The 3DO was a commercial failure, most certainly, but no way in hell is it a critical one, not in the way the Pippin or Jaguar were.
And the big issue with the 3DO price was that the 3DO company got royalties for software and hardware, but the hardware MAKERS didn't, so they weren't willing to take the losses that Sony took for the PlayStation.
I must ask though, were there ever any non-standard controllers? I can't imagine only playing Super SF2 Turbo with only three buttons...
i own a FZ-10 *my dad does at least* i dont know how the system failed its got a great game base and from my play time most games that we own dont have any bugs or problems..
I sold my PS1 to get the 3DO, I was a mega street fighter 2 fan back in the day and when the 3DO version came out it was the closest thing we had to playing the coin op and this 3DO version was a version all to it's own it was a nice looking game and would you believe it, it had better music than the coinop, FZ-1 Panasonic was the best 3DO and I still have the exact mode that I bought way back in 1995, it's a fab machine and the only console to have a headphone socket on the controller...coool
I bought the FZ-1 when they dropped the price to $399 in 1994.I also have the FZ-10 which I bought a few years ago off Ebay.I still play this system,it did have quite a few really good games.
I picked up a FZ1 at Best Buy as an open box item for $50. It had some games crammed into the box as well. Everything worked fine. Best find I've had and it was at a retail store and a great price to boot.
FZ-1 FTW! Wing Commander 3. Return Fire, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Samurai Shodown, Road Rash, The expansion was going to be for VCDs and MPEG video.
I wonder how it would've turned out if the price was lower ($200 to $350) and if it was not realesed around when the genesis and super nintendo were the shit.
The M2 was converted into some Konami arcade machines, and the M2 boards are also found in coffee vendors and receipt printing machines, so technically there are M2s out there.
@gamester81. Nice review. I'll be checking more of your video's. But why do you speak at warp speed? Slow down a bit, makes it easier for the listener.
Oh, and by the way, IGN voted this as the 22nd greatest console of all time, so it really was one of the greats. The only reason a lot of people think it was a bad system was the two sh*tty Zelda games on it. Sucks that they botched the launch as well.
Any idea what one of these things costs on eBay? If I can find one, it looks fun to have.
@IceFactor52 Oh, yeah, that's right. My bad. :) *facepalm*
Still, not many of these things exist (at least compared to the Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation), so it would be cool to own one just for the sheer novelty of it.
I paid 800 for mine in Canada when it first came out (with one game), Crash and Burn was an awesome game, There was some kind of virtual reality game for it that was great but i cant remeber the name
I just recently picked up a Goldstar 3DO for $5, bought a brand new in the box FZ-JP1X controller for $9.99 and I am loving it! $700 worth of fun for $15. The 3DO really does have quite a few good games. If you find a system for cheap I highly recommend getting one. Also the 3DO has no copy protection so you it will play all of you backup games with no problem!
"Now the power adaptor you could take off, and it was almost like the PlayStation one..."
Its the exact same. Also, not that your videos are terrible, but you need to do them in better light, use a tripod so you can use both of your hands, and also talk a little quicker so your videos aren't quite so boring.
One nice thing about the 3DO is that the games don't have any copy protection. So if can find the roms online (pretty easy) you can just burn them to a CD.
I loved Twisted, I really wish they would have ported the game onto a newer system, but I heard it wasn't well received. If I get the system, that's the only game I plan to get
700 dollars of that time is like 1670 dollars of our time.thats why 3do failed so fast.none was buying it cause it was very expensive! when ppl bought it its production had been stoped and it was beeing selled at cost prise(more or less(250 dollars of 1994-95 rate)
@TheEscapedBalloon There was a product planning reason for that. "3DO" was going to be a standard for multimedia entertainment, much like "VHS" is a standard.
It took several tries and many unsuccessful products for companies to learn that "edutainment" does not sell hardware, but games do.
I got mine in '93 for $700.00 with Dragon's lair, Road Rash, and need for speed. One of my favorite systems. I still have it, and it works great. Still waiting for the M2...
Love yer vids, jus now discovering them, and Im getting all nostalgic lol... I ended up using it mostly as a music player for the decent visuals. I was into the floyd and other 60s-70s bands and recreational medicinal herbs. I ended up giving it to a soon-to-be-after ex. That mortal kombat clone that took brutality over the top was so hard to play thanks to the controllers, as I previously mentioned ;(
Heh... made me feel dumb. I bought one of these new retail when they came out. I had the 1st Panasonic version. The bundled game was that 3rd person 3D spaceship flight game. I loved Road Rash, and actually finished Star Control II on this system. From a hardware perspective, they didnt even try to make a game controller. What they really did was make a cheap wired "remote" control shaped like a controller, and that's what really stood out as major suckage the moment u fired it up the 1st time.
Funny story - I used to play the Road Rash demo that was on some demo CD that I had. It was set on a timer that would just reset to the main screen after a certain amount of time, so I must have played the same 2 minute stretch of the game 50 times anticipating getting the game for Christmas. I snuck and opened the gift early, replacing the CD with another and rewrapping it, just to find that the full version of the game reset at the same point. I was devastated.
I think the port on the back of the Panasonic was to be a add on device so the Panasonic would play CDi and VCD movies. I heard CDi and VCD are the same thing.

I still have this system. I have the FZ-1 model with 2 controllers. GEX is the shit on this console. Can't forget about Dirk The Brave and his adventures so deadly that you will die 20 times in the first 2 levels. This system was awesome but so expensive. Thank god mine was free.
Picked my FZ-1 up for just £20 around 15 years ago. Its a great system, just lifting it you know its solid build quality as its easily one of the heaviest consoles of its day.
My favourate game on that system has to be Wing Commander 3 - Heart of the Tiger. Though I've only two dozen original games for it. So glad it doesn't have copy protection as it means I can find the games online and just burn the ISOs.
I remember when these first game out... I was 12, and I really really really wanted one! They cost so much.. I wanted to play The Need For Speed.. it was one of the best driving games at the time. 17 years later... I suppose I can afford one now. I remember the graphics were awesome, the sound was awesome, and the design of the console looked awesome. It's so strange that I could just buy one so cheap on ebay now! Thanks a lot for this video, it was cool :) I remember the controller so well.

My uncle had this system it was a great system just didn't have the game to live long. Favorite game was Slam and Jam such a fun WE SLAMMING AND JAMMING!
@robhova well i have try out the 3DO with GOLD STAR i tried getting the FZ-1 but i cant find a good cheap one so i got the goldstar which it cost me $50 and got 2 games with it (gex-wolfenstein 3d) and trying to get more good games like dragons lair and wing commander
I love the 3do, i know there are some bad games for it, but there are bad games for evey system that exists. There are a lot of really good games, including twisted, which is really unique.
I thought the FZ10 version looked better but the one I own is the Panisonic verision but rare is the FZ10 Verision. But I never cared for the looks of the Goldstar verision.
It's different than the PS1, but came out around the same time, just a little bit before. I feel that the graphics are better and run smoother than the PS1, but the PS1 had better games.
@1994lebaron - If you're familiar with the SEGA CD, the 3DO was like it. Many FMV games like Sega CD, and plus it had 3D capabilities. It was like a REALLY souped up and more powerful Sega CD system, meaning far superior video quality. I don't think it had a faster disc-read speed though.
But Playstation 1 outperformed 3DO quite comfortably.
@1994lebaron you cannot become a videogame expert without knowing the 3DO! it is like the PSOne, it's an earlier 32-bit releasing a year earlier along with the Atari Jaguar
Your videos never fail to amaze me. Its always cool to know that there's people out there that can get into talking about consoles and gaming as much as I like to. A+ dude, your honestly one of the biggest reasons I started uploading vids. I actually own the Goldstar and the FZ-10 but I need to purchase the accessories.
my dad bought me a neogeo aes back in 1989 that system cost me $600.00 .. imagine has crazy was that of corse my dad had a arcade rental service ...i still have it with me ...
Thanks for posting the vid, I feel almost special as I requested it a few days ago :-) Need to give some kudos to Space Hulk though, 3do version was awesome sauce.
Ha ha. I love the part were you were talking about playing with a friend and they would unplug your controller. "It was bullshit." Awsome. Laughed my ass off because its so true.

Favorite game was Slam and Jam such a fun WE SLAMMING AND JAMMING!
robhova 1 year ago
@robhova Yeah Slam Jam is a great game. Wasn't that kinda a 3Dish style of play? Kinda like NCAA Basketball for the SNES?
Gamester81 1 year ago
@robhova well i have try out the 3DO with GOLD STAR i tried getting the FZ-1 but i cant find a good cheap one so i got the goldstar which it cost me $50 and got 2 games with it (gex-wolfenstein 3d) and trying to get more good games like dragons lair and wing commander
killkenny5000 11 months ago
@robhova wolfenstein 3d on 3DO best port ever

I had a 3do. I loved it and brought it to work, brought it to friends' places and we played the hell out of it :)
berner 1 year ago
i heard they revamped the 3do to the fz-10 to cut back on piracy, as you can just burn your games and play them on the fz-1 without any modding.
Captain Quazar, another great 3do game.

i have model colled fz-10, in my opinion fz-10 have more like console style look, and fz-1 like- pc
PanterAmetal100 1 year ago
it'd be roughly $1025 today adjusted for inflation

i have the fz10 , i have since 1995/96 , i love this system!!!
duvisa 2 years ago
there is no region/copy protection on the 3do so you can just download and burn games and they will play.

Atari Jaguar and Jaguar cd was the worst system in the 90's or maybe worst of all time. It's too bad I likes Atari.
boxerjoey38 2 years ago
The 3DO came out in 1993 and it cost $ 699 american and $799 canadian. It had some good games. But it was the cost of the system that killed it.
boxerjoey38 2 years ago
I remember when walmart sold this model. I think part of 3DO was they never had a demo system to play at walmart to market the system.

I love the 3do, i know there are some bad games for it, but there are bad games for evey system that exists. There are a lot of really good games, including twisted, which is really unique.
squirm13 2 years ago
a friend of mine had this exact model back in 1996. it was a real cool system, if it just leveled out a better retail price...

I remember this system being sold at Radio Shack I think in the early 90's.

I thought the FZ10 version looked better but the one I own is the Panisonic verision but rare is the FZ10 Verision. But I never cared for the looks of the Goldstar verision.

ive never heard of a 3do. is it kinda like a ps1??
1994lebaron 2 years ago
It's different than the PS1, but came out around the same time, just a little bit before. I feel that the graphics are better and run smoother than the PS1, but the PS1 had better games.
Gamester81 2 years ago
... and the ps1 was infinitely more sucessful

cool :D
1994lebaron 2 years ago
@Gamester81 As Far as 3D goes the 3D0 is very poor. The Ps1 is better.
ojideagu 1 year ago
@1994lebaron - If you're familiar with the SEGA CD, the 3DO was like it. Many FMV games like Sega CD, and plus it had 3D capabilities. It was like a REALLY souped up and more powerful Sega CD system, meaning far superior video quality. I don't think it had a faster disc-read speed though.
But Playstation 1 outperformed 3DO quite comfortably.
dogeymon83 1 year ago
@1994lebaron you cannot become a videogame expert without knowing the 3DO! it is like the PSOne, it's an earlier 32-bit releasing a year earlier along with the Atari Jaguar
neonrider93 1 year ago
@1994lebaron
Yes, the 3DO has the same graphics as PSone

Your videos never fail to amaze me. Its always cool to know that there's people out there that can get into talking about consoles and gaming as much as I like to. A+ dude, your honestly one of the biggest reasons I started uploading vids. I actually own the Goldstar and the FZ-10 but I need to purchase the accessories.
