i almost hate that this didnt work out, because TAGS is one of the all time best series. perhaps THE best. and if this had wored and Barney could have been on it, just think of how many more episodes we could have enjoyed. But then again..i loved it so much, that after Matlock went off i would have been happy if they'd have re done TAGS with them all older (helen crump even had a bit part on Matlock, or 1 epi anyway. dont know if she was living by end of Matlock though)
I don't recall ever seeing this show. Wish that I had. I missed the AGS when it went off. and I thought the worst thing that happened was Mayberry RFD. (shiver) Sorry. I know it had some fans, but I could never like it. I felt the same way with EVERY show that followed the I Love Lucy series. I guess when you have perfection it's hard to accept second best. lol
Knotts left the show over money just as with Aunt Bea. Knotts showed up here and there to boost ratings. And did some flicks like The Incredible Mr Limpet, etc. Jim Nabors left for his own spin-off. I forgot who was Aunt Bea replacement, remembered reason she left was to take care of a sister. And this other Aunt was not her sister.
Don actually left because Andy told him he was going to leave. Don signed up for movie roles, and then Andy changed his mind about leaving. By then it was too late for Don. He already had other commitments.
@YourLastViewer aunt bea didnt leave, she stayed thru the AGS series. There may have been an episode or two that she wasnt in during it, but she came back, IIRC. Knotts left the show because Andy had decided to leave, thus taking show off air. by the time he changed his mind, Don Knotts couldnt get out of it, and had other commitments. which is why he came back as often as he did. color episodes were never as good anyway!
Great video and shows how much these two actors cared about one another. I know this show did not last at all and wish it would of. Love the show and wish TV Land would show at least Mayberry RFD. Thanks for posting this great piece of footage of these fantastic actors and God Bless.
After a certain point, Andy and Don were incomplete performers without each other. Andy couldn't play Andy and Don couldn't play Barney unless Andy and Don played Andy and Barney. They each created and played the two characters, they didn't exist separately.
@SurferJoe1 There was a Andy without Barney in the original draft of the show, Don Knots called Andy and suggested that Andy needed a deputy. Here's a little known tidbit that I think was only mentioned in the first episode; the two characters are cousins. I guess they didnt like that and squelched it from future stoylines.
Without a doubt, one of the strangest, most inexplicable crossovers in sitcom history. The original AGS would never have done this, at least during the first five seasons.
Could you please post the entire episode if you have it? I have been wanting to see this show for years and years. This is extremely rare! Just seeing the two clips has made my whole week. Thanks!!
Don was "Barney Fife" during the first five seasons of the series (1960-'65), all in black & white; then, he got an offer from Universal to star in feature films, and left the series. In the story line, Barney got the opportunity to beceome a "big city detective", and Andy tried "replacing" him (with Jack Burns as "Warren Ferguson") in the fall of '65 when the series went to color, but that fizzled out by early '66. "Barney" did make a "special guest" every season until the series ended in 1968.
Andy wanted Don Knotts to appear in virtually every series he starred in {the last time, on "MATLOCK"}, that's how close their personal and professional relationship was. In this series, Andy played a character similar to "Andy Taylor" {a distant cousin, perhaps}, that "Barney Fife" also knew as well...
who came first on the show, barny fife or that warren guy? how did they do the change and why? barny was 1000% better. but ive always wondered why and how thy did this change. do you know?
As I understand it, Andy was originally contracted to do the original show for five years and was going to end it after that. As the fifth year started, Don had gotten a movie contract, and took it, thinking that would bt TAGS's last year. Meanwhile CBS convinced Andy to stay on for a couple more years, but by that time it was too late for Don to get out of the movie contract.
That's one of several stories, and I think it's basically accurate. Andy and Don have each given separate explanations, including that one. They were always very gracious towards each other, so I think they went carefully on some aspects of why Don left (for professional reasons). They may not have even agreed precisely on it, but it clearly didn't affect their personal or professional friendship. Interesting subject.
As a late answer if you never got one... Don Knotts as Barney was the first. He and Andy were cousins. After about 5 seasons Barney got a job with the Raleigh Police Department and was later replaced by Warren (comedian Jack Burns of "Burns and Shriver) although sometimes Andy would go to Raleigh to visit Barney or Barney would come visit Andy in Mayberry. So he still played a recurring role throughout the rest of the series.
OK, that's explains it ... I had this fuzzy memory that Andy Griffith was on a show set in Greenwood, NC .. There is no real Greenwood, NC, but there is a Greenwood, SC (my hometown) Obviously they were attempting to do something a little different but trying to respark the magic of the orginal, with no success.. It never ceases to amaze me what you can learn (or relearn) here on the old youtube.
Are there any episodes somewhere of The New Andy Griffith Show?

Aunt Bea stayed through the entire Andy Griffith Show and two of the three seasons of Mayberry RFD

@YourLastViewer I believe it was Alice Ghostley who replaced Aunt Bea. She is the only other one that I remember ever being there.

I guess they tired to do the same thing as when they reinvented The Lucy Show to Here's Lucy with some of the same actors.
