The director really brought out the humor of this piece, I love Adrian West here. But yeah, the April is irritating- could somebody have told her to stop sounding suddenly British at points during the song? Where is that coming from?
excuse me being black mean you only hang out with black people, i am black and hang out with many like minds and people LIKE my self some are black most are not. people are defined by themselves and personality it doesn't always relate to race, bobby being black has no effect on the character it may actually add to it cos it makes him more the outsider but he is playing the character the race has no effect on that
A point in the show is actually that Bobby only hang out with people like himself, him being black contradicts the script. Also, all of you who criticize the actors are pointing your fingers in the wrong the direction, because this entire production was directed in the hysterical manner in which the Hannah James is singing and acting. Not her doing a bad job, but bad direction.
Lester is probably the only actor I like in the Donmar production, and he really does well here. He's not as good as Esparza or Dean Jones, but he's still extremely good.
I'm sorry - I just can't stand this production. Their "american accents" are just horrific. The singing is shrill and doesn't do the actors justice...
I love how he looks at his watch while singing "You're just a very special girl. . ." It's little things like that that make the difference in scenes like this.
I have seen several interpretations of this scene and while the Robert character does very well in making it original, I want to strangle the woman playing April. TOO MUCH WOMAN!
very good, insightful perception, and nicely put. as long as you understand, sweetheart, somebody's gotta be lame for the song to make sense. accolades to Hannah! (...and what's his name?)
the more cuts i see/hear of this donmar production the more i'm taking to it. company has always been a cerebral sort of concept musical which from a distance eluded to deeper gut feelings, but always cool and distant. i've always accepted this interpretation and always admired the show, its wit and ultimate heart -- in being alive. but this procuction seems less to be about those almost cerebral tableux and more about being- throughout, not just at the end. i'm very impressed.
Meh. Whoever is playing April is obnoxiously over the top. This whole production is just very overdone, there's no subtlety. Plus, was nobody around to tell those British actors not to say "Apreel"?
True, but that is what I love about a lot of British musical theater the focus is more on the acting behind the singing rather than having the world's best voice but with no clue to the idea of what's being sung
@Song27 Why can't there be some kind of compromise -- or better yet, a joining of the two components (one that is pretty much inherent in the term "musical theater")? These two may be a BIT better as actors than some others in these roles, but their voices are AWFUL. If drama is all that matters, why not just scrap the music and have them speak the lyrics? Silly.
@Song27 i completely agree. see douglas hodge and roger allam. actors winning tonys and oliviers for city of angels and la cage aux folles one week, titus andronicus and henry IV the next!
There's another clip of this song on youtube (with Julia Mackenzie & David Kernan) which is so much better than this one. This is really weird and April can't sing.
(show was meant to be 'shows' :-))

I have this whole show on dvd; funny that April, Robert and one of the girls eventually got to play in big show like Will and Grace, CSI, etc :-)

I LOVE the way these two acted this scene! In spite of all the libretto it feels real.

I love his delivery of "not JUST BECAUSE you're bright," but he could have used some vocal coaching. Or some more vocal coaching.
