It is important to note that non-attachment, although it involves itself, never imposes itself. Moreover, non-attachment does not seek to end suffering (nor does it seek to perpetuate it). The moment you try to control your environment, you leave non-attachment and enter the dualistic energy that we are all so familiar with. Ignorance is what perpetuates suffering. Remove suffering, leave ignorance, you will get more suffering.
I honestly didnt get it...and mr. hawkins (with all due respect), has a bit of an 'INTENSE" aura and personality...maybe that's why i didnt get it...think it would have been better delivered by someone with a more quiet softer nature. again, no disrespect, only my opinion, as I, too, am trying to open the mental horizons!
I witnessed that INTENSITY first hand when I asked a him a question at one of his lectures. I instantly had a "WHOA! WOW!" feeling in his presence, just merely sitting across from him. But, I still understood his answer to my question perfectly. So, if you prefer someone of a different nature to explain something to you, then of course you might not understand his message. The mistake is going in with expectations and presuming what someone's personality/delivery should be like.
His message is to advocate people to fully participate in life and to enjoy it but not to be "attached" to the results or pleasures (i.e., non attachment). Simply put, look out for your happiness AND for the happiness of others. "Detachment" does not include the happiness of others. It's an indifferent and cold way of being. It's a way of participating in life without love and warmth (e.g., dismissing a simple certificate as "ego" and not accepting it with thanks and gratitude).
You seem to be the only who characterizes them as "ego-massaging." Perhaps your own ego is merely jealous and it's secretly trying to point out flaws in others just to make itself feel superior. Nah, I'm sure your God-like ego would never do that! I'm sure yours is wise enough to figure out that -- like any actor, beauty contestant, or sport figure -- it's also quite ordinary for awards to be accepted with gratitude and thankfulness (usually to God). So no need to jump to conclusions.
You clearly missed the message. Enlightenment does not mean "detachment" (e.g., freaking out because you've done well at your profession by helping a lot of people and someone was grateful enough to give you a certificate). "Non attachment" allows for full participation in life. Just because a certificate would massage your ego does not mean that it would do the same to someone like Hawkins. Being freaked out by certificates would demonstrate ego resistance and insecurity.

Everyone who is awakened is using different words to say the same thing. The truth is in the sound of a voice more so than the words used.
Check OSHO on you tube if you want a good laugh at the human condition as seen from the 4th state of consciousness.
To think I used to be like that, and sadly so many still are.
The Ego, the devil within.
