what is the point of the spiked scallops?? are they just for certain frets u prefer bending on because if the whole fret isnt scalloped then part of it will feel normal and part will feel easier to play?? i've honestly never seen spiked scallops before just normal ones like on ur bottom frets..and also what is tung oil mainly used for when it comes to guitars?
That turned out amazing! I was possibly going to post a video next month on working on my DIY guitar, and I was wondering if I could use the spike scallops. (Im getting a neck like that)
4 my 1st time, mine turned out pretty well but i was hoping it would look even the slightest bit like this one....guess ill wait till im older and can learn stuff(13 Y.O.A.) :P
@DUY1337GUITAR whats the whole point then, wouldnt it feel uncomfortable. i was gona have mine scalloped on the fact that increased sustain cause thats what i was told, for the last 4 frets scalloped as you cant get as much sustain out of them compared to other sections of the fret board anyways
Scalloped frets on the smaller frets allow you to grip the strings easier, so it makes it more convenient to bend. Instead of having your finger right on top of the string and pulling it up the fretboard, you actually push the string upward right from its side. You probably heard they get more sustain because they do ring longer when you bend them at the high frets, but scalloped frets does not mean longer sustain. It allows for effective bending and vibratos.
@DUY1337GUITAR that does make much sence. high fret notes normally dont ring that long so compared to normal i suppose u do end up with a little more sustain. thanks mate
I got a lot of useful tips from this video. Im not crazy about the kinda half scalloping but i can understand that you didnt wanna mess up that cool inlay. Thanks a lot for all the help. Good video.
Like your ax! I am currently scalloping my strat neck and was curious if the lemon oil would work on a maple neck as well? It sure worked well for the rosewood (im assuming that is rosewood) Cool vid and some nice product as well. have a good one!
when you have scalloped frets, you don't feel wood under your fingers when you play. Gives you more control over your strings. Makes certain things easier. And it can help improve your speed. A lot of shred guitarists like scalloped frets. go check out Yngwie Malmsteen. He scallops all his guitars.
Alright dude, I'll say this now, you are the one who's senseless. I see your comments sometimes in related videos and they are just abusive words from a sadistic and egotistical whimbag. Sometimes I can agree with you, but everytime, you just seem like a low-life douchebag.
And you, sir need to learn grammar and spelling. Don't mean to be a grammar but the word "dats" and the awkward structure of your sentence cause instant migraines.
I don't sell guitars, this project was only for fun and learning about things I love. This can take a lot of time depending on experience. I just did things bit by bit while working on school, so I did this over a long period of time. I'm waiting for christmas to come and my birthday (new years) so I can get more money and buy pickups and electronic components. The cost of making one is a lot, but buying a "saga LP guitar kit" on ebay is a good idea. Has everything except finishing supplies
Those are just estimates, there's also $100 I spent on other stuff for the guitar, too. Buying a saga LP kit to build would be a lot cheaper because it comes with all of the parts, including hardware.
that is amazing work, looks amazing, must feel great, coz tbh on the thinner frets its harder to hold the strings so that would be a genious idea, you sell guitars such as this?
@emrextreme lol, scallops shouldent effect the sound. at all.
these ones arnt realy noticable, but most scalloping is for the feel, when you pust down the string, you dont touch the fretboard. also makes for better bending AFAIK.
yep, you're right. Scalloping gives the same effect as having jumbo frets too. My scallops doesn't really add anything since I use 11-50 gauge strings

Why did you choose to scallop your fretboard? Was it just due to aesthetic purposes or does it improve playing in any way? Awezome work by the way.

Fuckin awesome job on the guitar

If you don't want a varnish on rosewood, then you wouldn't want tung oil on the frets. But I do use lemon oil to hydrate the fretboard.
DUY1337GUITAR 1 year ago
Would that just ruin the inlays I need a few scalloped frets but I'm worried about the inlays being ruined

how much did you spend on this?

The body: $115
Neck: $100
Tremolo: $140
Finishing supplies: $180
New Hardware: $100
Those are just estimates, there's also $100 I spent on other stuff for the guitar, too. Buying a saga LP kit to build would be a lot cheaper because it comes with all of the parts, including hardware.

The preference in feel and change in action depending on the adjustments. Vibratos can go deeper with thinner strings, too, by pressing it.
