  • This isn't Cat Stevens but it doesn't quite sound like McTell either...

  • cat stevens has never recorded this as a single let alone a 12'' single,i suggest that you get a new record player, this is not the original recording of 1975 which made no 2 in the uk charts but a later version,a brilliant brilliant song thanks for posting

  • Just to all the ones who try to make it the cat stevens version: stevens has a much more nasal voice, ralph mctell sings from his lungs and has a deep large voice just like here. So as a matter of fact this is mctell.

  • Hey this is not a Cat Steves verson. Wrong!!

    It is by Ralph McTell.!!!

  • Comment removed

  • This is cat version...

  • i was crying. i hate it.. nobody deserves something like this..

  • @AggroBerlinPoop AGREED. Beautiful song. Bad, bad pictures. Doesn't fit.

  • Schöne Bilder

  • I'm with Aggro - a amazing lack of understanding about the meaning of this song. My God!

  • whoever made this video is an idiot. most unfittig pictures for this song

  • Who can tell me where can i get this music video. kiemhong03@yahoo.com

  • I will add my humble voice to the others.

This is NOT Cat Stevens, as anyone who has ever actually heard Cat Stevens sing will of course know.

It is the fine English folksinger Ralph McTell.

  • I love this song. Even Though I wasn't born until years after this song was produced. I always remember anytime I complained about something silly my dad would play this song. This song has real meaning

  • Wunderschön!

  • being a child of the 60's I can say with certainty that this is Ralph and NOT CAT STEVENS!!!

  • Das erkennt doch der Blödeste beim ersten Ton, daß der Interpret nicht Cat Stevens ist, sondern das dieses Lied von Ralph Mc Tell gesungen wird. Welcher Vogel will uns dermaßen verarschen? Nicht mit mir!

  • that's not cat

  • Cat Stevens ? Not (AGAIN) Amend please !

  • It's Ralph McTell, It is not Cat Stevens. I know it's been said before but it needs to be said again and again and again. It's not Cat Stevens.

  • This isn't Cat Stevens. Best regards

    Eric

  • Brillant great poet of our time, check my Makem songs out, cheers Ther Makem Folk Singer

  • cat Stevens - schade xD

  • It would be great if Cat had sung it though

  • This has been chopped rather badly & for some reason the last verse is missing why do people bother to upload an edited version?( by the way Skyhawkct this is not a rare vesion this got to number 2 in the charts in 1974!) and as many other people have said this is NOT CAT STEVENS it is RALPH McTELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • it could be changed to streets of britain ,.now poverty is so rife,,even middle classes are suffering now ,,,RIP GREAT BRITAIN

  • @honkydudeman Unfortunately this applies to all "well-off" cities. The world has been devided.

  • Why state the bleeding obvious , its Ralph

  • its Ralph Fucking McTell! change it!

  • Of course it's Ralph...and this version with the harp and background singers is rather rare.

  • not only is it ralph mctell...i HATE when people make videos to songs and have images flashing up to resemble every flippin word! very annoyin

  • @docco20 U R sooooo right! People sometimes think they have free reign to place THEIR favourite photos with someone else music.

  • just uploaded my first attempt at a cover of this song, not sure if everyone will like it, but please please have a little listen, would be much appreciated! :) x

  • Das ist doch Ralph McTell. Cat singt viel schlechter :D

  • Are some people deaf or something? this version here is ralph Mctell singing.

  • I mean Mohamed has a silly voice in this moment. Perhaps has Mr. Islam never sang this thing but who nows

  • This is a lovely song, but this is definately not Cat Stevens, I grew up listening to and loving his music, he has a very distinct voice. Thanks anyway.

  • and this is ralph /watch?v=UDT1sx1yePM&feature=related

  • this is cat

  • @erikvanzanen

    NO WAY!

This is RALPH MCTELL - himself !!!!

So change the title - PLEASSSEEEE - or get someone to help you do it LOL

  • If thats Cat Stevens then I'm Justin Trousersnake :)

  • Tutto le strade del mondo...

  • I would love to hear the cat sing this.

  • sounds more like Ralph ...?

  • Yes its defo Ralph, with Rod Clements [ Lindisfarne ] on bass and Prelude on heavenly harmonys [ no cats appear on this recording ].

  • Sounds even better by Ralph Mcstevens.

  • @HORACECOPE2

I get the impression that this was meant to be a joke about the ex singer who we used to like while he was a cat.

  • Someone is either totally tone deaf or has no idea. Cat 'kin Stevens my arse!!

  • i like it .(=

  • bogas

  • yussaf mctell! lol

  • Doh, what a let down! So ready for hearing Cat Stevens singing this!

  • lol that ain't Cat

  • Cat McTell lol

  • I've always loved Cat McTell. I even love his 'Cat's in the Cradle' pretending to be Harry Chapin.

I suppose it's because we blame him for everything since he bacame a muslim.

Cat, Ralph, I love you anyway, any name!!

(but he did write and sing First Cut is the Deepest)!!

  • Ralph McTell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • hahahaha, thats really cat stevens :))

    voices are totally different...

  • how does anyone think that this is lightfoot or cat stevens? really?

  • kinda strange, that after more than three years of discussion, people still won't accept the fact that this is ralph mctell's original version. no cover by cat steven, not gordon lightfood, but mctell himself. my old folks still have the actual single record.

  • Mc Tell forever in the Streets of London!!! Das ist niemals Cat Stevens oder Yusuf Islam! Egal - der Song ist einmalig! GREAT

  • Listen Radio Música para Mimos. The best songs of love. (search in Google)

  • the picture are TOTALLY WRONG for the song.

    it is NOT a travelogue!

  • @55archduke I agree....TOTALLY.

  • he isnt Cat Stevens!

  • wrong singer, wrong decade, wrong pics

  • GREAT

  • @zoollie000 who gives a crap?

  • @BrokenneckYgor That's slightly embarrassing...I noticed that when I posted an uncontroversial comment about Islam on the thread for another video, my post would not be posted until it "got approval" (or something to that effect)...I couldn't imagine why, so I figured that "Muslims" must have been the keyword that tripped off the censor.

Those comments were an experiment by me to see what words set off the "alarm"...I deleted them as soon as I posted them but apparently there was a glitch.

  • Comment removed

  • @zoollie000 OK

  • You are a star ............I stand corrected

  • Ralph McTell

  • this is not cat- but ralph mctell!

  • i agree ralph!

  • ralph mctell wrote the song and singing it here

  • ace!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great Video with Ralph McTell. I like Ralph McTell's voice. He does this song the best in my opinion. I love London have been many many times since my first visit in June of 1970. I had just turned 18 years old when I took that trip. Thank you London and Londoners for wonderful memories.

  • 6 idiots -.-***

  • Ralph wrote this song - and recorded it first; however, he probably, unconsciously, "pinched" the tune from Al Stewart.

  • @musik102 Interesting, if its a paticular song your refering i would like to hear it, actually the first part of the tune crops up in a number of songs, listen to Meet me on the corner by Lindisfarne ( Rod Clements plays bass on that as well as streets of london ).

  • Ralph McTell did not write this song ..................It was Rodger Whittacker who wrote it and first performed it ..........Listen to both they are brill and will never fade away

  • @shirlie34 Sorry but you are wrong Mctell wrote this in 1974 after visiting Paris and witnessing poverty on the streets there, to avoid offending the French he composed this song about London streets and the characters on them.

It reached #2 in 1974 and was rumoured to be selling almost 100,000 copies per day at one point.

  • @ibanezguitarman .I stand corrected and thank you ........

  • @ibanezguitarman Agree Mctell wrote it but he first recorded it in 1970, for...i think, the album of the same name. He eventually recorded the single version in 1974.

  • Ummm just so you know that's not Cat Stevens that's Gordon Lightfoot.

  • Probably would sound good if cat had sang it :)

  • Ralph McTell...vollidiot!

  • It is both funny and sad.

The guy who uploaded this also probably never heard Cat Stevens sing. Or Ralph McTell for that matter.

I used to play this song in cafés when I had my guitar with me; over and over again. Everyone just likes this song.

And by the way: this is NOT god, nor anybody else but the one person who wrote this song, and that is Ralph McTell. The one and only.

Suggestion: try to find "Hesitation Blues" from Ralph. Nice. Very nice indeed.

  • Ralph McTell Ralph McTell Ralph McTell Ralph McTell Ralph McTell

Ralph McTell Ralph McTell Ralph McTell Ralph McTell Ralph McTell Ralph McTell Ralph McTell Ralph McTell Ralph McTell Ralph McTell Ralph McTell Ralph McTell Ralph McTell Ralph McTell Ralph McTell

  • my hearts freeze, hear that song, nice like it

  • its crazy and i love that<3

  • It's Ralph McTell. I am from Mexico, biut I lived in Cambrdge, England. and I know both of them. They are great, but in this case it is not Cat Steven's voces, he is Ralph McTell.

  • I wonder why people mistake certain songs for Cat Stevens. Just like it pisses me off when I mention Cat Stevens and some dumbass says oh yeah thats the guy that did cats in the cradle. Wrong you idiot. Harry Chapin did Cats in the Cradle.

  • Its Ralph Mc Tell !!!!

    xDDDD

  • IF he is Cat Stevens. ???

  • don't argue, it's ralphs but this cover is cat a.k.a. yussuf

  • @vjeranst

No way ! LOL - this is Ralph !

  • OK, I admit I was wrong in claiming this is Cat Stevens. Nobody's perfect, not even your's truly. There is no doubt this song BELONGS to its author, the great Ralph McTell.

(But I bet the Cat COULD do a great version of this song).

  • I'm not sure how many comments are needed, but i'll join in... it's not cat, its Ralph :P

  • @DaveIsParamount you're right and neither is the third picture made in London .. it is Montmatre in Paris with Sacre Coeur in the background .. but it's still a great song!

  • @DaveIsParamount You're right - definitely NOT Cat Stevens, and also not Gordon Lightfoot. My bet is an older Ralph McTell.

  • @DaveIsParamount are you sure? I know that McTell wrote the song, but I belive that this version is actually made by Cat Stevens! I have this exact version on a CD, where they (universial studios) claim that it's Cat Stevens singing it...

  • @ceagl

Then someone at US has screwed up big time, or someone has cheated you and sold you a fake CD ;-)

Cat has never sung this song - at least not in public or on records! ;-)

I know most of what R. has released, and this is definitely him!

I can recognise his voice anywhere ( deeper today though).

This is the 1975 version that went to no. 2 in England and earned him a prestigious award.

There are a couple of earlier versions with only guitar and song btw. - from 68-69.

  • @Bjowolf2 well I'll be damned :P thanks for the enlightenment!

  • cat did single it m8 and ralhp but cat stevens did the best

  • This isn't Cat..this is, as everyone has said ..Ralph Mc tell

  • It's Ralp McTell, the mp3's around the web has the wrong name for the artist. If you never have heard Cat Steven's music you should check it out. PS if this voice should be mistaken for anybody it wouldn't suprised me if it was Mark Knopfler.

  • that´s ralph mc tell .

never heard cat stevens sing ? feel sorry for you ..

  • It is a Ralph McTell song but it doesn't sound like Cat Stevens singing it. Lots of other people covered this song

  • Not Cat Stevens

  • Over two hundred artists have made covers of this song

And I've got fifty bucks that says Cat Stevens did the BEST VERSION EVER.

  • @Justraycarroll when do I get my 50 bucks :P

  • Cat Stevens... You mean Ralph McTell !

  • Well my daughter is a friend of Cat Stevens's son, and I will ask her to find out if this is the real deal.

I am a Cat Stevens fan since Matthew & Son, and I say this is THE CAT singing Streets of London.

  • @Justraycarroll Cat Stevens!... You definitely don't know your Streets of London, It's DEFINITELY Ralph McTell.

  • Voice is too deep for C.S.. GOOD PICTURES, though... not CAT !!!

  • Well,i guess ... epic fail :'D

That's everything but Cat Stevens :D

    McTell ftw!

  • This is not Cat Stevens. I searched Google and even looked in his site. He has not sung it. It doesn't say anywhere that he has.

Please post a video of him singing it if you have one!

  • it is Ralph Mc tell !!!

  • Cat Stevens never sing this song.Is Ralph McTell.I'm sure.

  • Good ol Ralph ! Who is this guy Stevens ?

  • streets of london by cat stevens dont think so ???? sounds lot like Mc Tell.........

  • It's not Cat Stevens!! It's Ralph McTell.

  • At 0:10 has Sacré Coeur in Paris re-erected in London?

  • @johanwinston

Sure, the picture is Sacré Coeur in Paris. Now that our football team is disbanded, at least leave us our monuments (they never disapoint us)!!!

    Richard (from Paris)

  • @LaFeclaz You should appoint Zidane as the next captaine. Then you'd regain lost glory!

  • i like cat stevens but this is mctell

  • That is not cat stevens, listen to moonshadow, totally different voice all together.

  • Somebody posted a "Streets of London,by Cat Stevens" on limewire, and it kinda lived its own life from there :D

I am sure Cat and Ralph see the fun in this mix-up,so should we ;)

  • oy, that's Ralph McTell singing. I know his voice just as I know my own name. somebody must have made a mistake listing it as Cat Stevens. lol.

  • lol that is Ralph McTell

  • lol that is Ralph McTell

  • lol that is Ralph McTell

  • No, that's not Cat.

    It's certainly McTell.

    Anyhow, it's a good song.

  • look it up on wikipedia people, this isn't cat stevens... Cat Stevens doesn't even sound like that!

  • that isnt cat stevesn and the pictures are shit they got nothing to do with the meaning of this song

  • Cat Stevens.. where did this come from - he's never even sung this song... ????? Sorry guys, I've been singing this song in my gig repetoire since mid 70's.... I know this song backwards and have heard Ralph McTell sing this many times.. This is the original recording of Streets Of London by its composer ....... Ralph Mc Tell.... !!!!!!!!

  • Grabbing for clicks or why do you write Cat Stevens in the title? It´s not him.

  • to nasefoll... I gave him the £2 i had on me - but didn't take the magazine.

  • I'm sure i saw God this morning - he was selling the 'Big Issue' outside Buchanan Street bus station in Glasgow - i'm sure it was him. He smiled at me in the distance. i know it was him , I mean - why would it not be him...?

  • @port75 did u buy 1?

  • Yes, this is Ralph McTell.

  • Ralph McTell ... never ever Cat Stevens, pls get an ear for music

  • fake !!!

  • This is Ralph with the only version that matters

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • this is Ralph. Im just the one million per cent sure.

  • Someone's obviously at the bollocks - it's definitely Ralph McTell. It's only different because he's playing this version with the capo on the 2nd fret rather than the 4th. This really is a song, and I don't mind a bit of Paris thrown in for good measure, same problems there! That's Samuel Beckett at 2:32.

  • isn't cat stevens.very beautiful song.

  • Sounds an awful lot like Ralph McTell..... It is NOT Cat Stevens voice! Still a beautiful song... God Help us when we don;t help those in need... But for the Grace of God.......

  • Son, it'd be bloody hard to change something as classic as "streets of London" and try to make it your own.

It's well done and that is good enough for me.

  • Melanie also sings this song.

  • All of you are wrong. That's GOD singing. Better listen and better help the needy.

  • God is in the singing business now?

  • I know this is Ralph McTell and not Cat Stephens. I am a fan of both. Thanks for posting though. This is my favorite Ralph McTell song.
