Yes, you are right, it is a bit harder to get work with ati,but not impossible. I have another 3d desktop running with an ati card on my laptop. In this case search for beryl, xgl, fglrx, ati and your distri and you will find also good howtos/wikis.
Do your system lagging without using 3d desktop enabled, or what your mean ?
My 3d desktop on my laptop running pretty good with ati x1400 and stable too.
Search for "gentoo howto xgl toubleshooting" maybe your problem is described there.
no, it's only lagging when I put beryl on.
so you think that I should remplace my debain by a gentoo ?

Maybe there is something other wrong with your config.
I would not say that it is debian fault. A friend of my have a running beryl on
Kubuntu which works fine and with a good performance also.

yes, but I have a good configuration:
pentium 4 3.2ghz in dual core like (Hyper threading)
1 Gb of RAM
and a ATI X600 Pro 256mb graphic card.
and it's lagging horrible. I don't even think to use it more than 10 minutes: the computers frizzes.
I believe it's ATI who have very bad drivers for linux.
My next computer will have a Nvidia card !!!
don't use ATI !!!
