TE AMOOOOOOOO STREISAND , Greeting from Mexico. Im 30 years and I satarted admiring her since I was 15, but this song is new for me, I LOVE HER NO FAMOUSE MUSIC, jejej
this is one of my fav songs she dose, i actually love her songs that did not become here stellar hit's, and yes i understand Lennon fans trashing it because your Lennon fans but please know she would have never sang the song with out his approval, and he loved her take on it, artiest respect each other i just wish fans of faf artiest would respect other artiest who cover there songs.
Oh dear. Having heard BS (?) version of this classic at last I must say... NO! The original is turned into some bollocks hybrid of Broadway and soul. None of John's raw emotion remains here at all. In other words...shite!
Well I thought that I knew her, I mean, her career but , well, I'm 29 and now each week I'm discovering a new beautiful song performed by her. In my country we only know about The Way We Were, My Man and that's it,
@HNC52 I agree with your comment! Don't like anything Barbara did as she is too nasally for my liking, but she really did nail this song! I like Lennon's version also, but Babs is ahead by a couple of points!
I am not a huge Streisand fan, but I have always felt that she really nailed this. I am sure her complicated relationship with her own mother, and her father dying when she was a kid, helped her to deliver this "spot on" performance.
Why is it that when a rock artist crosses over to pop they're being kitche & fun, but when a pop artist dares to dip their toe into a somewhat pretencious genre they get slatted for their attempts??
Like this rendition or loathe it, at the very least it shows courage & a willingness to try something new.
Killer keyboards from the great, late Billy Preston on this song. My hats off to Ms.Streisand for attempting this very moving song. A spectacular production from Richard Perry, too. Thank you!
You may have a point, but I think that music sounds much better on CD compared to records. With CDs, you'll always have the clear sound, and it won't deteriorate ever.
I'm not a big Streisand fan but you can't help love this cut as I have since the day it came out. Beautiful and powerful production with wonderful, classic Hammond B3 organ & Lezlie speakers.
I am so tired of Streisand playing with my emotions. Her rendtions of songs are always either painful, joyful, soulful, spiritual or just plain funny. My mother and I had one of the most cantancous, love/hate, full blown emotional draining mother/child relationship. I never measured up despite being the most successful of her children. I spent my life trying to please her & never could. I buried her more than 5 yrs ago and not a day goes by that I dont miss her, scream at her, thank her.
This was a huge #1 hit in South Africa in 1972. I think SA was the only country where it was a big radio hit, since I can't find the song in the USA or UK charts.
This song is one of the most memorable and chilling ... ever ...
I tuned into the BBC one morning in Hillcrest. KZN to have the news interrupted and the announcer stating: "John Lennon has just been shot" ... a moment of silence and Barbara delivered this heart-wrenching tribute ...
I still tear up every time I hear it ... and love Barbara for this rendition.
a huge fan of Streisand , I love this song written by John Lennon . Barbra does an xtremely fantastic , beautiful version of this and I want to thank her , personally ! so , " THANKYOU , BARBRA for doing this " .

Won't you give now? Please make your check out to 'Worst Cover Ever'. Please help children with perfect hearing. John isn't rolling over ... he is hysterical!
Im always amazed when she sings this since her voice is genious. I can her her making tones rounder or softer in the middle of a note, I can hear her working. No vocal acrabatics in the pop ingenue age of wow me. I'm wowed by the sheer intensity and ease with which the lyrics lay her hands. The last single notes rising into the upper register give Aretha a run for her money we rarely hear her like this. she usually goes into a self conscious whine but here she belts freely.
1) Please see my first note. I never said that "Mother" is my favourite song, but the album is my favourite.
2) I get the Picasso reference, but Van Gogh was a copy-cat at best. Humble opinion (as always). :-/
3) Lennon was a great artist, but he did not have the best voice. He'd have been thrilled that Barbra (and others) liked his music enough to sing it and keep it alive. To suggest otherwise would mean he was doing it only for the money.
@jimblackwood If there is one thing I agree with the conservatives is that Streisand is nauseating. Imagine Weird al Yankovic singing this song? This version is a parody of a great artist.
@wovokanarchy There are many others, of course, who would consider Streisand by far the greater artist than Lennon (despite her awkward attempts to do 'rock').
In vocal quality alone she is in another stratosphere.
@eldiran2 That's the most absurd and moronic statement I've read in a very long time. Streisand doesn't even write her own music and material so how can you consider her a true artist? She's a cabaret performer at best. "A greater artist than Lennon"... what bollocks. That's like saying Liberace was a greater painist than Glenn Gould.
@wovokanarchy That's the most absurd and moronic statement I've read in a long time. Britney Spears writes her own music, too.....doesn't make her an 'artist' of any caliber. What I refered to was the Vocal Quality of Lennon (which was never highly regarded) And, excuse me, but calling someone of Streisand's talents a cabaret singer shows a profound lack of musical appreciation. Perhaps you are simply unfamiliar with her real work (not the pop stuff). In any case, you're allowed your opinion.
@eldiran2 Excuse me?? Lennon never highly regarded as a vocalist?? Wow.. He was ´only´ number 5 in the Rolling Stones top 100 vocalists of all time! It was his voice that made songs like Please Please Me, I want to hold your hand, This Boy, Happiness is a warm gun, him harmonizing with McCartney that created several of the best harmonies in pop and rock history..I respect Streisand, but to say that ´many others would consider her the greater artist´..that´s quite absurd.
@tdeb79 Good point, but you must understand that Rolling Stone only ever refers to 'Rock' artists (which are known and appreciated for many things, great vocals usually not being one of them)....Could Lennnon EVER be considered a better vocalist than Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzerald, Billy Holiday, etc etc. Surely not. Not in any universe.
Im not really into the who's better than who debates, because picking out what one famous list says apparently means it is set in concrete, but considering what Streisand has achieved, not just in music, but in all other aspects of Entertainment, I think you need to realise this, something which John never did in his short but amazing career.
@wovokanarchy You are WRONG!! Barbra has written some of her music. In fact she wrote and sang a number one hit in EVERGREEN and went on to win an OSCAR for that song! Get your facts straight!
A little overproduced imo but not bad - I remember when it came out and we 10th graders were quite impressed. Christina Aguilera's version on Amnesty's Save Darfur CD is very similar, which is a compliment to Barbra.
I've always loved John Lennon's version of "Mother" because he sang it so scarifyingly that it was real. Not to slight Barbra Streisand; her version is very good and faithful. But I would really like to see Sinead O'Connor do this song. Considering her powerful voice and her own troubled childhood, she would be absolutely stunning covering this classic.

Johm, though (lets be honest) did not have much of a voice. Though I agree with many that Streisand's 'rock period' (her attempt to be contemporary after a decade of singing old standards)was one of her weakest. Still..there's that Voice! She blows John away...
Except that he never had clean notes.....He was not gifted with a very good voice. McCartney had a better one but seemed to lack the soul (or Lost Soul, as many would say) that John had.
amen to the 30 years, Fresh vinyl on a dual or pioneer tt with a new stylus over klh headphones and a little herb. Too bad Roy Orbison did not cover this. Maybe Cris Isaac will, Christina Aguilera took a shot at it and it is worth a listen but her voice sounds small, I never cared for the John Lennon original. Thank goodness BS did not try it. Thanks so much for loading this , I too had not heard it since the winter of "72" The album was not available for a long time.
