@veggiewarriors Delhi's feet were usually darker not because of the chemical burns, but due to a combination of her foot soaks + some moisturizing / anti-bacterial oils caregivers applied, so the dampness made her skin appear darker on some videos and photos. Her caregiver did note that Delhi's toe nails were actually whiter than any of our other Girls—a rare quality that is sometimes sought after in temple elephants.
@veggiewarriors Those are special padded shoes, made for us initially by TEVA to help with Tina's sore feet, but by the time they were finished, Tina had passed away. So they were tested on Delhi to help cushion her feet. See the October 31, 2005 Asian diary entry on our website for more information and a slide show about this.
@veggiewarriors Frieda suffers from osteomyelitis, too and is currently undergoing treatments, although unfortunately there is no way to reverse the bone loss--we can only try to slow its advancement and provide relief. The Sanctuary has had a few elephants with mild cases that were treated early enough to succeed. (Bunny was a good example) Unfortunately elephants like Tina, Delhi and now Frieda have battled this in more severe cases.
after seeing these heartbreaking vids showing elephants at the end of their lives due to neglect, abuse and preventable disease that ruined their lives, I had an idea. Why not get elephant experts to travel with circuses so the elephants won't get sick like this? circus owners are going to say no because of the expense, but what if it was mandatory and enforced by the government?
It may be decades from materializing, if ever, but since circuses are still legal, these animals need urgent help
osteomyelitis is PAINFUL! If she were treated in time she would have been ok but she was ignored, like all elephants are when they are slaves for the public, for greedy people!
Sweet, wonderful Delhi. She arrived at the Elephant Sanctuary thin and sad, but thanks to the best care from devoted caregivers, Delhi thrived for several years. She gained some weight, became stronger, and really became a member of a wonderful family. God bless the Elephant Sanctuary.
I miss and love Delhi. Shirley and Delhi were both the grandmothers, and to lose one of them is hard for the herd. I am glad that Delhi was able to have a good life at the Elephant Sanctuary. I followed her progress. She gained weight, explored a lor, and became a herd member.
I thank God the Father for places like Elephant Sanctuary. People can be so cruel and unkind to animals, you would lose hope in humanity, but God shows that there are good people in the world. It is truly a teary moment for me to see that this elephant got some joy out of being around people finally. That last trumpet at the end was a big statement from Delhi.
I have been a contributor to the ES for several years. Whenever I am feeling blue and sad, all I have to do is watch these beautiful girls and I get happy! Namaste dear Delhi. You lived and died in paradise, we all should be so lucky.
I got more than teary watching this video and reading the other comments...frankly, I'm balling my eyes out. You folks at TES are quite amazing for all that you do for some obviously intelligent, caring creatures.
Joy has never sounded so good! Blessings to all those who helped to make Delhi's life on earth wonderful, and then allowed her to pass peacefully, surrounded by your everlasting love. ♥
Such a beautiful dedication although I can't help to get teary watching this. Still she had the chance for happiness and more years of life. That wouldn't have been if it hadn't been for the sanctuary. This humbles pets are so priceless even the elephants. I would have loved Delhi and I do all your elephants. I know many will have the chance because of you.
Dear Sweet Delhi, finally free -- I shall always remember you. You are an inspiration to all. Thank God for TES and the love and care they showered upon you. May you trumpet loudly and walk without pain forever in Paradise, dear soul. I love you!
Dehli was blessed with the peace of sanctuary for the remaining years of her life. Now she can go on in eternal peace. I get goosebumps just knowing she felt "free" before she went. That "trumpet of freedom" will always stay with me. I love you Dehli!
Dear Delhi had wonderful last years at the Sanctuary. Her hospice care was so loving and supportive-from her human caregivers and her elephant sisters. She has now joined her sisters who went before.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful, inspiring video footage of Delhi! And when she looks right into the camera, you can see the individual there. It's such a comfort to know that some elephants are living out their years at the Sanctuary. What great work you all do!
Delhi, ou are finally home. You've come a long way; from India to the circus to The Elephant Samctuary. You've meet some loving people and elephants evert step of the way. But now, you beautiful girl, you are finally free.
My heart feels for your loss. The greatest gift we can give our animal friends is happiness in their life if even for a short period. God bless you for all you do.
Delhi's feet are somewhat darker compared to the other elephants? Is this due to the chemical burns she suffered while at Hawthorn?

Boycott circuses!

the govt should have acted sooner, they should have banned animal circuses once they suspected cruelty
ALL animal circuses are cruel
ESPECIALLY Ringling Bros
Boycott circuses please!

Oh, what a triumphant trumpet!
Go and and blow the roof off, Dear Delhi, of that sanctuary in the sky.
You were not born to entertain me, but, oh, how you made me smile. For this, Dear Delhi, I am truly grateful.
PS You were born the same year as my Mother, who has since passed on. There must of have been something special in the air that year.
