Say what you like about Capcom now, they LOVED the Saturn and Dreamcast back in the day. My hat goes off to them releasing wild cards like this in Europe.
And don't forget, for those 2-D fighters to run smoothly on the Saturn, you had to have the 4mb ram cart. The Saturn was simply a failure. Face it. Playstation killed the Saturn. Sega impressed me with the Dreamcast with 2-D and 3-D excellence with Shenmue, D2, Resident Evil Code Veronica, Jet Set Radio, Soul Calibur, New Japan Pro Wrestling 4, Virtua Fighter 3TB, Power Stone, Crazy Taxi, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Capcom vs. SNK 2, Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, Vampire Chronicle, Dead Or Alive 2.
@luvindogadis411: The Street fight Alpha series, Night warriors, and all mega man games didn't need the ram cart to run smoothly. But the others games needed the cart not only for graphics, but for the game play as well, which is why most PS1 2d fighters had horrible game play. Capcom hated PS1 when it came to 2d. You couldn't even play marvel vs Capcom on the horrible PS1.
@Imadeyourun That is why I said the Saturn ruled 2-D. And I am referring to more animation heavy 2-D fighting games like "X-Men vs. Street Fighter", "Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter" and "Samurai Shodown IV". I think "Vampire Savior" used the 4mb ram cart as well. The first "Darkstalkers" aka "Vampire" turned out decent on the Playstation though. The animation for "X-Men: Children Of The Atom" for Saturn was terrible compared to "Marvel Super Heroes" running with the ram cart.
@luvindogadis411: Darkstalkers only looked decent on PS1 if you didn't have the arcade or Saturn version to compare it to. And you said that X-men vs Street fighters animation was terrible?!?! Did you even play the game? And the reason Sega even made a ram cart is because at the time that the Saturn was released, DDR ram was extremely expensive, as were CD drives. So they wanted to cut the ram and have an option later to add more when needed. Some the Sony failed to do and Capcom took notice.
@Imadeyourun Please read my posts carefully. I did not say that "X-Men vs. Street Fighter" had horrible animation. By the way, I still own the Japanese Saturn version thank you. I SAID THAT "X-MEN: CHILDREN OF THE ATOM" had horrible animation compared to "Marvel Super Heroes" running with the 4mb ram cart. And "Darkstalkers" was never released on the Saturn. Only the sequel "Night Warriors" aka "Vampire Hunter" was so we can not compare a PS1 version with a Saturn version of the first game. :)
@luvindogadis411: Sorry, I wasn't concentrating when I read that, I had a very tiring day. And anyway, X-men children of the atom on Saturn didn't have horrible animation, it just didn't have every frame that the arcade did, but still, it had a shitload more animation then the PS1 version did. The thing is, even with more ram the PS1 couldn't have gotten a perfect port of any of those Capcom classics. And Capcom themselves said that.
This game is one of the reason that made the Saturn superior to the Playstation. 99% arcade perfect with perfect sound, perfect game play, and near perfect frame rate. This game sold me on the Saturn. Play Darkstalkers or Darkstalkers 3 for Playstation then play this for Saturn and you'll see exactly what I mean about the difference in quality
No gaming era is as good as the 90's and this bring me back to those glory days, wow memories of being a child.. by the way this game was the fuckn shit. Dark stalkers, street fighter alpha 1, Xmen children of the atom, Marvel super heros, Tekken 2, Killer Instinct, Virtua Fighter and so many more my goodness the 90's was the best if i can bring those days back i would.
@luvindogadis411 Not to mention did the Saturn have a better pad, it also had more memory, and a more complex set of CPUs. Some say it was harder to program for, but in the right hands, it could blow the playstation out of the water.
@luvindogadis411 Actually, the Saturn had better 3d capabilities that the PS1, it was just to damn hard to work the double processors. PS1 Could never have done Virtua fighter 2. And in order for the PS1 3d fighter to even look less pixilated, they had to go with 2D backdrops.
@Imadeyourun I am well aware of the 3-D "capabilities" that the Sega Saturn had but it was never really implemented too well with the exception of Virtua Fighter 2 and Sega Rally. Fighting Vipers and Fighters Megamix looked terrible. Compare the PS1 version of Battle Arena Toshinden to the Saturn version. Mortal Kombat 4 came off pretty well on PS1 with its 3-D backgrounds. Tobal 2 was phenominal on PS1. Games like Warhawk and Twisted Metal really shined. 2-D was where the Saturn ruled. Period.
@luvindogadis411: Obviously you haven't played many games on the Saturn. All those Toshinden games looked like crap when compared to Vitura fighter and Fighting Vipers. And Tobal was nice, but it used all of the systems power to generate smooth character graphics, sacrificing the backdrops. The bottom line is that the Saturn had superior 2D and 3D capabilities than the PS1. It was just the matter of developers not being skilled enough to make use of the dual processors.
@Imadeyourun Obviously, you don't know me. I not only owned most of the American Saturn games; I also imported many games from Japan like "X-Men vs. Street Fighter", "Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter", "Vampire Hunter", "Vampire Savior", "Cyberbots", "Street ighter Zero 3", "Samurai Shodown Collection", "The King Of Fighters Collection" and many more. I am not talking about "Tobal 1". I am talking about the Japan only "Tobal 2" with its lifelike animation. Fighting Vipers looked terrible.
@Imadeyourun Soul Edge put Fighting Vipers to shame. The Saturn was too hard to develop for that is why companies like "Single Trac" (Twisted Metal, Warhawk) and others developed for the Playstation. I was an avid Saturn fan, but the Playstation was too much for it. When the Madden games went 3-D, the Saturn versions were blocky as hell. You call that superior 3-D technology? And with the original Resident Evil game, the polygnal characters looked extremely terrible on Saturn. Saturn ruled 2-D!
@Imadeyourun Now, I tip my hat to Sega for the phenomenal "Panzer Dragoon II: Zwei" and "Panzer Dragoon Saga". Those 2 games were no doubt fantastic. As far as Virtua Fighter 2, I wish they would have had the bridge on the one background stage like the arcade version has. Sega Rally was good too. The first Daytona USA looked terrible with all the "literal" pop-up backgrounds. That game was rushed. I think I remember some of the 3D0 games coming to the Saturn as well; like Space Hulk.
@luvindogadis411: Yeah, Daytona USA was kinda rushed and could have been better if the developers were better at using the dual processors. The fact is, all of the earlier games used only one processor. The bottom line is, if developers had giving the Saturn a chance and weren't so spoiled by the PS1's ease of development, we would have seen amazing things from the Saturn.
@luvindogadis411: Nope, I haven't forgotten about that at all. The graphics were nothing when compared to game like Virtua fighter2, Fighting, Vipers, and Dead or Alive on Saturn. with fight vipers have destructible backgrounds. But soul Edge was one of the best on ps1.
Nice video. I was wondering if this game requires the Ram expansion cart to play on the Sega Saturn like some of the other capcom fighters. Thank you for your time.
well, the experience with CDs in console was new...
and in fact, i dont know what we have to do to improve the sound yet since the CDs we can have the best quality in sounds...
well, the only thing is the raiseing tax of capacity with DVD, BLUE RAY... and I cannot see too many differences between a fight game like that and the figth game we see nowadays but the 3d...(sorry my english, im brazilian)
no wonder capcom loved saturn, it was supreme at 2d graphics (as playstation best atsounds, transparency and movie sequence) , and when the cartridge to enlarge its 2d power came, it was long the state of the art for 2d beat em ups. At least in nippon. sob sob.
