  • What Kazahkstan needs to worry about is the disappearance of the Aral Sea. Because of intensive cotton cultivation, the rivers that feed the sea, are being reduced to a trickle. An economic alternative needs to be found for cotton, which requires a lot of water. Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan were the cotton gins of the Soviet Union. Now that they are independent countries they have the liberty to find alternatives. The fisheries of the Aral Sea have practically disappeared.
