you must just have bad luck i never have problems with mine i spend twenty dollars a piece on mine though... they have not burn out and I have had them over a year already...
@poiiihy I have 4 GreenLite in use and they are about a year old working as good as Day 1! They seem better than FEIT, which my second set of those seem very good.
It could be a surge from the substation, a slight differential in amperage can fry the ballast on a CFL if the amperage stays below 2 amps the lamps will not die rapidly.
I have CFL bulbs in all the lights in my house and they burnt out with in a few weeks as well. Then i called PSE&G my electrical company and they said it was because my house is 100 years old and has old lighting fixtures like the one in the video. So I replaced the lighting fixtures and the CFL bulbs have lasted for about 6 years
I hate using my iPhone with YouTube, anyway it's suppose to say volts not bolts and at the end it means you can light them up withought connecting wires
We have CFL bulbs installed in our house and none of them have ever failed. They are brighter than incandescent bulbs and use less power. I like to experiment with electricity and happen to find it entertaining to pass 3000 bolts through this bulb (and my hand) and the bulb still doesn't fail. And the fun thing for those who play with electricity, the electromagnetic radiation from high voltages exited the electrons of the gas vapor into going up an energy level, and you know what that means, T
I have CFL's in my house since 2000 and I've only had maybe five quit working within a 3 month period up to now. The brand I use is Verilux sold through "Greenandmore" website. The first 6 pack of this brand seem to fail after aabout 6 months but figured that they could have been a defect from the factory. These were the 16w 60w (simulated) bulbs. The 150w simulated bulbs, real rating at about 33w are still working after about a year and some have been running for over two or three years.
About 2/3 of the CFL's I have bought have failed within a year and about 20% of those I had left failed in the following year. I had one catch fire and another almost catch fire, (and none were on dimmer circuts) I have broken 5-8 of them because they break easier than Incandescents (and I am still alive). My electric bill went up to $120 a month in the winter vs. only $90-$95 when I switched back to the incandescents, (and this year was colder too). CFL's are not better than incandescent!!!!
yah i have had theres bulbs not the ones your using but slimer and thay say it lasts 6 years and thay only last about 2 years another one lasted about 4 years max
All 243 bulbs in my house are cfls and only one has died after 2 years, I use the brand GE and they are by far the best. Try GE and tell me what u think
@thexboxfanboi I use GE as well, they are by far my favorite brand. They are silent, run cool, and the color on them is best in my opinion. Also they come on instantly, and reach full brightness quickly.
they should last a good few years but the problem is china and their amazing build quality makes them die in a week if youre lucky they wont catch fire lol
Question, how does incandescents last? If they last longer, then the comments about wiring aren't valid. Also be real careful about putting these bulbs on a circuit with a dimmer, they can start a fire. Most ppl don't know that Congress banned incandescent light bulbs starting in 2012. 100 watt goes first, then 75 and 60, and finally 40 watt. Let's just say my stockpile is growing nicely. Screw CFL, they are a scam.
My research shows that near 50% of them fail early. And I am right! or maybe not, you got 70% fail. But yeah they are miniature, same tech. They're junk, even some new ones flicker now and than. I took one back to the shop, bastards wouldn't replace it.
I would say it is the wiring. The dimmer for sure on the second light. Measure and make sure you are getting at least 110 volts but no more than 120 volts. Also, the CFL bulbs at discount stores are JUNK! Get the ones at a lighting specialty store. They are the same "brand" but are commercial quality. I have been running some for about 8 years and they still work. My house is totally fluorescent (mostly "old school" preheat) and I would not have incandescent bulbs ever again!
Yes, they are a scam. I just came to that conclusion. Mine did last a few years, but that's a far cry from the time span they are claimed to last. Also I have not noticed any difference in electricity usage. They are expensive, polluting crap. They have mercury in them so when you throw them away they pollute the environment. Way to save the planet, huh?
Funny, I have had one of 9 fail in the last four years. So clearly they don't work for you as your power source is not clean enough to run them and they are ageing way too fast, so no, for you they are not a good choice. If you life where there is good power and clean lines and recent wiring and dimable CLF on those circuits that have dimmers they do last the lifetime average. They are tested in labs. Labs use clean, filtered power from a source. Your MPG is not worth it. Make sense?
That hum and that flickering, plus the fact that they've died with in weeks is normally what happens if they're in a circuit with a dimmer, even if you never dim them, the current is arround 5 times higher and it just cooks the components inside!
Bingo! The light with the hum and flickering is on a dimmer. However, the first light is NOT on a dimmer and they're still dying quickly. Maybe it is the wiring in my house.
@P42STUFF That, and the high surge current when the dimmer triac fires (up to 8A peak per lamp!!!!) will cause pyrotechnic failure of both the lamp and the dimmer.
My family decided to ban every non-enviromentally safe enery user (stove is now electric, Christmas lights are LCDs, etc.). We just bought CFLs not that long ago (5 months, I'm estimating) and we've never had a problem. Must be what company manufacture them (ex. General Electric)
I agree with you. I have the same problem. Now I go to Home Depot every time they break and they replace them. There is a 9 year warranty on them. Now I keep my receipts and I will keep going back to home depot for new ones.
They don't last any friggen 10,000 hours. What crap. The ones that last the longest are the ones outside. That leads me to believe that heat is the downfall of these bulbs. EVERY SINGLE cfl that I have ever replaced has melted plastic around the glass tube where it goes into the base of the bulb assembly. I even had a cfl flood light bult (feit) from Costco, just completely separate in half one day and fall from the ceiling and shatter all over my kitchen floor.

By GE, Philips, Sylvania, or FEIT & make sure you do NOT have them on a dimmer. Date them on install & keep your receipt.

The type of bulb you use in your house is not going to kill any polar bears or save any either.
If you want to do the right thing, go back to incandecent, or, if you want to spend the money, LED's.

I have had horrible experiences with the CFL's from the RONA Brand.
The ones from Globe are some of the best I have used, those ones actually do last 5 years! Try to look for the bigger sized ones.

Buy Branded CFL Lamps only.
Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are tiny yet powerful sources of light that are even more energy efficient than CFLs.
Use more LED light to reduce energy consumption.
