monoliths and dimensions was pretty dope, i like the fact that it took them a long time to record everything and there's only 4 tracks. excessive quality over quantity
@skateNappreciate yeah but those 4 tracks equals to around 50 minutes of music if not more... Monoliths and Dimensions is an amazing album, both as a metal record and an avant garde record.
It looks like a very decent list. I don't even know half of the albums you pointed but the other half I know are great LPs. I'm glad you kicked the over-hyped "xx" (which was mentionned almost everywhere whereas it's just a darkly cute record) out of your list. Of course Animal Collective has to be on Top 3 whatever choices are made. I'd make it #2 of my list, #3 being the almost perfect, compelling "Veckatimest", and my personnal peak: the raw, harsh, beautiful "Embryonic"" by The Flaming Lips.
@FemmeUrbane homie all of these bands i have never heard of........ and its not that great either this dude is jizzing himself over weird hipster experimental bands and he said vampire weekend is not that great, thats where i draw the line
I respect you man! You're real, down to earth, and partial enough to really listen to with consideration.
I thought I was the only one who felt that way about Mono. I grew up on EITS, they're very dear to me. I only been listening to Mono since 2009. I listen to everything chronologically of course. EITS All of a Sudden really effected me; they brought out the big guns. But man, what Mono does can only be explained as supreme divinity. Hymn and Palmless Prayer blow me away!
Name-dropping the most obscure bands doesn't make you hip or cool. I've watched your reviews and you know absolutely nothing about music and I hate your fucking face and voice.
fever ray is good but in my opinion not awesome. in songs like '' when i grow up'' her voice is just too annoying for me. loved '' triangle walks'' and '' keep the streets empty''
Been looking for reviews for this kind of music for a while. Brilliant, Fever ray definatly my album of 09 as well. By the way, have you heard of sleeps in oysters? they're a pretty obscure band, but they make great experimental folktronica which sounds like nothing else.
Hey man, I came across your channel when I was checking out MNDR or something like that and I got to thank you for getting me the names of so many new bands to try out. Only been into some electro-pop since 2005 when I heard The Knife and just dove in. Grew up listening to all types of metal and alternative but am really enjoying the electronic phase I'm in now. Some of my favorite stuff is post-punk as well. I don't always agree but checking out your pics and sources keeps it interesting!
DO NOT COMPARE WITH RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, FUCKING HATE THEM.
This for me is the greatest concept album of 2009, even the way the songs were numbered is great, it has two songs you can fucking sync and it sounds good two!!! WHO THE FUCK DOES THAT? it kinda hurts, really.. It's dreamy, ethereal, lot of reverb vocals, and interesting builds..
@Pancho449 That is a great album but his solo style is different from the style of the Chili Peppers as a group. To "FUCKING HATE" a band is quite petty especially one as talently as them
@rhcprh Okay, I will admit that it sounds fairly childish, I do not mean to say they are bad, they know how to make a decent album, let me rephrase that and say that I don't like them and how they have evolved musically, and I also dislike the way that they shadow John Frusciantes work, not on purpose, but still do.
@Pancho449 As my name implies i am a fan but still to say someone is more popular and therefore overshadows his work is not something that should bother you. Even if the band disbanded JF solo work wouldn't be radio hits. Popularity is not a measure of talent but talented artists can be popular. It is hard to deny Chad Smith as a drumming genius or Flea as one of the greatest bassists. They just don't appeal to you and that's fine. JF loves them and that should be enough for you
@rhcprh Well, I don't mean to say that the peppers have a negative effect on Johns music, I just wish he had a little more exposure so his music could be heard and appreciated as much as it should be, but wether that would be good or bad I do not know, John has made it clear that he wouldn't like it if the number of fans of his work got bigger, but that's just a thing I differ with him about. I'm not fond of Chad and Anthony, you know, skillwise, but you just CANNOT hate Flea, he's the best.
FEVER RAY, indeed! The Metal-head from within would also have to include Mastodon's "Crack the Skye" and Poison the Well's "The Tropic Rot" on my list for 2009. I also listened to Broadcast & The Focus Group Investigate Witch Cults of the Radio Age a lot for some reason.... and I can't forget The Flaming Lip's "Embryonic". Please review Solex's 2010 album with Jon Spencer and Cristina Martinez, "Amsterdam Throwdown, King Street Showdown". Thanks!
A pretty glaring omission here is Fuck Buttons - Tarot Sport. As well as Islands - Vapours ( though I realize that one is a preference thing). Fever Ray is a very good choice for first, though, The Knife/Fever Ray are so accessible, yet weirdly they sound like no one else. Also, Wild Beasts released an album in '09, Two dancers, that didn't get nearly enough shine stateside. You should check it out, which I guess you didn't, since it din't make a top 15 which A Hawk and A hacksaw made.
ALSO.....In 2009 I really was not collecting or listening to anything new...mostly listening to my old records, but there were some really good bands that stood out for me in the last year, such as Black Math Horseman, rediscovered MUSE, Mastodon ripped me apart, Shrinebuilder, Farflung, Darkthrone, Dead Man, Sleepy Eyes of Death...haven´t really been into the electronic scene much..Stateless is good...The Qemists- Hurt Less single rocks! But what I´m diggin now is Depressive Black Metal!
as a semi-music geek myself...I have to say....hmmmm, very poppy, very indie....but pretty good in all....never knew about Mono, so thanks on that one, with ya 100% on the SUNN issue...love your concert review on that, after the show it felt as if my mouth was speaking from within my skull and not from my face...know what I mean?.....Lastly, thank you immensely for turning me on to Fever Ray...WOW! Serious question: Do you smoke a lot of pot? Because I could see get blown and listening to most of this stuff, but completely sober a lot of this is boring as hell.
Love your enthusiasm and your taste in tunes is top-notch! But Grizzly Bear's Veckatimest and Dirty Projectors' Bitte Orca didn't make your list at all! They're my one and two respectively.
Love the reviiews, your one of the only people I go to. I was a little let down that Merriweather Post wasnt your favorite but you put it in the top 3 so Im happy.
The Residents - The Ughs!, Omar Souleyman - Dabke 2020, Thee Oh Sees - Help, Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca, Doom - Born Like This, The Bad Plus with Wendy Lewis - For All I Care, Sunn O))) - Monoliths and Dimensions, Aethenor - Faking Gold and Murder (Not In Order, Sure I Forgot A Bunch).
1. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest 2. Antlers - Hospice 3. Wild Beasts - Two Dancers 4. Animal Collective - Merryweather 5. The xx - XX 6. Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix 7. The Horros - Primary Colours 8. Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca 9. Girls - Album 10. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz 11. The Pains of being pure at heart - The pains of being pure at heart 12. Fever Ray - Fever Ray 13. Wilco - Wilco 14. Flaming Lips - Embryonic 15. Sonic Youth - The eternal
I checked out some of the stuff you liked, but I thought it was a lot of over produced bullshit & very pretencious. What about Them Crooked Vultures, Cage The Elephant?
@gardnerdan17 the only reason you think its over produced and pretentious is because the crap you listen to has no thought put into it at all. And Cage the Elephant? Come on...
Just got the Zombi album because 1) Never heard of them 2) Awesome cover art. Really digging this album a lotttttt and this is normally a genre im iffy on.
I bet you're familiar with pitchfork (music review site), but I was wondering if you're one of their actual reviewers? cause your style of reviewing reminds me of pitchfork :)
Hey, I just started watching your reviews and they are awesome! Keep it up man! 1. Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix 2. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion 3. Isis - Wavering Radiant 4. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest 5. Passion Pit - Manners 6. Fever Ray - Fever Ray 7. Tyondai Braxton - Central Market 8. Black Moth Super Rainbow - Eating Us 9. Manchester Orchestra - Mean Everything to Nothing 10. Mastodon - Crack the Skye Honorable mention: Venetian Snares - Filth
I agree with Sunn O)))'s Monoliths & Dimensions being on there. I haven't heard any of the other albums because I'm more into metal than anything else.
i was surprised that veckatimest didn't make your list. that album is layered as hell in all the right places, and several of the songs are just mindblowing. I'm also befuddled by how little recognition neko case's middle cyclone received on critics' end-of-the-year lists. I thought it was fantastic, though slightly unfocused and overlong

MPP was a bit overrated for me. FF: tonight was pretty damn good, also Veckatimest and I know I'm a minority but I really enjoyed FS's Entertainment.

You say Explosions and Mono are the best in Post-Rock, but what about F#A#oo by Godspeed You! Black Emperor?

@sorrycaps Nothing can beat F Sharp A Sharp Infinity. That album is so intense. The movements and the buildups are indescribable.

@sorrycaps Talk Talk with laughing stock is one of the best. Set Fire To Flames with Sings Reign Rebuilder is also great :)

I checked out some of the stuff you liked, but I thought it was a lot of over produced bullshit & very pretencious. What about Them Crooked Vultures, Cage The Elephant?
gardnerdan17 1 year ago
@gardnerdan17 the only reason you think its over produced and pretentious is because the crap you listen to has no thought put into it at all. And Cage the Elephant? Come on...

I bet you're familiar with pitchfork (music review site), but I was wondering if you're one of their actual reviewers? cause your style of reviewing reminds me of pitchfork :)
