While the so-called "Dark Ages" weren't exactly a time of tolerance or freedom, there was quite a bit of scientific progress made during that time.

It's an odd point to make, I know, but for a series that prides itself on historical accuracy and detail as much as Civilization, I wonder how on Earth Sid Meier and co. managed to overlook the fact that travel to Alpha Centauri is impossible, or if feasible only in terms of centuries, not years. Technological advance in Civ stops at the dawn of the 21st century, hell I was building my spaceship in one game before I even discovered computers! But I suppose it IS only fantasy after all...

This is kinda silly, Alpha Centauri (the star system) is just over 4 light years from Earth, so that means it would take a spaceship TRAVELLING AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT 4 YEARS to reach it. Faster-than-light travel is possible, and if my maths is correct the distance from Earth to Alpha Centauri is approx. 630,720,000,000 km (that's 630 TRILLION, 720 BILLION KM.) That's a hell of a long way, and would require well in advance of 21st century technology to pull off. In other words: impossible.

try and focus on buildings, wonders and research that increases science production. also another good tip is to build cities in areas that, even at a low level, can bring in around 6 science (going on number of symbols). If you are going to try this method, be warned, keeping alliances going is the key to winning, becuase odds are you aren't likely to have a very strong military power throughout the game, until you are able to build planes and tanks

yeah it seems on the higher diificulties, the AI start a fight with you every other turn lol, those are useful tips though, do you know what year the game ends in? I always thought it was 2050, which led me to rush a lot of stuff, but I've heard it might be 2150?

Alpha Centauri is the nearest star system. It holds three stars, Alpha centauri alpha and beta are in tight orbit while Alpha Centauri aproxima is the closest star to earth, very dim and far away from the two stars and in a slow orbit.
