. I can actually read the settings on Carlos' amps. Unfucking real technology. Oh yeah awesome playing too, as usual.
GET THE HELL UP AND DANCE!!!!!!!! How can those people in the audience just sit there?!!!!?!? Ok there's one guy bobbing his head. Every body else is dead.
@Qwazier3 Shut the f*ck-up and quit ordering people around you control freak! If people want to dance they'll dance. If they feel like just sitting there grooving to the vibes that their prerogative!
There have been many great line ups. This is arguably one of the best but I like the Moon Flower line up too. I think Coster brought out Carlos's best playing.
I agree with Wadidiz on Chambers-Rekow-Perrazo, they're the best possibly ever. Armando was instrumental in keeping the sauce sizzling during the years before Supernatural and had a great influence on Raul Rekow. Thanks Wadidiz, I appreciate the feedback. I truly love this band!!
Where's Chepito?? That's the only player missing from this best group Carlos ever put on stage. The percussion section of Shrive-Areas-Carabello was world class bar none. VIVA SANTANA PA SIEMPRE !!!
Chepito was struck by a brain aneurism and couldn't join the tour. Carabello really didn't like heading out without him. This is great, but imagine how wonderful it would have been with Chepito! Michael Shrieve is my favorite drummer but my favorite conguero ever is Armando Peraza. The current Dennis Chambers-Raul Rekow-Karl Perrazo line up is the best percussion section ever or perhaps a close 2nd to Shrieve-Areas-Peraza of the Lotus era. Raul & Karl have really stepped up over the years.
Lock on now, your description is a bit off because chepito is not playing the timbales on this performance it looks like Pete or Coke Escobedo, where was chepito? I don't know maybe Santana can tell us!
This is not the Woodstock lineup. Schon was still playing in some Bay Area high school band in the summer of 69. But is their best lineup for sure. They always seem to have some crooner for a singer after this who was too poppy for my tastes.
@soltisimba Have you ever listened to the Borboletta album? I thought Leon Patillo's voice really worked well with the band; and it would be a stretch to categorize him as any sort of "crooner". Tom Coster had replaced Greg Rollie by then, but is playing lots of B-3 and Rhodes. Carlos' playing is absolutely peaking. Every solo is focused and soulful, and - in my opinion, at least - his tone never sounded better, and was in just the perfect place in the mix. Album is an underappreciated gem.
This was by far the best line up Santana had...to bad they couldn't reunite to bring back the real fire. No offense to the new band but this was THEE band.
This is great, what a great posting; thank you. This is vintage, check out how Carlos is trying to get his sustain from his amp bye playing right into the speakers. And Neal is on fire here. Incredible vid.
Cool! I have DVD's of Santana at Montreux, but most of them are from the late 1980's through now. I didn't know that Santana played at Montreaux that early. I mean, his band was still just starting to become popular. But, it is still awesome! I only have one question: Is that jam they did after Neil Schon's solo an extension of the song "Jingo," or is it it's own song? It was cool!
It's called Gumbo. But I think theres only a live version of it. I'm pretty sure it's on the Santana III remastered. The song is completely different by the way :)
Obviously, from this bunch of chicanos and white boys learning "how to do it, the best way", Miles and Jimi is missing badly...or Bernie Worrell and Bootsie Collins...Oh God, these sounds are pure living pulses...
Oh My! Remins me of my first concert at the San Diego Sports Arena in 1971, seeing Carlos and crew, and many people o'ding all around the concert floor. I was 13 yrs. old my first Santana concert!
is there a dvd of this. I know that viva santana dvd had some late 60s stuff , but has some shitty ass commentary that blocks all of the concert sound off.
Very cool, thanks for posting. This was in June 1971 and in December of that year this casino would burn down during a Frank Zappa concert and the incident would become immortalized in Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water".

Chepito wasnt acually playing with the band around this time. He suffered from a brain aneurysm around this time. Coke stepped in while he recovered.
