this is the music I listened to throughout my "depressed" teen years, whilst revising for O levels during the dark winter nights...takes me back to being 15/16 - now 41 & still remember how i felt at that age, when i hear this.....mind blowing brilliance
I saw them performing this song and all the others many moons ago in Portugal. It was brilliant, one of the best concerts ever! Marillion with Fish yes yes yes!

I'm 18 and was raised listening to the more poppy songs of the 90's but even i love this song, it sends tingles down your spine every time you here it. They don't make music like this anymore :/ Wish i had been able to see them live back when Fish was the singer, would have been amazing!
I bought the video of this in '82 ('83 maybe) - even before I had a video player to play it on. I'd then go to my next door neighbour's house, babysitting, and sit and watch it. It cost me £20, even then, and was one of the best things I've bought.
It was exciting and real - an escape from the mass produced pap that infested ToTP and the airwaves at the time.
This song take me straight back to when I was 15, am now 41. Singing this live is identical to their album, what a talent. Unfortuntately a talent not seen these days. What shame

Eyup, I dont think I will ever see again a band that can perform live as well as these guys could, I went to the garden party in Milton Keyns and was blown away by the standard of their performance, fantastic.
I worked in chelsea a few years ago, doing shifts. I used to love putting this on my Walkman and walking down a deserted Kings Road at about six in the morning in the freezing cold. I am sure passersby must have wondered why I had such a strange expression on my face. A great song of loss, waste and a lot of other things. Still powerful and Rothers guitar work is unbelievable.

this is my favorite, I followed Genesis from 1971 til 1978. After Gabriel left, well.
This plays out about the same. Gosh, times flys, and so does great music.
Not know ing much about this group, I'd agree Fish should have stayed. But easy for us to say. I love this one. Some other songs are Genesis but it's ok.
I need to hear some new stuff, but probably won't like it. This is my type music, in the musical piece.

One of my favourite Marillion songs of all time. One of my favourite songs of all time - forget the Marillion bit. Then again, without Fish, it wouldn't exist. Fish is a poet.
I will never forget seeing and hearing this song for the first time on the the very last old grey whistle test back in 1983. It blew my mind away as I was in the Army at the time and I soon got a ticket to see them at Hammersmith odean. Long live Fish.
When I was 14/15, during the Real to Reel-tour, my brother went to a concert. He didn't knew Marillion, and after the concert he wasn't very positive (!), now more than 25 years later it is still impossible to believe and accept his negative opinion. You can argue taste, but this is a true pity.
How does steve rothery manage to make that fender guitar sound like it's crying. When my head was fucked up aged 16 this song made sense..... it still does now..... AWESOME LYRICS......
So true, this sums up teen angst, mine included. REminds me of those nights aged 15 when I couldn't sleep due to the pressures of O levels and heartbreak!
Remember an older 14yo fella in my street gave me Marrillion's Fugazi to listen to - 1985 I think, amazed me then, led me to check out earleir stuff and have been an afficionado since.
This blows me away! You can take your Dead Can Dance, Interpol, Editors whatever you want - if you want deep stirring music - this is the dogs! No matter what, a Marrillion adict I will remain.
OMG more of this wonderful poem songs, so touching feel always goosebumps with the great sound and songs off Marillion - love it for ever! Thanks for this fantastic uploads!!!
Fortunate enough to see them play this a couple of times - (my bro' was a big fan & got me into them) Hammersmith Odeon at the end of their first 'full' UK tour, and then a short while later when they played for the 25th Anniversary of the Marquee. Great night - they came out & sat around in the bar and chatted - I sat with Fish & a couple of others for 1/2 hour and shared a few beers. Nice bloke. Awesome. 1983 seems a long time ago now ! Wish I could find some Solstice here. Equally brilliant.
Lost my job yesterday - spending the night down memory lane. Myself, Andy, Pete and tall Duncan, 16 years old and "Ratty Carl" says "listen to this". 4 hours later I'm crying, listening to this song on Script For A Jester's Tear through headphones. Wish I was 16 again. Yesterday might start tomorrow but I'm still hoping tomorrow starts today.
@megapawnstar i know what you mean. I was about 15/16 when I first heard the Script for a Jesters tear album, over 27 years ago! great memories for me too...

It's probably been mentioned before, but this song is also played on the '85-tour. As third or fourth song, just before "Misplaced Childhood".

This is an excellent video, it's from the early days, the song was fresh. I had the VHS for years before the youtube and streaming video took off.
I saw them live once but it was from the new singer, not that good anymore.

Thanks Marillion for the great memories.

Anyone has an idea of the references of Steve Rothery's guitar ? Just being curious about that ^^
MrAcousticovers 2 years ago
Im pretty sure his guitar is an Yamaha sg 2000 78 model. I bought the same guitar in 1983 after i saw them live back in time.

Cool thanks for the answer :) I wish I could play the guitar in 1983 ^^
