  • Man...he's totally IN that song..he ain't just singing it! I think of a friend of mine who was arrested and jailed for a murder he never committed, when we were kids. The truth was finally revealed and he was released, but the damage to his mind was already done, and he was never the same again...a great song like this one always invokes memories in the listener

  • Do you know what this song is about?

  • This song makes me thing of a family member who was arrested in 1984 just a couple days before Christmas he was convicted in 1985 and fought it until 1987. He is an innocent man. I love you.

  • "An Innocent Man" is one of the best albums ever written.

  • The man with the high vocals is Pete Hewlett !

  • that is NOT George Simms, it is Pete Hewlett!!!!!

  • wow hahah ya lets beef on the billy joel page live in 1984 hahahah 2 funny

  • usually sings good but here he is average and looks like a spacker

  • @alisonsdragonfly Of course, you should have signed a record deal with Sony instead and show us what real music is.

How could we be so dull and listen to Billy, when you have been around singing thousands of songs a year.

  • Comment removed

Only you I guess! hahaha : )

  • @alisonsdragonfly I fail to see how anything you said held any relevance to what I said.

What do you mean "How he used to sing?" This was filmed in 1984... at the high of his early career...

And still, you complain about him, but I'd love to see you top him.

I never said you weren't a girl, I made no mention of any accusation you weren't, i quite frankly couldn't care who, or what you are. Your last comment was ridiculous.

    Regards, Sergeant Aaron

  • 1 guilty man

  • Maija you should know. But; not for long.

  • He should sing this in court, when someone is about to get framed

  • @mediblue9 i agree

  • Enter here to find: Billy Joel - An Innocent Man (live in Russia)

    This version is much better!

    Just listen to it!

  • One of Billy Joel's best songs! Well done...

  • Frank and George Simms- Two of the best vocalists of their generatio. Not many know them by name, but they've worked with some of the biggest in the bisiness. You gotta hear these guys!

  • The man at the height of his career touring his most commercially succesful album

  • I was there. Thanks for posting this, the day before my finals. Love this man

  • Billy Joel=AWESOME singer, AWESOME musician, AWESOME songwriter, AWESOME performer.

  • Nice Video, Billy's the man. Very Joe Cocker..ish 1:28 to 1:35.

  • @022877

    I absolutely agree! ))

  • He managed the remarkable feat of writing a song that he couldn't actually sing... Impressive, paradoxical, and dumb all in one!

  • @modusvivendi2 When he first wrote this song, he figured it would be the last time he could hit a note that high, so he did an all-out reach on the album, and I guess he couldn't replicate it a year later on tour.

On his most recent tour, he dropped the song a key, and can hit that note himself again.

  • @supermario103 I understand what you mean but this album came out Aug '83 & this was Jun '84 & he toured it around the world for over a year. So it's one thing to hit the high notes in a one off performance but something else to do it night after night when also performing 20+ other songs.

He was also still smoking then too & has always insisted he is more a writer/musician than a singer anyway, so he knows him limitations, although I think he also knows his voice is better than he makes out.

  • unbelievable when George Simms sings and Billy Joel follows, sounds fantastic

  • I love this song!

  • One of the background singers is George Simms. The other is a guy named Peter Hewlett.

  • Always one of my favourites thanks for posting I saw him live in Brisbane in the late 80's great show and he actually did a backflip off of the piano the crowd went ape

    great concert great talent

  • @supermario103 When I saw him in 2007, he lowered the key a little and did the notes himself. Liked it better.

  • I love Billy Joel's An Innocent Man which reminds of Tom Selleck going to prison in the 1989 movie. The song reminds of Jimmie Rainwood wearing a black leather jacket who just out on parole sitting on the steps of the porch in his old neighborhood thinking about his past relationship troubles with ex wife. The man also gets into fight in a bar with another man. The man now walks around with his parole board papers while walking his Old English Sheepdog like a crazy man.

  • This is the Innocent Man Tour which I saw in 1984 at Madison Square Garden. Billy would never admit it but he's one of the greatest poets of the 20th century. I sure hope music comes full circle because the music that's out today is utter crappola. If it wasn't for MTV making careers; Spears, Aguliera, Byonce, Lady gag-gag would all be flippin' burgers at Mickey D's.

  • nothing better than live concert

  • The man who sings all the high notes on that song is Peter Hewlett.

  • brilliant! remember listening to this with my grandad, always reminds me of him

  • Peter Hewlett bustin' some notes on that chorus.. real tenor

  • saw this concert in 84 had it on betamax love it

  • This concert should be on DVD it was on TV so why not? It would sell loads, it;s one of the best by anyone ever.

  • I was there four rows from the stage.....brilliant concert...one of the best

  • Does anybody know who the guy singing the high part is?

  • It's George Simms, think his brother Frank is there too. The two of them also did backing vocals for Bowie's Serious Moonlight tour.

  • Hi DundeeBhoy2007,

    I think you're wrong. It's Pete Hewlett.

  • Comment removed

  • SierraAlphaMusic, the guy singing the high notes is Peter Hewlett, not George Simms.

  • SierraAlphaMusic,

    It's Pete Hewlett.

  • my mum taped this when i was 10-piano man best song, the longest time a capella also cool, like this but rather think he cheats..kudos to the joel tho...

  • Yeah I was 16 when this was shown on the BBC, taped it but sadly recorded over by accident. My sister was even more gutted. Great concert but even greater memories eh?!

  • fu** i was 2 yrs old at that time but love this and most of billy joel songs thanks billy.................

  • Wow! I'm shocked! He NEVER did the high notes--at least not in this concert back in '84--I got to thinking about this after seeing him in Toronto last week, May 26, 2009, when he rarely tried any songs that challenged his range. He's still amazing, though.

  • Billy Joel did the high parts on the album, but found it difficult to reach them during a live performance - 2 hours plus

  • Makes sense, but I'd still like to have heard him do it once--at least to a NYC crowd on YouTube.

  • Try the version from Tokyo 2006. He hits the highs there.

  • is he still this good in concert, it is rare to find someone who sounds good both on record and live

  • remember this when i was young and my old man played it ,now i am ,tune

  • love this song ,and the album, had my first girlfriend around the time, brings back great memories!

  • Happy Easter Billy Joel

This song helps me from my Childhood to remember the things what I done ? Being Innocent makes me feel good about myself. Cant push anyone to forgive just encourage everyone's spirit.

Your song did changed my eternal life. Iam renewed in Jesus since 1997.

  • Sorry Danny, but Billy is an atheist.

  • Class!

  • i love this sing. its amazing

  • the song which I buys others of his albims

  • This is one of the most romantic songs ever written.

  • Brilliant! Iremember this first time round on telly. thanks for sharing. is it "available" anywhere?

  • Holy cow! he looks young...Great song

  • i aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaammm an innocent prick, i love this song..ty

  • I have been looking for this concert for years. I remember it was shown over 2 nights in 1984 and it introduced me to Billy Joel.

What incredible memories. Thanks for posting this.

  • It was played, about the same time, over 2 nights in Australia too. On a show called "For One Night Only," funnily enough. I taped it then nearly wore it out watching it. Must remember to convert it to digital and post some of it on Youtube.

  • i love this song..

  • This is awesome! Billy you're the man!!

  • God my mam had this concert on video when I was around 9 or 10 years old!!

My favourite song was "Piano Man"...

  • This is my All-Time favourite song because my Dad had the Album......

Ps - .....Meat Loafs Bat out of Hell aswell.....

  • He must have gotten hungry at 3:42. :D

  • do you have any more songs from this concert? i cant get enough of them

  • why doesnt he just hit the high notes himself, i know he could

  • He was still smoking then plus it had been a long tour of about 18 months or so and I think he was struggling with them, but now that he's given up smoking he does them himself now.

  • to rrv1114

He explained after this song that he's too old and can't hit those notes anymore.

I bet this won't attach to the comment I'm replying to. Aargh!

  • yeah it's just too bad...funny that he hits the notes now though

  • George Simms...that guy has one freaky voice.

  • this is why i got into music, cuz of billy joel, the GREATEST. screw the beatles, they couldnt lace billy joel's shoes

  • ...you just made my day. And also, I completely agree with you.

  • Lol dont screw the Beatles, if there were no beatles there would be no billy. They were a major influence in his music in the early days. Listen to "Laura" from the album "Nylon Curtain" and you will hear a clear john lennon influence. Also "A room of our own" from the same album has a spooky Beatles sound to it.

  • @DundeeBhoy2007 I agree, but id always thought that A Room of Our Own was more Bob Dylan influenced.

  • @chrisz31974 they never tried to do his style they had their own style its called variety and there are many great artists out there need to appreciate individual talents

  • @chrisz31974 Billy's great, but the Beatles pretty much did lace his shoes.

  • @chrisz31974

finally. Someone who takes Billy over Beatles. True shi$!!

  • aweseom! thanks! Keep them coming
