this story is fiction - Fort McHenry opened a new visitors center March 2011 - go sometime and get the facts - try telling this fiction and get laughed out of the state
What we never think about is the English created the two most powerful countries this plant has ever seen (British Empire, "American Empire"). But we are all Saxon from Germanic tribes.
It saddens me to see the negative comments on here about the trials and struggles and battles that our founding Fathers went through to gain our freedoms. You are as ignorant as stupid and do not belong here.
This and all other battles were not the single reason that we gained our freedoms, but was influential, and gained a demoralizing factor over the British. I am proud of our founding Fathers and wish the Americans today were half as courageous as the folks then.
This video is largly untrue. Ft. McHenry was an important military base. The British bobardment was ineffective. The Americans stayed in underground quarters; only four were killed. The Brittish quit more through exaustion than anything else. F.S.Key wrote a poem, not the song, which was an old British drinking song that was adapted later. Why do some people feel the need to create myts about our real history? It just cheapens the very real heroism of those who have defended our nation.
Why do people find it necessary to embellish and falsify stories that are heroic and truthful in their own right?
This version is so wrought with errors, it shouldn't be allowed on You Tube.
We were an independent nation - not colonies - during the War of 1812. It was Fort McHenry - not Fort Henry. Key's mission was to negotiate the release of a planter friend, not all the prisoners. He wasn't allowed to stay on the ship but was sent to another during the bombardment. LEAVE HISTORY ALONE!
Armistead, commander of Fort McHenry, commissioned "a flag so large that the British would have no difficulty seeing it from a distance." Sept. 13, 1814. 5,000 British soldiers and a fleet of 19 warships attacked Baltimore. The British were unable to penetrate the harbor after 25 hours of constant shelling. When the attack ended, the battered flag still flew above the ramparts of Fort McHenry. Key, held on a British ship on the Patasco river, composed a poem that became the Star Spangled Banner.
There's some license taken with this story. Not a lot, but "hundreds" of ships, and "the men in chains" isn't documented by history. F Scott Key was there specifically for the release of the town physician, who had been accused of something or other and had been taken prisoner by the British. Key was obliged to remain onboard, because the Brits were afraid he would betray the plans for attack on Ft McHenry...
Does anyone know if this is really a true story? We are looking to perform this with the orchestra but need to verify the copyright and if anyone would need to be paid for its use. Thanks, Dave
From a Brit 2 all you Americans, be proud of your heritage, for you should be, thank god you won your independence, the mighty USA have been our freind, allie and on ocassion saviour ever since, GOD BLESS AMERICA!
@TheCharlie359 Thanks for your comments, Americans feel great love and affiliation with Great Britain also. So many ties, relations and blood between our two wonderful nations! Thanks for your love of both countries!!
I think God made America to help Britain and protect her and be her friend, All things work for good.

the moderator has made some mistakes - in 1814 America was no longer a colony and the fort was and is Fort McHenry
