  • Anyone remember the MREs had cocoa powder in them? Mix the cocoa with the dairy creamer, sugar packet, coffee and peanut butter (No cheese),add a little water and enjoy. That kept us going during DS1 for 3 days during the push. Nobody ate the entree or the cake or crackers becouse we knew we wouldn't have time to stop and take a shit.

  • I'm not going to get into name calling like others who have left comments, but some of them are correct. When I was in "country" we got 1 MRE per day. You used every bit of it right down to the hard as a rock no flavor gum. We used to "break" ours down just by removing the cardboard. Then we folded it and taped it. All in all it was a good video, and would be found useful to non combat vets.

  • FAIL

  • Faaaaail. I like the other vids, like the lockpicking ones, but this one is shit. 0/999999

  • That Shake contained half your calories you moron. Never throw away calories or toilet paper.

  • This would be handy to do for a BOB or a 72-hr kit. Thanks, ITS. Another site recommended this video for just that purpose. Well done.

  • You can eliminate another 2-inches if the bag, and use less tape to reduce pach weight.

  • how could you remove the strawberry shake!?! those are soooo epic!

  • Non-essential items? Soooo.... wiping your ass is not essential? Trust me, that Tabasco sauce you threw away is essential to kill the taste of that Chicken Tetrazinni! The heaters have multiple uses and if you throw coffee out several 11B's will be wanting to whip your ass. If there is ANYTHING in that bag that could be a moral booster it is the sugar and cream used in ranger cookies or pudding. The best moral booster is getting the fuck out of the situation where you have to eat that shit!

  • Not impressed.

  • That sounds like a pretty appetizing MRE meal there. Too bad those types were circa 2005 (according to MREinfo.com) and probably no longer available.

  • two tootsie rolls from a package that big? nice.

  • where'd you get it???

  • Some reason I want an MRE so bad!

  • For one thing, the term " field strip " is usually intended to be used to discribe hiding something from a potential enemy, as in " field stripping " a used cigarette but, which could give away your position.

BTW, most military grade MREs already come compact as possible, & a " real soldier " would not have time to play around with taping & untaping meals, much less want too, because all that tape makes a lot of noise, not to mention, creates that much more waste an enemey might find, duh.

  • I would rather keep the bigger mre. The things I don't finish ill just save in the bag, such as the cookie, jam, and other non heating items. Save them for a quick snack out in the field, your not going to eat 100% of the MRE. Plus saving the cookies is a big plus and moral booster. And like everyone said unless your cooking this all in am open fire then have fun eating your mre in the cold afghan nights. I'm sure then you'll rethink your choices.

  • This guy is an amature. You keep the heater for cold nights or to make MRE bombs. He also threw away the toilet paper which you NEED. and he also threw away the tabasco and the works for ranger dip, which helps you stay up at night. Yeah, this guy is obviously not combat arms, because he doesn't know the practical uses for all those things he tossed. Also, you put the components in your cargo pockets, not in your ruck. And the bag is used for patching sucking chest wounds. This tutorial is fail.

  • @Nakor420ish DING DING DING your e-val is dead nuts on brother !

  • @Nakor420ish I'm aware of the MRE bomb, but what in the world is ranger dip, and any instructions? Much obliged!

  • @ohnookgo You know the chewing tobacco called "dip" that you tuck under your lip and suck on? Well, you use a couple of the toilet paper squares and you place the pack of instant coffee, the sugar packet, and the creamer packet in the center of the squares. Then you wrap it up tight and pack it in your lip. This will keep you awake in those sleep deprived moments in the combat zone., and because you aren't waisting it fast in one drink, it lasts longer.

  • @Nakor420ish You actually give the guy too much credit. He is NOT an amateur. He is a FRAUD. I'm an amateur.

  • @spfbacon haha! Rodger that!

  • @Nakor420ish - lol, we got a pro here

  • No this guy keeps what he does NEED. You dont necessarily need the things you said he did.

  • @Riooooboy True you don't need to make mre bombs, but until you've slept in a hastey position on a freezing winter night, you don't understand the importance of having the heater in your fart-sack. And unless you want to wipe your ass with leaves, you keep your tp, it's a hot commodity in a platoon, trust me. The tobasco can keep you awake at night as well as the coffee, which is all in the accessory pack.

  • you can store the entree in the heater bag fold it and tape it shut and the pack it in

  • He threw away ur shake remember

  • How im i gonna heat up my shakes? lol

  • I'm a fatty so i like food

  • how is he going to heat the food without the heater

  • Give the heaters to your corpsman to heat IVs in cold weather. And put stuff like pretzels in your pocket to eat on the go. Coffee and tea are good to save, as well as toilet paper and matches. And who doesnt like tabasco?

  • I don't necessarily agree with this stripping process, but I suppose it depends on both the mission, and the preference of the one stripping it. If you're just going on a patrol or something and kind of want to make a "snack bag" out of it this works well.

Personally I toss sweet stuff, it's really not that important to me, and hang on anything high protein and filling. I hang onto crackers or at least 1 wheat snack bread simply because of the fortified vitamins in them. I always keep matches.

  • You dont have to heat that particular meal? Just wondering because I am going with your word that its a good meal and going to buy a couple. Let me know. Thanks !

  • MRE'S SRE DELICIOUS!!!

  • Field-stripping like this is exactly why the government created First Strike Rations. It's a prestripped MRE that is much smaller, but contains about the same amount of food. Only certain troops are issued them. The contents are a little different from a normal MRE.

  • Bad idea.

  • dude matches sugar coffee and tp why throw it hide it in your gear its like ciggerettes in prison

  • I have talked to some guy who do USAR (urban search and rescue) the heaters in there brand are good to heat two meals at -30*C, they know because they have tested it.

  • I drank pre-recall strawberry shake, and I'm still breathing! :) I always liked the shake, and would have kept it in the MRE. But that's me.

  • I wouldn't toss the accessory pack - candy/coffee/matches&TP!

  • Step 1: Open MRE

Step 2: remove everything that isn't needed to make ranger pudding.

    Step 3: tape MRE closed

    Step 4: Done.

  • your a retard .... no soldier (being one myself) wld get rid of anything especially the acessory pack. toilet paper is a godsend we hate not hving it cus when u cant wipe u get wht we call swampass rash and it burns!!!... 2nd the tobasco sause we use for spider and other bites it kills the pain 3rd you get the same result by just getting the air out of the bag throwing out the box and dumping the acessories in the bag ... try it and see

  • your a retard .... no soldier (being one myself) would get rid of the acessory pack or any food item including the shake...in combat sometimes you cant get VERTREP, INREP, or food drops so you conserve all food for these unforseen events and the accessory pack is always kept and stored for many reasons the biggest 2 are "toilet paper in the field is a godsend'' I and all soldiers dont like swampass rash it burns... 2nd the tobasco sause we use for spider and other bites it kills the pain

  • Someone needs to make a good-sized book on the history of military food, with lots of illustrations, with examples of MRE's and rations from around the world, then and now. I heard Napolean was the first to get food preserved for the military by offering areward for who could do it, and someone came up with canning in jars.

  • @Perktube1 There is such a book! Go to Amazon, look up "How to Feed an Army: Recipes and Lore from the Front Lines" by Lewin & Huff.

  • @silvermediastudio Hey, you're right! And I found it at a library. I put a hold on it. Thanx for the info =o)

  • @Perktube1 No problem! It's an entertaining read.

  • made me hungry at first thought it was for airsofting

  • i dont think i would toss the spoon

  • What's the pouch dimension pre and post field stripping and respective weights?

Need to know if MRE will fit in my Tad Gear GPP2 pouch. Thanks.

  • It would seem that MOST of the So called experts on YouTube, well they aren't plain and simple

And would seem that matter your level of field training there is always some out there that knows more than you

I my self am NO expert, and at the same time

I do not fallow many if any at all of the experts on YouTube. All though I do look for tips to improve my own skills when in the wilds

And that is my point use this videos as tools and only use what you need from the ones you watch

  • Heaters may not be "necessary" as you put it; but I can assure you that on a cold day in the mountains or arboreal forests of this planet hot food doth restoreth they spirit in the face of hardships. Most MREs are vastly better tasting heated. If you have a canteen cup and fire or Esbit stove you can heat them up that way too.

  • Well I would never want to do this as there is hardly anything in an MRE anyway.

I have had many US MRE rations but would rather have a British army/NATO 24 hour ration pack anyway as there is so much more and keeps you going longer with about 3000 or 4000 calories although can't remember exact amount.

why would you leave the matches and water purification tablets and the drinks out?

Without the liquids, you shouldn't be eating anyway as you need water to digest the food and the drinks giv

  • @adrn25m

MRE's do not contain water purification tablets. They also do not contain water. The beverages included are powdered. You have to add water, so if you have water to begin with, you can drink it straight. You don't get the nutrition from the beverages, but it's not like you won't have water to begin with.

  • Wow! I never knew so much stuff came in MRE's! I wish they wasn't so expensive but i guess its worth it!

  • @tokorev747777 You can get a case of 12 for around $65.00

Or if you know someone in the military or someone who has access to these ask them to grab you a pack. Some are really good, some are terrible. Just to let you know in case you do end up with some.

  • @airsoftsurvivalman12 I wish my cousin in the Marines would give me some like he said 4 years ago lol

  • @tokorev747777 Haha.. Maybe you can find some on military surplus stores, just search around.. Ebay might be a good place to look as well.

  • @airsoftsurvivalman12 True, There is a thrift like store near where i live, they sell them for about 8 dollars a piece i think

  • @tokorev747777 Thats good. If you get two or three, field strip them then put all three in one bag to save space. If you bought 6, strip 3 put them in 1 bag, strip the other 3, put them in 1 bag

confusing, but you get the drift?

  • @airsoftsurvivalman12 Oh yeah i get you 100 percent! I was going to try that anyways, I have a small pack so field stripping them will help ALOT! Thanks for your info too!

  • nice shirt.

  • Where can I get the military mre ? Besides eBay ?

  • @GodOfWar5341 Army Surplus stores, Gun shows, and contacts in the army.

  • very good video... you could fit two meals for the price of one.. I would have kept the heater tho.. a nice warm meal makes all the difference.. but i agree, u can do without.

  • I prefer Not to strip the IMP ( yes im in The Canadian Forces) , Because it may take up abit more room and weigh some more , but you get the energy and nutrients you need out in the feild.

  • Hi,

what your oppinion about getting a decent seam-sealer and re-seal the MRE and cut away excess material?

  • @tigerfan1211 I work in San Francisco CA as a fire fighter and I get them for free by the case but surplus stores should have em and you can always get some on line like cheaper than dirt.com never tried there's but that's where I get mine.

  • Well in that case you bring up a good point . I recently tried a few mre there ok

  • When I read the title - I thought it was a joke

  • how long do mre's last

  • How much room does a spoon take ? Or do you care to eat like a animal

  • @MrBawston It's more a case of space, a spoon is an irregular object you wouldn't be able to re-pack it back into the new sized bag without producing a strange shape. But more to the point, if you have 10 MREs do you really need 10 spoons? Just keep one in the first meal you plan on eating and save it for the next one. Same with an MRE heater. You could carry one reusable heat source (like a pop can stove and a small fuel bottle) and it saves size and weight on what you're dumping.

  • @MrBawston

After a few months in the field pulling missions as an 11B I didn't feel like there was much difference between me and an animal. The "3 second rule" increased exponentially in relation to the time out. Most MRE's can be sucked out of a corner cut out of the package which is good because, speaking for me and my men we generally had to eat on the move. However, most of us did keep a spoon tucked in our chest pockets right next to the Tootsie Rolls which were there for quick access.

  • I open everything and put into a big sandwhich bag with the heater chemicals. The heating chemicals brings out the flavor I think.... I agree about the strawberry shake, cut the calories dawgg.....

  • em ar ii :D

  • were did you buy yours att

  • That's a good idea if ur a civilian but an the army or way ever branch ur in u will be so hungry I no cuz my dad n cuz were in the army/air force when u get the chance to eat u need all those calories plus ur going to want to eat everything in it too but still usdull for when I go hiking thnks

  • @Cenah2

The government is the only thing that is allowed to sell them so you can get them at an army surplus store but if you want them cheaper some people sell them on eBay without getting caught.

  • i rather have the big 1 and id save the matches

  • where can i buy one of these???

  • You are won heck of an efficient man. Love your vids! Awesome!

  • I dont think people out in the fields would want to eat with their fingers after all the dirty things they have touched.

  • how are u going to eat the chicken u gotta warm it up

  • save size, but what a waste of time

  • if you do that how long can u keep it

  • The whole point of an mre is to eat all those calories they r losing and fill them up after a good days of work but that's good. If you are hiking or camping.

  • what was the deal on the recall on the shakes? why did they recall them?

  • @clickingclock Salmonella contamination is what I heard. Don't know any details though -- it can't be too many production dates -- they should have recalled it and fixed the problem as soon as they found out, so I would think most of them are safe. Just don't know WHEN the bad ones were made, so unless I find out, I'm tossing 'em all.

  • Does strippin' the MRE ruin it's shelf life, or is it still good to go as it was before being stripped?

  • No, because the individual items are still sealed they retain their shelf life.

  • Sweet, thanks.

  • field strip also known as rat f***in an mre

  • @lilcobra58 HAHA! yup

  • Just thinking, why not keep the heater? its useful and takes up about as much space as a peice of paper.

You guys are lucky Canadian MRE's (Called IMPs) dont have heaters :(

  • @Desette Heaters aren't "necessary" hence the reason for discarding it. Thanks for the comment!

  • I'm just jealous you guys get heaters :)

  • @ITStactical warm food is essential in cold places mate...try living on cold food in the snow...

  • @Desette the canadian ones dont come with them, but u can buy heaters, and in the military i think they give you heaters, so its all good

  • @Desette We also have the cheese omelettes :P

  • I hope you didn't drink that strawberry shake bro. Great video.

  • Definitely not after the recall LOL...

  • @ITStactical u ever have an MRE that tasted bad or are they good i dunno i never had one

  • Why not ditch the bag too and use the main course and the crackers as top and bottom, sandwiching everything in between and then taping it?

Thanks for all the useful info!

  • That might work too, but the bag keeps everything together and adds another waterproof layer and prevents the internal packages from getting damaged.

Wouldn't be a good day in your backpack if your spaghetti got torn open on a sharp edge.

    Thanks for the comment!

  • you could even use a vaccum sealer for repackaging.

  • Good tip, Thanks for the comment!

  • Nice wrapping job, your mother would be proud.

This is great because it's still waterproof (all the individual packaging).

I hate to say it again but I really want to see the dudes face. Feels a little uncomfortable. Is this why you don't show him?

    - Makes him feel awkward

    - Can't fit the face and the items being discussed in camera frame (but if that's the case, then zoom in more on the item and less of the shirt... think "nutnfancy"

    - No extra person available to operate cam.

    - Security

  • If I was the videos author I would feel a little uncomfortable with someone having so much desire to see my face...but hey, whatever floats your boat dude...

  • Hah, no, it's not like that. It just makes me feel like the guy doesn't have a head! I've done work in the video industry and we never tried to "cut" or crop off people at the natural body parts, like the neck, elbow, knees, waist... it tends to make the viewers uncomfortable. But see, if they only showed the hands while showing the product, it would be ok.

  • It's all about security Mike.

  • Then it's understandable. But can you zoom in on the product more? Unless you are trying to sell t-shirts.

Oh, or you could do the whole backlit and deep voice change. I love that way of disguising people!

Either way, just glad to hear this is a reason. But even Nutnfancy shows his face (but doesn't tell his branch or type of service or even name) most the time.

  • LOL

  • Cool.

  • Cool video, kind of common sense, but then again, some people might not think of it. :-) By the way, where can you get one of those nice t-shirts?

  • GGruendlich do you mean the shirt in this video?

  • Yes. Maybe it's a stupid question, I dunno, but it looks really nice, I'd like to get one. :)

  • Not a stupid question at all. The stupid ones are the ones you don't ask LOL. I'd post the link here but YouTube doesn't allow URL's in the comments. go to w-w-w-.-c-r-y-e-p-r-e-c-i-s-i-o-n-.-c-o-m they're for sale direct from the site.
