  • why the hell is there a "how to make sausage" at the realted videos? xD

  • NIFTY

You have so many great videos, but this is one of the best.

  • Went I went though recruit training we slept in panchos with the poncho liner attached like a sleeping bag. Also when I went though the jungle warfare course in NTA ,oki japan they taught us to make a raft outta 2 alice packs ( with waterproofed gear inside) and a poncho. They are also great for litters to carry wounded and to gather water. An all around good peice of gear.

  • why carry tent stakes for no longer than what they take to make??

  • Good stuff. Thanks.

  • love that poncho!!! used it in the military!! its quicker to set up with bungee cord, geat vid having flashback 30 days of straight rain on that thing!

  • good job, thanks for sharing.

  • A poncho can be used as a tarp to make shelter. Can a tarp be worn like a poncho?

  • Nice vid....what's the best source for the military ponchos?

  • y not put the poncho on instead of building a shelter,i mean thats what there made for

  • @Bassaholics123

I would say because you would still feel the dampness and still can get chilled to the bone. Plus you can not really cover your self and your gear that well depending on the size of it. But since he is resting he put it up. Do NOT machine wash them when they get dirty. They lose their waterproofing. That particular poncho (military) is made for many purposes and you can even link more than one to it with buttons. Linking more than one makes even better tents for over night.

  • @Jerrid3 ya that does make sense,if your to far from your car and its getting late i could see making a shelter out of it.

  • @Bassaholics123

If it is good weather and no mosquitos you can just use the poncho as a hammock. I never have personally done that but I have heard you can. Besides we use to carry simulated wounded on it like a stretcher so if it can hold a 200lbs man and some of his military gear, why not a a regular person?

  • @Bassaholics123 I think the idea was just to show how to rig a poncho shelter... If I've got one or two miles to go, I'll probably put the thing on and hike out. But folks often forget that ponchos are more than just a rain getup.

  • @Bassaholics123 If you do that, you will get cold and in cold weather you will die. NEVER use a poncho when it's wet, it will make you very cold. That's why they only wear them on hot rainy days with only a shirt under.

  • WHAT PONCHO IS IT???? I want a miitary poncho nylon with gromet holes, Theres so many knockoffs out there online. Where can I get one thats milspec and not one of those HEAVY pvc ones but a current military one. SOME ONE HELP!!!

  • @Serpentine86ALR

A military store. Just make sure the quality is good if buying used. A lot of people use to wash their ponchos in the washer because they are lazy or pressed for time. NEVER machine wash them. It loses it's water repellent qualities. I heard you can spray it with some thing, but why bother with the wear and tear? Buy a brand new one or a very good used one.

  • @Jerrid3 ok but what about tarps, i thought you could machine wash tarps?

  • @relfexreaction

Well the military tarps that I know of, which are to cover a BFV, would be too big for a home washer or even an industrial one. We use to just put them on the concrete, use water, soap and big brooms. If you are talking about smaller tarps or civilian ones you need to read what it says, but I doubt you are suppose to wash it in a washer.

And the tarp I described above you wouldn't want to carry it on you, very heavy for a tarp. I know of full tents lighter than that. Haha.

  • nice vids man !!!

  • great video with great info... one thing that i do is i carry one poncho like u said but i also carry a small camo or brown tarp(6x8 or 8x10 ft.) i personaly like the tarp better for a shelter... the shelter gives u more room for equitment and mabey a fire.

  • I carry a silnylon lightweight backpackers poncho about 3 ounces. Very nice.

  • his voice is so cool :P

  • good thing I got me one of those an a gortex jacket

    thank you Marine Corps..lol

  • He said 2-3 miles, NOT 100 yards..

Great video with great info... Thank you!

  • If you have only 100 yards.. Just dont stop lol...

  • Nice gear...

  • Seal off a tarp and expect a nice drip from the walls.

  • great video, very informative.

  • Nice gear...5 stars resort in the middle of the forest, just the way I like it.

    Vero pro bro.

    kEEP THE GOOD VIDEOS COMING.

  • this is uber cool, i always look foreward to your updates

  • this is a good way to make a small tarp work much bettor and be bigger ,more room. love and peace mik

  • My Boy Scouting has told me to tie a taught-line hitch (if I want it to be safe). If you are in a windy area or have to stay put for more than one day, I wouldn't recommend a slip-knot - the problem is that it can't handle long durations of stress.

Also, you should have used a clove-hitch to secure the rope to the tree.

  • what about a video on long term survival?

  • painsey - plenty of information about that on the survivalist boards forum

  • thanks mate, peace and beer

  • make sure to bring them back home with you even if they are junk so people can't raise a fuss about littering.

  • what would a poncho like that run me? Mine is a better version of the cheap ones you mentioned. Been using it for years but that one looks to be a better material and a bit more multipurpose.

    Good work Kev!

  • Get them from cheaperthandirt (dot) com

  • They are mildew resistence. Can be snaped together. Are very long to cover all your clothing. Tough nylon. You can also purchase quilted liners for them.

  • Thanks man!

  • You're welcome. But I'm a chick.

  • It's slang dear, I wasn't calling you a man :D

  • I purchased mine for $19,97. The carry bag is made of the same material. I noticed that they are out of atock right now, carring only the liners (which I advise you also get.). The item number is: BJR014 That again is at: CheaperThanDirt (dot) com You can give them your email address and they will notify you when they are back in stock. I do not advise eBay as they are highly over pirced. Good luck.

  • Thanks for your help,um...girl :)

  • This set up will not keep out the rain trust me, the rope goes under the tarp and cappilary action will cause the water to run under the tarp.

  • @bushman11865 what if u were to tie a knot on each side of the tarp right at the edge of the tarp, the knot would keep the water from running under the tarp, and would just drip off at the knots.

    maybe?

  • Correct. Tie a knot in the grommet on each side of the peak and it does keep the rain water from wicking along the line into the shelter. I learned that in JOTC, FT Sherman, Panama.

  • ha ha no prob dude

  • GET"R"DONE & HAVE FUN!

    DEO VINDICE!

  • hi, do you know what the dimensions are when its fully stretched out?

  • Generally 58x86. Be careful what your poncho is made of. You want it to be mildew proof and tough.

  • Thanks for the video.

It is allways good to get things like this into my head. I certainly hope I will never need to use this information, but it is good to have.

  • Tents are heavy and only really serve one purpose. Poncho's FTW!

  • That would of sucked discovering a snake making your open pack as a home. xD

  • Just carry a small tent or hang out at the mall instead

  • Good advice and good video!

  • Kevin in the Everglades there are no trees But have more then one cheap .89 cent and a US Miliary Poncho, I may have some old US Air Force gear...

  • I see a lot of Maxpedition gear in your videos. Are they paying you to advertise or do you just like their stuff?

  • zetiazetiazetia - what kind of car or truck do you drive?

  • 1973 3/4 Chevrolet. Why?

  • They probably send him free gear once in awhile because he is a good customer, and he does reviews on everything he gets. But it's what he likes to use and its his preffence to use em,

  • @zetiazetiazetia He get's paid, but hell, 1, it's tough gear and 2, it's a free country.

  • anyone know where to get a good poncho? The last one I got leaked on the neck stitching, soaking my entire pack and myself. I am looking for pure quality... thanks!

  • Try getting a military surplus poncho. Don't buy the junk ones from Wal-Mart or any other big consumer store.

  • army surplus store and buy a camo poncho there good quality

  • YouMockMe - check the survivalistboards forum, there are some merchants on there that can get you just about anything you want.

  • I would but if I went there I would never leave...

  • How much did that cost Kevin?

great idea for a quick shelter.

  • i always look forward to your videos

  • Very informative, thank you!

  • so that is why my pancho has the holes like in a tarp, I was wondering, I think I got mine from a military surplus and it is just a plain olive drab, you know the clasic military collor that isnt cammo.

  • @thunderdreamer1

Another tip is if you have two ponchos you can snap them together and have a larger shelter. You can also get tent poles for them.

  • Perfect!

I just got one of these.

    Very helpful. :)

  • nice

  • Good Solid Video

  • Nice video never seen a poncho adapted to this use thought it would be smaller.
