I've had more than enough of hearing guys that hide behind the whole "innovative/avante garde" routine as an excuse for just sounding like crap. This got very old, very fast.
I played with Isaac in combo at UCLA around 10 years ago and it is great to hear him again. If you sat in a practice room and jammed acapella like I have you would understand. He is one swinging cat with great respect to Curtis Fuller, G. Bohanon, Freddie Hubbard and many others. He has tons of chops - this Vid is only a sliver of the musical spectrum for Mr. Smith.
This guy should try switching to a smaller bore horn because it sounds like he just doesnt have the chops to be able to handle the horn hes playing on.He should also take some lessons with a well respected trombone player in order to learn how to play without sounding so forced and labored .The lines that he plays sounds very uninsprired and boring.
Dave taylor actually recommended the horn for him. It's probably the most massive straight trombone ever createad, an Edwards/Getzen with a 10.5'' bell.

This guys just playing a bunch of bullshit with no musicality. Just crap coming out of that horn!! Sounds like he needs to work on the basics of getting a good tone and playing with decent ideas instead of just playing bullshit and calling it inovative.
@jazzerjazzer9 you know just because you can't hear what he's hearing doesn't make what he's playing bullshit.....i think he has a good sound.....and of course we all have different opinions but from my perspective I don't think what he is playing is bullshit...i think your'e comment was though
I have to completely disagree with you Glockyla. Isaac has a beautiful individual sound and approach, which is the thing that draws people (musicians and listeners) to jazz in the first place. These are the two most important things in Jazz music. If we don't place importance on these things, then we might as well all play classical music, and go for the SAME textbook good orchestral sound and articulation. By the way, this is Vince Gardner talking.
this trombone player needs to concentrate on the basics such as sound production and playing slow until he can handle the brisker tempos .this guy has a long way to go before he has the chops to even sub for even the subs of the substitutes of the top LA guys.
I wish everyone of the people who wrote bad comments would put up a video of themselves playin cuz im a 100% positive that it wouldnt be better than isaac smith. isaac smith is getting gigs that you cant get and youre gonna say he cant play?? hes been in SF Jazz colletive and slide hmptons world of trombones and you think he cant play?? put a video up and i bet isaac could cut the shit out of you. oh yeah and as far as his sound goes, hes plays a bass trombone. thast what they sound like.
okie some of these comments are uncalled for. Can't yall not here what he's playing. Some of yall need to understand is approach. I've shown alot of jazz instrumentalist that don't play trombone this video, and believe me they give him alot of props. and the funny thing is most trombone players don't like him in general just because they don't like his tone. He has his own sound his own thing as individual. If you don't think he's all that then try playing atleast half the shit he plays.
Great spirit. Power, passion, joy, and most of all real human expression!!! These negative comments are absurd. Everyone now chases a robotic way of playing. Individuality has been crushed. Pretty soon it will be all computer music. Such a shame alot can't see the beauty of this type of player.

agreed. This guy sounds terrible. He's got energy in his playing....but thats about it. For pure virtuosity on the trombone, check out Hal Crook, Jeff Galindo, or Conrad Herwig
Hey name some trombone players that are killing that dont have to eat the Mic to play? Just cuz he doesnt play his doodle heart out doesnt mean he cant play. Ive heard him live plenty of times. Half the problem is acoustics. The other thing I would say is close your mouth until you hear him play over Moments Notice SF Jazz Collective. He kills it. Most of us wish we could play half the stuff he can. Terrible!! haha
