I've seen the '08 one and might soon see the original. Anyway, I heard in DR2000, they also killed random people they meet. In '08, pretty much only those in the cars might die. Anyway, violence is good on screen, not in actual reality.

Carmageddon was supposed to be a game based on DR3000 - the sequel, but when it got cancelled, Carmageddon became it's own brand. Death Race 2008 supposed to be a remake of Death Race 2000 (1975). But the newer version

is nothing like the cult classic. Only some of the characters like Machine Gun Joe and Frankenstein are similar.

Death Race 2000 (1975) is a cult classic because of the absurd humor and at the same time being a social comment. The euthanasia scene is an example of a subject that is still an issue today. And for the people who don't understand black humor. This movie is meant to be corny and cartoonlike.

I also liked the the newer version but it lacked the depth the original did have.

Also, Soylent Green (make room, make room!) had to do with overpopulation as well. I can't remember who started it, but it leant itself to lots of popular media such as this film. That subtly got it into society's psyche.

if you mean films should be closer to reality because it enhances the audiances experiance then that might work if you find mainstream films believable; although I love the auteur of obscure directors who don't try to show reality as always having a soundtrack, good lighting, pretty people and constant improbable chance. I like 'funny games' for how the characters question just how real fiction is when you experiance it. it's a question of taste but the fact remains this wasn't meant to be real.
