I don't understand the humor in the exaggerations. Hair standing straight up, shower water pinning him against the wall. Why is that funny? I dunno, I never thought physical visual humor was funny either. Just silly really, the sort of thing people do to amuse chidren. He seemed to always be holding back some hostility. I was moved by his recitation on suicide.
AND NOT A WORD about what kind of person he was. Just a bunch of slobbering all over his talent.... I'm sure people like this are the reason he offed himself in the first place... He fought for this kind of attention his whole life, and once he finally got it, it probably made him feel a whole new kind of alienation and self loathing.
I want to slap this woman. "Pants-wettingly funny"? YEA RIGHT. DFW is not pants-wettingly funny. I hate applauders. I hate people who just have to make it their purpose in life to go around applauding the great works of talented people. Is that really a legitimate purpose? To applaud?
@shestolemyboxers Why exactly is a group of devoted scholars taking time out of their day to honor a deceased, immensely talented author pathetic? If by pathetic, you refer to the original meaning, i.e. appealing to emotions, then I would agree. But I am certain you are being pejorative. It's easy to sit behind a computer screen and be cynical and sardonic (the very pseudo-intellectual sort of tone DFW was fundamentally against, I believe), while genuine people are putting themselves out there.
@shestolemyboxers Completely agree with you. I love David Foster Wallace. But exactly who are these people? And who is in the audience? Why does she constantly say "DFW" as if she were orally tweeting? But I applaud this woman's passion for "DFW". I'd rather people spend time like this than delude themselves into thinking they are talented singers with cover versions of 'Teenage Dream' and 'California Gurls'.
Why would Wallace turn over in his grave? I found this link after Federer talked about him. Ironically she has me wanting to learn more about Wallace, while you may be right--I just don't know enough about him.
This woman's Australian accent is sooooooo annoying!
