The crowd's not dead- they're into the music. You don't have to flop around like a dying chicken to be "into it." You can hear cheering in the crowd all the time- but it's soft because it's not mic'd or anything. Plus, it's Letterman. It's not exactly the venue for supa-hype.

Come on, guys. This isn't an arena venue. I see people my age there; I'm in my 50s and am a great Coldplay fan. It's a small theater and a little more sedate than the crowd you'd get at a stadium. I prefer it. I'd go to watch them in this kind of setting rather than at a stadium.

The audience is there to see a taping of David Letterman and happened to be able to watch Coldplay- so no, not all of them may know who Coldplay even is.
