  • out of curiosity why are you muffling the genera dry heads? they dont seem to have any resonance to my ears

  • @Killyoudeadnstuff Just experimenting. For my mic placement it helps to kill some of the extra ringing that is more easily detected by the microphones... But you make a good point!

  • @wildbill1240 ha ha, lol. I'll see the video later, since it's not available for mobile devices

  • dang it, now I gotta go back and see what hobes9 said.... wait... I am hobes9

  • @hobes9 haha, yeah...I took long enough to get around to these comments didn't I? Well, that's what meeting a girl will do to you...

  • @wildbill1240 Wtf how many snares do you own?

  • @mythkid1208 Ha, just 5... I borrowed the rest from friends and church...

  • Dw wins. You should've used a Ludwig blackbeauty snare with a power center batter and a hazy 300 resonant. Yumm :D

  • You are awful at tuning hahah.

  • @mattdooley99 You're the first one to mention it... What do you suggest?

  • @wildbill1240 Make sure each lug has the same tightness. A more equal sound will be produced. Do the same on the toms and you won't need muffling ring and they'll sound more full.

Also make sure the bottom heads are tuned right. And make sure the snares have nice wires.

  • @mattdooley99 Cool. I appreciate the feedback. I'll start experimenting. Thanks!

  • @wildbill1240 Well it really depends on what sound you are trying to get out of your snare. If you want a high pitched crack, then both heads should be tight, or if you want fat rock sound then try medium tight on batter and a little looser on the reso. Experiment on different combos to see what you like.

  • @geniusmikel Excellent. Thanks for the advice. I'll be sure to give it a try!

  • I like the DW, Pork Pie, and Pearl. The Steve Gadd sounds triggered to me

  • @mythkid1208 Thanks for the input. None of them are triggered but it could be the reverb gate that sounds a little artificial. I think I improved the miking on the next 17 snare comparison video. Maybe you'll want to check it out?

  • P.S. :

    Sick fills dude!

  • Hey Bill! Idk if you remember me, but I made a new channel. Check out my video! I'll be putting up more soon. As far as snares go, I really love that Yamaha aluminum in this song. And, having a Pork Pie myself, I know that snare has potential. It just has crap heads and tuning in this video haha. And that Fortune sounds really odd!

  • @tbdrummer2 I guess I never responded to this comment but I did talk to you recently on one of my posts. Thanks for finding me again and for all of your support. Yeah, the drums end up sounding better in my 17 drum comparison... Well, take care!

  • DW!!

  • Love that Fortune snare. Has a great range of expressiveness, and sounds great in the mix.

  • @gdvsbp Thanks a lot for the input. I appreciate it. Glad you like the sound!

  • I like the Porkie Pie snare and I have a Pearl Piccolo & Yamaha Anton Fig but this Porkie Pie added spice and your kit toms are just Great !!! Thankx for letting me do a drive by ..

  • @Bee5Too You are welcome! Thanks for driving by. I appreciate your input! Take care.

  • 14x5 black DW

  • dw and the acrylic dude!

  • i wish i could hear the acrylic with some muffling

  • @masterofhi50 You can! It is muffled in my 17 snare drum comparison video.... Enjoy! and thanks for watching this video!

  • yamaha Steeve Gadd for me...

  • black DW only because of the aquarian performance 2

  • Steve Gadd Signature Snare Drum

  • Definitly the steve gadd it had a tight warm sound with good body and a little crack(just a little).

  • The last one! What kind of headphones are you using?

  • @Shelbo3214 Vic Firth headphones...used to be 50 bucks at guitar center. Thanks for your input. I appreciate it!

  • DW by far. The Pork Pie and the Gadd snare sound horrible!! Love the video thanks for posting.

  • @mscmkr01 Most people do pick the DW. It's a hard one to beat. Thanks for the input. You are quite welcome!

  • Fortune Drums Costum (Maple)

  • the Piccolo sounds the worst, next to the Gadd snare, i'd say. the bigger snares have potential, though the tunings are all garbage. i enjoyed the comparison, thanks for posting!

  • @stylerprofyler You are welcome. Thanks for watching both of them!

  • DW snare the best alongside the steve gadd signature. The Pork pies fucking awful.

  • The steve gadd by far. were you using a compressor mic on that? The maple sounded pretty amazing too....

  • @crashintome352 Thanks for your vote. Actually I am running the SM57 mic through a compressor but this is pretty standard for every recording you hear so I think it's fair to include in the test. I appreciate your input!

  • Only one I liked was the first snare. The Pork Pie almost sounded like a tom, the Gadd sounded like any snare with a zero ring on it.

  • more impressed with the hi hats, what are they?

  • @30drumsetslater Paiste Signature Sound Edge Hi-Hats, 14". All other details are in the profile!!

  • i personally like the Steve Gadd snare, sounds really good

  • I liked the Slingerland 6x14 COB.

OH! That's right. It's in my set.

Although none were outstanding, I'd have to say, DW.

Too bad, because you have a ton of money tied up in poor sounding snares. Perhaps it's the micing, tuning, or just the application .

Drums can be made to sound good or bad. There are many variables, including batter and resonant head choices, tuning range, snare wires, and damping. All of those variables have to jive with the shell, hardware and hoops.

    Good work though.

  • @SilenceFriction Thanks so much for the input. I appreciate you taking the time to give me some feedback. I admit that this video's sound did come out a bit lacking. If you want to see the newer one, it's entitled "17 Snare Drum Comparison." Maybe you will find the tuning quality enhanced a bit... Take care!

  • i like the first one u played and that was really good i dont have drums but im hoping 2 get a snare but yeah i really liked that

  • @dskid28 Thanks! Did you get that snare yet?

  • I LOVE THE PICCOLO, we had one but it got jacked from our school ='(

  • steve gadd! :) great cover btw! (Y) keep it on!

  • @stANGER666 Thanks a lot! Will do.

  • steve gadd snare by far! everyone else has a nasty after tone to it.

  • for me it would be the dw or the yamaha aluminum...and i would say the shootout could be improved by either damping each snare or letting each snare ring. The dw head looks like it has a center dot and a damping ring edge...

  • I like that first snare and the maple fortune one. Either would do the ear pleasures.

  • dw or the pearl for certain. I was talking with Mark about it just a few minutes ago - he agrees.

  • @Silkyvenom I agree with you both. Thanks for watching!

  • how did you mic and record the kit cus the toms sound awesome

  • @drumdoc Hey, I use Pro Tools and a lot of microphones/preamps. I list a lot of the details in my profile if you're interested. Thanks!

  • the first one is heaven the blue-custom made one to and the v frum is hell

  • wildbill1240 Is it safe to assume that the 13" piccolo is your personal favorite?

  • @Remko1024 Yes, that is a very safe assumption. How'd you guess?!

  • @wildbill1240 Heh, no guessing involved my friend.

I have been watching your live performances with Ivanrest and noticed..

Very clever stuff I might add,so I will: Clever stuff!

Imma gonna get one myself soonish.. Still torn between the brass and the maple version though.

    Peace and Love.

  • @Remko1024 Ahhh, I'd pick the brass of course! Well, thanks for watching our original music, too. Not many people do but we appreciate it when people comment on it. Glad you liked it. Take care friend!

  • @wildbill1240 awesome ride cymbal...what is it?

  • @tomakiakls Thanks, it's a Paiste Signature Dry Heavy Ride, 21", and the rest of my kit's details are in my profile. Take care!

  • Its funny you know the Yamaha sounds almost like my Tama.Cool playing man.

  • @spudzdad1 Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!

  • Everything but the PorkPie was good.

  • 1.steve gadd.2.fortune drums custom.3.dw

  • Nice work mate but I think rather pointless, it's great to hear the character of these snares way on top of the mix like that but makes no sense for evaluating these sounds critically. As soon as you get them into the mix the sound and character is changed dramatically buy the other instruments in the mix. You can tweek the crap out of soloed track for days but if it isn't treated to fit well in the mix it will can still sound terrible. Less mics, less chanells, more feel, less anal detail. :)

  • @readerwriter Yeah, I agree. There are sooooo many factors that affect the sound of a snare drum that the comparison has to have a lot of "givens" and the variables and "what if you did this" factors will be endless. I tried to just mix each snare like it would be mixed for a recording...like you'd hear it on your stereo if you bought it from the CD store. But hopefully it at least conveyed the basic tone of each snare drum...a general idea...

  • How many plies has the Fortune Drums Snare? Does it have re-ring?

    Thanks!

  • @ctrodrums It has 10 ply and a re-ring! You're welcome.

  • thats not really a controlled experiment. why would you use different heads on drums. they should all have the same heads... this video is pointless now

  • @hobes9 Time, money, resource-limited. I wish I could have. When you boil it down, there are just too many factors to consider and control in this experiment. So I resolved to just give each drum it's "best chance" to shine. I put the heads on them that I think sound best according to each individual drum. Sorry to disappoint though!

  • The Yamaha aluminum probably sounded the best for this music...with the SG sig. and DW coming in next...

  • #1 and #3 fit the song and sound great. Love the Gadd. The PorkPie...was it acrylic? Hate those. the piccolo could have been a tuning thing as it should have cracked but seemed to have a lot of ring. overall, lot of fun to hear. you play well. rock on.

  • @upnunder13 Thanks for the feedback. The Pork Pie is an acrylic snare. I appreciate the compliments! Maybe you'll like some of the other snares in my 17 snare comparison video. Take care!

  • what name of drum is the 1st one, i already know its a DW but is there a name for it? (ex: Ludwig Supraphonic)

  • @Tracebebo I really wish I knew. It just didn't come with a placard or any indication of what series it is. It's from my church and it was purchased in the 90s...that's all I know. Sorry!

  • to be honest...the cymbals win hahahaha good sound

  • @NewDarkAges13 haha, glad you liked those at least :)

  • I own a Pork Pie vented and it owns ass!!!

  • OMG, the Steve Gadd signature snare sounds awsome!!

    Nice video, thx a lot.

  • @wowlhassa You are quite welcome. I'm glad you liked it. I've got two other snare videos like this one....

  • I've got a pork pie acrylic snare (clear with black lugs 6x14).... they are good drums. Very loud. I like a sharp crack so I tighten the hell out of it : )

  • wow I love the sound of everything. what mics do you use for EVERYTHING lol.

  • @pballer225 Thanks a lot! I actually listed each mic in my profile. Check it out! Take care...

  • great skills awsome gear! I wonder if the toms are triggered? I like the less ringy, more fat tom sound myself... Great job wildbill1240

  • @fantastixful Thanks a lot. the sound is all natural, actually. Glad you like them. My favorite tom sound I got is in our band's video "It's Not Like You Died." I'll be making a drum tuning video, too....

  • To my taste, I prefer the 14x7" Yamaha Stage Custom Aluminum, followed by the 14x5" Black DW. None of the other ones sounded good to my ears. But the Yamaha and the DW were great. That's my pick.

  • @balazini haha same here. i hated the pork pie the most there's a horrible ring to it

  • do acrylic's have a really bad ring to them? jw

  • @SgtCrazy128 Only without any muffling like in this video. I put a moongel on it in the next video (check video responses). 17 snare comparison, check it out!

  • @SgtCrazy128 The ring they have isn't a bad ring its a good ring, and if you like them dry throw on a moon gel. Pork pie is a fantastic company

  • i was shocked the performance 2 sounded great

  • @AmbitiousMOnkey1100 Thank you, I'm glad you liked it.

  • Second was terrible for this song. Love the third. forth isn't bad but would sound better in rap music i think. 5th isn't bad. Sixth is better than fifth. the last one makes me think hair metal. My vote is on the third.

  • like the piccolo, and steve gadd

  • Steve Gadd easy. It doesn't suit the music but it's def my favourite.

  • I like the DW snare and also the Steve Gadd was the best.

  • Thumbs up if his pork pie acrylic snare is tuned completely wrong.

  • great local band from glasgow use to get lessons of there lead guitarist

  • The DW snare kicks the shit out of the rest... the Steve Gadd signature hurts my head.

  • I loved the fortune snare the most for a more dry sound and would also love the DW for a change. I seem to love my snare a chepo made by Rhythm Art 14x4.5 but my new snare head a Attatck 1ply med coated broke in 2 weeks now I'm getting a Aqauarian texture coated for free. i had to put my 11 yr. old snare head back on because my band has a gig Sunday and our drummer needs a good sounding snare. -PK

  • @pastorkev777 Thanks for the feedback PK, sometimes it is the cheapest stuff that sounds the best. Every drum is unique...

  • DW and Piccolo for me :D

  • Steve Gadd snare!

  • The Steve Gadd snare's pretty freaking amazing... And I'm surprised I didn't see a Mapex Chris Adler snare.

  • @xxxPinkyGSterxxx haha, I wish I could help you there...but I only have access to so many snares. I think the Ludwig Black Beauty is next on the list to buy...then maybe the Danny Carey signature. I'd have to look into Chris Adler's...

  • Thanks for the great video! My ear is leaning towards the pork pie acrylic. How's the durability? Tuning range? Overall impression?

  • @kalmantzvi1 Well, having recently bought a custom-designed Fortune snare drum, I can't honestly say the Pork Pie is my favorite drum but it is certainly fun to play with and adds variety to the collection when I want a change of pace. It does better in my 17 snare video with a moon gel on it. Good tuning range - I typically like it cranked tight but it has good lows at lower settings. Great for the price. No doubt about that.

  • @wildbill1240 very nice video man! i was wondering if you can get that great bing type sound like you hear in punk bands and metal? thanks man!

  • @ninjaman1777 Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. Yeah, I can probably get that sound. Do you have any specific bands in mind? Usually if you crank it tight enough and put the mic in the right place you can get those punk sounds.

  • @wildbill1240 @wildbill1240 yes the band blink 182 but the drumer likes to change the sound and snares in muiltiblesongs but in this song "FEELING THIS"

this type of sound in the snare is awsome! if you could post a video with that pork pie having a similar if not exact sound please do! thanks a bunch man

you can here the snare better in the break down

  • @ninjaman1777 Yeah, I'll try to do another video with the snare. It's pretty hard to mimic a snare sound because so much goes into the recording of it - room sound, mic placement, overhead mics, drum tuning, equalization, compression, mix, etc.. But I agree, it is a good sound.

  • you should check out a band called logan

  • @darrenguitar I love that band... they toured with Alter Bridge!!!

  • dw and steve gadd for sure!!!!

  • I liked the fortune and steve gadd

  • Which was best you ask? I definitely can't tell, I WANT THEM ALL! The picollo didn't fit the song though, and the Roland was kinda unserious ^_^

  • DW ! :D

i like the Yamaha aluminium too, but i feel that it sounds abit ordinary and it didnt totally catch my attention :P

  • I love the first snare & the Maple Steve Gadd.

  • dw and fortune all the way imao....

wath are the hi hat and the ride ????

    ps great video!

  • @habit1979 Thank you. I'm glad you liked it. I use Paiste Signature series...all of the sizes and details are in my profile.... If you liked this video you might like my other snare comparison videos. Take care!

  • The Pearl one is my favorite one...because I just high pitched snares more :) but I like the DW you used, it's nice :) no offense, but the Pork Pie one kinda sucks...in my opinion anyway, it looks nice though :)

  • A very nice vid, but i'd use some moongel on some of these snares if i were you.

Keep up the good work :)

  • @basjeman11 Hey, thank you very much. I appreciate the compliment. I actually bought moongels after making this video and I used them on almost every drum in my 17 snare drum shootout (which is a video response to this video). So maybe you'll like the sound better...thanks for stopping by.

  • Thanks Bill--telling me it was a heavy drum says it's more likely to be steel--I foung one very similiar on ebay, I hopefull I'll be able to get a sound like yours. I play six nites a week in a bar in Marathon Fl called the Brass Monkey--You said you are in Fl, if you get this way stop in and jam with us-I'm the guitar player in the band and I love your drumming--Im an older guy 59 but I still love to play-there are some videos of us on Youtube-just type in freddie bye -take care Bill and thanks

  • @freddiebye Hey Freddie, you guys are really solid. You've got quite a following too. Ha, I'd love to go as far tropical as you are but I'm all the way up here in Pensacola swimming in oil. But I'll keep it in mind if I ever got that far South. Thanks for the compliments, I'm glad you like my snare drums and my drumming. That's awesome that you play both instruments. You play some good tunes too (Rebel Yell). Keep on rocking!

  • Hi Bill, I still searching--Could you tell me the Model no. of the the Yamaha aluminium--also could you check the exact thickness, is it possible that it's 6 1/2 instead of 7--also Ive seen alot of just old shells on ebay with the same 5 "rings" around the shell, they all are shown as steel, and are shown as 5 1/2 without rims...Does it specify on the label that it is aluminium--how heavy does it feel--could it possible be a steel drum--Ive seen alot of old catologs and no yamahas with 5 rings

  • @freddiebye Wow, that's a tough one... Unfortunately I'm living in Florida right now and my drum kit is back in Ohio! It could be that the depth is 6.5 inches... I honestly cannot remember there being an obvious tag on it with a model number either. It is a heavy drum, so I may have been wrong about it being aluminum. Someone had told me it was at some point but that may be dead wrong. I bought it used so I really know nothing about it! I'm sorry to be of so little help!

  • Actually, I like all the snare sounds. Like the guy said below, I think you just know how to tune good.

  • @Cozmiphonic haha, thanks a lot!

  • love how he tuned his toms. Most people don't pay that much attention to them, let alone know how.

  • @Sladkey83 thanks, I appreciate the compliment!

  • Thanks for the quick reply 4:30 in the morning--you must play late in a bar too....?? I know as micro as I am -I wont stop looking for that snare until I find one. Get some sleep..

  • @freddiebye Haha, well, that's not actually the case. I live in Florida right now on the beach and this 4th of July weekend is quite crazy. There are tons of people making noise right now so somehow it is contagious and I can't sleep. I'm just sitting on the porch with the coolest breeze I've felt in Florida all summer...so it's enjoyable. But yeah, I do need to sleep at some point! You should too!

  • I love the tone of the Yamaha aluminium--i've looked everywhere online trying to find one, and buy one, I've had no luck--any idea how I can get ahold of one?

  • @freddiebye That's a good question. It's such an old drum by now that I'd really only expect to find it in the classifieds or ebay or some used section...maybe craigslist. It is just a stock snare drum for a pretty typical Yamaha stage or tour series drumset. I'd argue that you can make another aluminum drum sound very similar with some careful tuning and the right head...

  • I love the floor tom!

  • I liked the Yamaha! And the DW but I'd like it tuned higher though...

  • my favs are the first the 14x5 dw, i love how it doesn't ring too long and is crisp sounding. second is the pearl piccolo, right after that the maple fortune snare and then the yamaha. the steve gad is good but not my thing and pork pie sounds bad, rings too long after. remember, these are just my opinions.

  • @mycrimsonregrets Cool. I appreciate your opinions. It's nice to hear what other people think. Maybe you'd like my 17 snare drum video, too....

  • Wow 4 is amazing, i want to buy it asap. Mind passing me some info ?

That thing is so crisp and tight !

  • @MikeHawkZeeDrummer Thanks for the feedback...I'm glad you like it. The description is in the video info and it is also in another snare competition in my video responses if you want to make sure you really like it...

  • the steve gadd by far. but u need to get a melody master maple that snare is the shit its the only 1 i use

  • I really like the yamaha aluminum. i've always been a fan of metal snare drums. Also like the deeper ones. really bright and punchy. Oh and I didn't like how the roland sounded at all.

  • I love 1,3,4,5,6,7.

  • Definitely the Steve Gadd Signature

  • Definitely the Steve Gadd Signature

  • I got pretty good results from my camcorder on a tripod - check it out at user rwl7532. (You don't have to listen to the whole 10 minute solo)

  • All the heads were different, right? So hard to really compare. Hate all Pork Pies that I've heard by the way. Would be interesting to see the snares on each. First drum was pretty good.

  • @rwl7532 Yes, the heads were different. It is difficult to compare. Mic placement, tuning, snares, etc. are going to factor in. I tried to make each drum sound as good as it could by giving it a head that brought out its tones well and tuned it appropriately. I have 2 more snare comparisons and these snares are included if you want further listens...

  • I like 1, 3

    I love 4

    I hate 2

I'm not really a fan of 5, piccolo snares arent my thing.

6 is my favorite of the snares

7 will always be my real favorite though as the possibilities are endless.

I really dislike the pork pie one, it sounds like st. anger

  • @jian2069 cool, thanks for the feedback. Check out my 17 snare drum comparison video!

  • @wildbill1240

    hahaha quick reply! :p

    will do!

  • the maple steve gadd sounds amazing.

  • Although it may be too " snarish " for some things, I really like the dry and strong wire sound of the Gadd.

  • wow i like the yamaha, but hey they all sound good. the toms sound huge! awesome! nice playing

  • @grandeline Thank you very much!

  • They need to be tuned better.

  • I like the third, and sixth, but I think the second fits the song the most.

  • I think I like 6, 5, 3, and 1 in that order. Awesome set up man!

  • @BrianS198 Thank you! I appreciate it. It's good to have the feedback!
