The gladius is probably accountable for more deaths on the battlefield than any other sword in history , Julius ceaser said his legions killed a million gauls in his 10 years there and considering the roman empire lasted from 250 bc till 450 ad the potential is obvious ! . Its a thrusting sword used in close when standing shoulder to shoulder with other romans . It could also decapitate if needed as st Paul found out when taken to rome for his appeal as a centurion from the 3rd legion cleeved
If you can get a large block of wax, that is what is used by the laboratories who do ballistics testing. They use wax, simply because it has a similar overall density to soft body tissue. That really will show you how effective a weapon the Gladius truely is.
I purchased this directly from the importer, Imperial Weapons. Though you can get them easiest now from the Arms of Valor website.
This hilt has not loosened at all on this sword. It's as sound as the day I received it, though it has been through more abuse since this video was made.
What you are hearing at 1:16 is the blade vibration slowed down. Sound does weird things in slow motion.
Thanks for your comments. Tire thrusting does have a dulling effect if done very much.
IMO sword grips should be much like the grip on any other tool with which alignment makes a difference (axe, hammer, etc).
I have noticed that the grips on various models of Gen2 Gladii are round instead of oval. It's something that I thought needed to be addressed by the manufacturer. But by now, it may have been.
SWORD BUYERS GUIDE is NOT trustworthy!! SBG is in bed with GEN2 swords and Clyde Hollis. SBG strongly encourages and promotes the sale of GEB2 swords even though Ce Hollis owner of GEN2 sold a batch of poorly tempered swords. SBG does not tolerate any discussion of this issue and censors any comments on their site of this issue. This is a safety and consumer issue! Said simply, SBG is GEN2's site and their salesman. SBG is not unbiased. Beware!!

Would have been cool to see more stabbing, since the gladius mainly was used as a stabbing blade. By the way, where do you get all those mats, bottles and tires? ;p
I agree on the "more stabbing" thing for Gladii. But it's kind of hard to come up with "stabbable" targets.
I buy a few mats fairly often, and I get the plastic bottles from recycling at work. They really don't care when recycling whether the bottles are in one or two pieces when they cart off the bin. ;-)
Yeah, that round handle rolls a bit unless you really concentrate on thumb pressure and guidance. The first thing I did to modify this sword was grind away the rings/ridges, then shape it into more of a reverse hourglass shape with an oval cross section. It made a HUGE improvement in handling. And since the grip is bare wood, it was easy to refinish. I think it looks much better now, and the handling is a great improvement.
I will return your thumbs down to a 0 rating and just inform you instead. It could be used as both a slashing and a thrusting weapon, though most effectively perhaps as a thruster, especially in formation.
Interesting. I never knew there were different generations of the Mainz. I've read that there were three designs of the gladii; the Mainz, the Fulham, and the most famous and latest Pompeii design.
I am interested in Purchasing a blunted gladius. what company can you reccommend?

What I`d really like to see is how well this weapon does against a pig carcass, that would really show the lethality of the gladius.

When he started hacking the tire starting at 1:16 it sounded like it was near breaking point, you can here the tang and the hilt loosen.

where did you purchace this sword and for how much$.

Does this not dull the blade for slashing? Also, I like how you held your left arm while thrusting.
Interesting comment at the end of the video, is the grip an issue when using the gladius, or was it just on the one you owned?
Other then that, how does it handle?

I actually liked this video, you don't see many good videos for any swords other than the katana-nazis. Thanks for posting.

And there are so many of those. So many.

@ShooterMikeSBG You can make scarcrows and use them as targets the same way gladiators did.

gladius was a thrusting sword not a slasher
