The piece is primarily in 4/4 + 5/4 - there's a few short sections where it goes to 3, primarily for transitional purposes, but the bulk of the piece is in 4+5. The majority of the chart itself alternates between bars of 4/4 and 5/4. The trumpet solo in the middle has a very brief section in 4, but that's about the only time you see anything in 4 that's extended. The ending (the last 28 or so bars) is all in 5.
We played this in high school jazz...very difficult. As someone said, it is mostly in 9/4 though I seem to recall the chart was written with alternating measures of 4/4 and 5/4 which made it that much more confusing. Don Ellis was a freakin' genius.
My middle school jazz band played this... easily the toughest chart I've ever played on trombone. I got the solo and it was interesting to play around with different aspects of soloing, such as soloing in 5/4 time and playing with the chord changes
What is the time on this? Time is the new frontier in the evolution of jazz music post Coltrane. it seems we have explored ptiches throughly. We need to explore rhythm more now.
Thank you

Great to hear. Now I'm going to have to upload my old video of our championship marching band playing this on the field in 1978! Great memories.

Great playing! This was the 1st tune on the "Live at Fillmore" album, & Glenn Ferris played an absolutely insane 'bone solo!!!
