There is no doubt PB is when the boys really came into their OWN and sharpened the great musical skills that they already HAD, but without LTI we would have never gotten PB. LTI was party yes but the beats were new and fresh, the lyrics were different, the vibe, the attitude, everything they did had people’s attention. PB is still under-rated in a lot of ways though. Your average music lover is still gonna mention LTI first, so I’m always trying to PIMP PB as much as possible to people!
I'm 43 and born and raised in Detroit, Detroit black radio couldn't play it enough! The 12" single of The New Style/Paul Revere absolutely KILLED in the black clubs on the License to Ill Tour which I saw in Detroit and Chicago, was 50/50 blacks in the audience. Make no mistake Paul's Boutique is a good album but again it's not close to License to Ill
These are The Beastie Boys I loved! Creative spontaneous and bursting with energy! If they could've made Paul's Boutique in NY on Def Jam with production help from the Bomb Squad and The LA Posse it would've been better than the MASTERPIECE Licensed to Ill
@andrehendrik No we don't agree! Paul's Boutique is a quality but it isn't remotely as good as License to Ill! License to ill is a landmark in hip-hop! It changed how hip-hop records were made and was MASSIVELY received by hip-hop heads, pop radio, black radio and everywhere else. License to Ill is generally regarded as one of the 10 best hip-hop albums in history! Paul's Boutique although a good album not anywhere remotely as well regarded as License
@mauricetaylorII Not exactly. Licensed to Ill was commercially successful, but wasn't well received by black radio at all. In fact, even the NYC hip-hop community (except for Run DMC) treated BBs as outsiders. Licensed to Ill brought hip-hop into the mainstream, but in order to do that it had to have a lot of "rock" to it. So yea, it's a landmark album, and most of the songs on it have stood the test of time. But it's not considered on par with classics >>>>
@mauricetaylorII >>>> that pushed the genre forward like It Takes a Nation of Millions and some of the best work by DJ Premier and Pete Rock. Even Beastie Boys have acknowledged that on much of Licensed they were just goofing off, whereas with Paul's Boutique they were adamant in showing the world that they took hip-hop serious. So, among afficianados, people who really get into the production of beats and samples, Paul's Boutique reigns supreme. It's not even a contest.
@andrehendrik I respect your opinion although we disagree and that's ok! Listening to your side, you like more beats and cutting edge production. Paul's Boutique was DEFINITELY that! They grew up musically and creatively and wanted to feature that growth on Paul's. Technology changed DRASTICALLY from 1986 to 1989. The Dust Brothers introduced them to an entirely different way to make records, using computers, muliti-layered samples and pushing the boundaries of what you could do in the studio.
Paul's Boutique from a production standpoint was really creative and technically far more advanced than License HOWEVER...at the end of the day it's about making banging songs! License has WAY more better songs Paul Revere, The New Style, Rhyming & Stealing and Slow & Low just hit Detroit and every urban city with the force of a typhoon! FM 98 the biggest black radio station in Detroit has a countdown of the top 8 songs of the day. License to Ill had 3 songs in the top 8 for 2 months
