Why can't Square-Enix let gamers have their fun with making their own fan-made versions of Chrono Trigger? What are they afraid of? Do they really think people will try to make a profit from it? To basically restate what everyone has said, nowhere in copyright law does it explicitly state that intellectual property can be used for non profit projects; also they could have sued for using the same music (copyright infringement dipshits)

Lol this is not pirating. The guy has remade the game into a sequel, and he's not profiting from it. It's LEGALLY covered under fair use laws as long as he doesn't try to sell it, he gives credit to the original creators for their work, AND he releases the game only as a patch and NOT a .smc file.
Search youtube for "mario hack" or "metroid hack" or something, you will see there are hundreds of quality remade versions of both those games.
Um, no. You clearly have no legal experience and are speaking purely out of ignorance. I'll start off by saying that I'm an IP attorney who has been practicing for 7 years. Square-Enix owns all IP related to Chrono Trigger... the folks who made this hack don't own any of it, nor is it in the public domain. SE wants to control how their IP is being used. When kids hack a game and release it, especially in such a way that causes brand confusion, this is indeed illegal.
Also, there is a difference between promotion and diluting IP. If someone made a Chrono Trigger fan page with art ripped from the game, it helps promote the game, and there's no confusion as to whether or not SE had involvement with this project. SE has no reason to try and shut this down. However with a game hack, it can be unclear to some as to whether or not this was a sanctioned SE product. Thus it dilutes the IP.
SE, like every other company out there, wants to protect its brand identity and IP. So to those complaining about this, why don't you stop complaining and try making your own game? Is it because you're so terribly uncreative and unoriginal that you can't? Well, then don't complain that someone who actually took the time to "create" something doesn't want you just ripping their work and using it how you please. Hate to break it to you, but the law is on their side, not your's.

Apparently you know nothing about intellectual property law. There are other forms of IP use that are illegal beyond whether or not you make money off of it... For example, if you use material in such a way that misrepresents or dilutes the original IP, you can indeed be sued. There are a lot of hacks that are illegal, but the company has no interest going after them because it's not worth their time. There was probably some reason they chose to go after this one in particular.

It's a fan-based project, and there's tons of clones online who use tons of final fantasy and other Square/Enix (they should never have been together in the first place) characters, maps, mods, etc. yet this one gets taken down just because people actually like it and want to play it.
I think even a big munny grubbing company would own it to itself to respect the wishes of so many of it's fans, and at the very least come up with a sequel of it's own, if they so hate the idea that the fans start to help themselfes. While there are legal problems distrubuting ROMs and such, I am more than just sympathetic. It's a *fan* production for crying out loud. It's free advertising and *such* an honor to the company and people who created the original. You would thing they have a heart.
Much as I dislike the implications of the C&D and the loss of this fantastic project (download Temporal Flux ASAP folks, to preserve a copy of it), I can't argue with them really. Unlike other fan projects such as the Chrono Trigger Novel project, Crimson Echos and projects like it modify what is, in actuality, the direct property of Square Enix, the code behind the game, not to mention its music, graphics, dialog, etc.

This is a 13yr-old game which they JUST RE-RELEASED, which we ought to be thankful for (means that there's a chance of making more games in the series). CT Resurrection's being stopped made perfect sense in the light that SE was reviving the title, since Resurrection would've been released for free and would've been playable by those who had never once bought Chrono Trigger itself (this was possible for Crimson Echos here only through piracy). Shame that they killed CE, but I *can* understand it

awesomeseven u need to download :1)a Snes emulator 2)the Lunar IPS program and the two demos from chrono compedium(crimson echoes section).You also need to have the original snes Chrono Trigger rom.(just google all these,easy to find).the demos are IPS patches so u have to use the lunar IPS to patch the demo(i recommend the second one) on the original chrono trigger rom.after u've done these just load the rom on the emu and enjoy :D

Oh, by Chrono Compendium. Yeah--they just add things to the storyline--they use hacks, kind of, and they edit the story from what is in the game to make more sense of it. Magus' run was pretty cool. You should check it out, they recently made a retranslated version that is as close to the Japanese version as possible, it's great.

3. File a police report that your hard drive was stolen with the gold version of the game on it.
4. Put out a statement that the leaked gold version is stolen property.

well ever since they went squareenix they got more copyrightable than ever when they were squaresoft they said and i quote "we allow fan versions of chrono trigger and any other game we have release" cause i was gonna make one and a sent a letter back before they went enix...

from a criminal justice grad student, this is not stealing. as long as the person (s) who are making this "mod" (and im sure they do) own this game it is completely legal as long as they do no sell their "mod" for profit. (and as long as the people who receive the "mod" own the original game also. the reason why SE was able to shut down this project is because they proved that a majority of people who would get this would not own it and therefore got it shut down.

Everyone should chill. Dosn't matter too much if it's legal or not, me and my friends pirate tons of things and havn't been arrested. If you wave a CD in front of a cop and say "HEY! WANT A WINDOWS VISTA BOOTLEG" there will be problems.

Lol this is not pirating. The guy has remade the game into a sequel, and he's not profiting from it. It's LEGALLY covered under fair use laws as long as he doesn't try to sell it, he gives credit to the original creators for their work, AND he releases the game only as a patch and NOT a .smc file.
Search youtube for "mario hack" or "metroid hack" or something, you will see there are hundreds of quality remade versions of both those games.

Um, no. You clearly have no legal experience and are speaking purely out of ignorance. I'll start off by saying that I'm an IP attorney who has been practicing for 7 years. Square-Enix owns all IP related to Chrono Trigger... the folks who made this hack don't own any of it, nor is it in the public domain. SE wants to control how their IP is being used. When kids hack a game and release it, especially in such a way that causes brand confusion, this is indeed illegal.

Also, there is a difference between promotion and diluting IP. If someone made a Chrono Trigger fan page with art ripped from the game, it helps promote the game, and there's no confusion as to whether or not SE had involvement with this project. SE has no reason to try and shut this down. However with a game hack, it can be unclear to some as to whether or not this was a sanctioned SE product. Thus it dilutes the IP.

SE, like every other company out there, wants to protect its brand identity and IP. So to those complaining about this, why don't you stop complaining and try making your own game? Is it because you're so terribly uncreative and unoriginal that you can't? Apparently you know nothing about intellectual property law. There are other forms of IP use that are illegal beyond whether or not you make money off of it... For example, if you use material in such a way that misrepresents or dilutes the original IP, you can indeed be sued. There are a lot of hacks that are illegal, but the company has no interest going after them because it's not worth their time. There was probably some reason they chose to go after this one in particular.

At the end of the day, when you try to make a project out of something that wasn't your's to begin with, you always run the risk of running into legal battles with whoever owns that IP. If I were them, I wouldn't want a bunch of dumb fankids diluting my IP either... It's a fan-based project, and there's tons of clones online who use tons of final fantasy and other Square/Enix (they should never have been together in the first place) characters, maps, mods, etc. yet this one gets taken down just because people actually like it and want to play it.

I think even a big munny grubbing company would own it to itself to respect the wishes of so many of it's fans, and at the very least come up with a sequel of it's own, if they so hate the idea that the fans start to help themselfes. While there are legal problems distrubuting ROMs and such, I am more than just sympathetic. It's a *fan* production for crying out loud. It's free advertising and *such* an honor to the company and people who created the original. You would thing they have a heart.

Much as I dislike the implications of the C&D and the loss of this fantastic project (download Temporal Flux ASAP folks, to preserve a copy of it), I can't argue with them really. Unlike other fan projects such as the Chrono Trigger Novel project, Crimson Echos and projects like it modify what is, in actuality, the direct property of Square Enix, the code behind the game, not to mention its music, graphics, dialog, etc.
But then I'm made to wonder... is fanfiction TERRIBLY different from this?

This is a 13yr-old game which they JUST RE-RELEASED, which we ought to be thankful for (means that there's a chance of making more games in the series). CT Resurrection's being stopped made perfect sense in the light that SE was reviving the title, since Resurrection would've been released for free and would've been playable by those who had never once bought Chrono Trigger itself (this was possible for Crimson Echos here only through piracy). Shame that they killed CE, but I *can* understand it

awesomeseven u need to download :1)a Snes emulator 2)the Lunar IPS program and the two demos from chrono compedium(crimson echoes section).You also need to have the original snes Chrono Trigger rom.(just google all these,easy to find).the demos are IPS patches so u have to use the lunar IPS to patch the demo(i recommend the second one) on the original chrono trigger rom.after u've done these just load the rom on the emu and enjoy :D

Oh, by Chrono Compendium. Yeah--they just add things to the storyline--they use hacks, kind of, and they edit the story from what is in the game to make more sense of it. Magus' run was pretty cool. You should check it out, they recently made a retranslated version that is as close to the Japanese version as possible, it's great.
