1. You play through a section of the game the developer wants you to play

2. The ask you too fill out tons of paperwork about your experience

3. You wait for them to change or modify the game

Game testing is about shooting at a wall for an hour until a bug appears, and then you spend the next hour writing a report.

It's not a bad job, but it's definitely on the bottom of the food chain in the video game industry, it's not something anybody should ever want to compete in a reality show for, not unless they have the qualifications, anyway, in which case they should just write a resume.

I think testers at different companies are treated and paid very differently. Saying testing is the lowest position you can have at a game company isn't true. Many people have made a career out of it and make six figure salaries with yearly bonuses, stock, and fantastic benefits. Being a software engineer, whether in test or development, pays well if you have a company that values what test engineers bring to the table.

Testing isn't "playing video games all day", it's like ... hey, this door doesn't open sometimes. Spend the day opening the door from various angles, carrying different weapons and with different active power-ups, then write a report to designers and programmers who hate your guts explaining exactly how they can reproduce the bug. Then collect your tiny paycheck and see if you can squeeze six hours of sleep in before work tomorrow, while your friends forget what you look like. Woot! Testing!

And these testers need to realize how important it is to knock out as many kinks as possible for the developers to realize how important their product is. But to say "the balance is screwed here" is an ignorant statement as you have no idea how many gamers; female and male alike are out there.
