This is a great documentary. Well paced, great music clips, well narrated. I saw it on Channel 4 (UK) back in 1988. It's really interesting to now watch the first performance where Art talks about his band.
@rickstolk : Thanks ain't enough for what seeing and hearing this means to me. I've been into Art's sound since my mom turned me on to him in '68. I was 11, had just begun playing alto, playing it still. Never stop learning. I loved your music Art Pepper - it's helped me through bad times, made better times the best. Music, playing and listening, keeps me sane(r). So glad you're playing Art. Music is Life. And you are a giant. The Riverside stuff is daily fare - this new rocks! Peace man
I saw Art play twice in the UK . He was one of the finest..up there with Phil Woods & Jackie McLean. It's funny how every young generation thinks it was the 1st to discover drugs & sex.
Most kids today think Rappers and guys like Pete Docherty invented heroin. 1950s Jazz musicians looked clean in their suits & ties but they lived a hard life...PLUS they had REAL talent.
Anyone who is the slightest bit interested in jazz and it's history MUST watch this. Why so few views? Art Pepper would have been placed at the very pinnacle if it weren't for Charlie Parker.
Have a look, young folks. This was a part of a culture of expression and angst and sincerity that underpins the one you are experiencing today. Are you a pioneer?
love the musics.. :)

It's very moving to watch him listen to "Our Song" (from "Winter Moon") (at 42 minutes). It's such a beautiful recording. What an exceptional artist.

Kids today should realise this.
