I know this is a strange question, but, what music is playing in this video? I'd like to download some nice Asian instrumental music, and liked this music very much.

I was a blackbelt in Shotokan, I think it's shitty and ineffective. The punching technique of keeping one on the hip for me seems stupid. Boxing and kickboxing are the best for standing strikes in my opinion... And there are some others like Muay Thai but I never tried that out. I heard traditional karate has a kickboxing stance.
@SpyWhoLovedHimself It depends on how hard you train and how good your teachers are. Lyoto (Ray) Machida is a world-class MMA fighter and he's primarily using Shotokan. The Japanese police use it, too. Almost every martial arts style works for what it's meant to do, but that doesn't mean that everyone who uses the style is doing it right. There are excellent Shotokan fighters, and there are also worthless ones, and everything in between.
@SpyWhoLovedHimself I don't know who your teacher was, but if he gave you a blackbelt and you were still taught to punch from the hip, he must be a fraud. That's just a training drill to teach attributes. In real sparring and kumite, the hands are up like in kickboxing. It's much more alive. If you think it's shitty and ineffective even after reaching black belt level, you must have gone to a shitty school. Most styles look similar when sparring. It's the small differences that define the style.
@hulkout666 well I was one belt from the blackbelt and had my grading coming, but I hurt my leg and I could never be bothered to go back. We were taught to punch from the hip the entire time. We never really did sparring, ESPECIALLY not contact. I think I did sparring once in my entire time there, the other times we just paired up and practiced our blocks etc whilst the partner would throw a punch from the hip at us.
@SpyWhoLovedHimself Definitely sounds like your teacher was a fraud. It's easy to teach a class that way even if you suck. I had a similar experience with a so-called traditional Shaolin Kung Fu school and all we did was forms and "dead" drills. When I started training in the Wing Chun school I'm still involved with, we got into the full contact and alive stuff right away. That's the only way you'll learn to fight. Fighting must be alive and trained that way if it's going to work.
@SpyWhoLovedHimself See, the fact that you could never be bothered to go back speaks it all. A proper Sensei and Karate dojo would keep you wanting to come back. I broke my toe in class about three weeks ago and I was back in class the following week! I had major back surgery a number of years ago that kept me away from formal training for YEARS and I still practiced on my own and am back to formal training. Find a better school and try again, never give up.
They might look sluggish because they have been training for several hours in this seminar. I poop out too after hourse of basics and drills like these. Once fatigue sets in, you try to conserve by going lighter with your movements. Wait until all of these complainers reach the age of 50 or 60, we will see if they are still training.
yes i was dissapointed in the techniques of the shodans? but it is a usa club, where they do give them away so they doon't spit their dummies(pacifiers?) out
a lot of old guys here. sad. I am noticing that more and more in all different dojos that I visit and train in. I have been training since I was 10 years old, 30 now. Ever since I was a kid, I was always the youngest. Now, at 30, many times that is still the case. Depressing. Karate needs youth, or it will die.
i don't get it, so many blackbelts.. none really showing the dedication or spirit i would expect of a black belt in my club. so much for breaking a sweat.
Jesus, that's why some dojo in shame, they go for money, students jump 2-3 belts ahead. Earn black belt in 2-3 years... In a normal not money oriented dojo, even if you good, you have to keep practise longer, and earn black belt after 6-7 years or most. Normally over green belt, you graduate once in a year. Not monthly....
@Viscohu from what I've read of japan, outside of school, most hobbyist go to the dojo a lot less than the average american hobbyist. So its not surprising that the time to reach black belt is lowered. It could easily take 2-4 years, and that wouldn't be farfetched. Black belt isn't like the end all, its just a rank like the others. 2-3 dan are what take time and a person might never reach either or ever move beyond it.
@gregor1972 he is pretty thin but you'd be suprised. my sensei looks like an old man until he's standing right in front of you ready to kick your ass.
when i tested for orange my sensei said that i was so advanced it looked like i'd been doing karate for ever. so he let me skip orange and awarded me the blue belt
@spum789 did you know all the kata and self-defenses for the level or were you taught it after you were awarded the belt? that's a lot to learn at once if you only know the curriculum up to orange.
@SnollaSnax i knew all the kata and self defense and strikes required to test for blue belt. My sensei didn't just give me the blue belt, he made me do the required kata and self-defense movements.
At 1:57 I think he says not to be stiff but to let your tendons flex you around while being a little more relaxed like at 2:00. When you are ready to explode into a powerful counter or first attack, using this will fool your enemy to where you are moving.
I just realized that I work near the highschool they are training in.....lol small world

That's because either your teacher was a fraud it you didnt understand the techniques. Some schools feel bad failing students during the promotions
