I'm 17 and I'm definitely nostalgic about my childhood already. I think it has to do with the fact that when I got to middle school I basically stopped spending time outside with friends due to homework. It only worsened as I grew up and now I do homework almost every weekend for most of the day because of advanced courses. Kids today have so much pressure on them. They grow up too fast. And now, parents are getting their 7 year old's brand name clothes, cell phones, and ipads. WTH?
A lot of these problems started in the mid-late 90's when the adults decided that noone should ever be offended and hence political-correctness rose up. Man, it was annoying hearing parents on TV complain about the shows that was played back then and how kids under 12 needed to be 'protected'. Those kids are now in college and are still tied with their parents helicopter them.
Not only do kids in High School miss their childhood, they are starting to obsess over decades they weren't even alive in (probably because there seemed to be a sense of innocence back then that has been lost).
Sometimes I think my generation,I was born in 82,and maybe the generation after mine were the last ones in which kids were allowed to be kids, and enjoy that period of their lives.Nowadays, parents, and society, put a lot of pressure on kids. They have to grow up and mature too early. There aren't girls and boys anymore, there's little women and men. They get lost and miss their short childhood. I mean,I miss mine, but I'm 27. And when I was a 12 year-old girl,I was actually a girl, not a mini-woman.
This is probably because the internet has fragment people taste in things like movies, music etc. Nostalgia is one of the few ways this generation connects to a common culture.
I grew up in the 90's and I have to say that things seemed so much cooler back then, I don't exactly know what it was about those years, The internet was never a main focus in our lives and most days we would spend outside with our friends and neighbors, we were completely innocent, playing Mario. Having 'real' fun! Nowadays people live differently, and kids don't come out to the park, they sit talking to strangers on MSN, we never had that when I was young. and it was better. I feel nostalgic.
I would say that a big part of it is marketing. It seems like everything is being remade or reissued these days. It applies to music, movies, video games, even fashion. Originality is too expensive I guess.
