@rxs2011 I've just found the answer. There were side airbags in this test car from 1998. Check the link in the description.
"Side impact: The seat-mounted side airbag provided padding for the driver's chest and abdomen. Protection for his chest and abdomen was adequate and for his pelvis, good. His head lightly struck the central door pillar and seat belt loop. The door pillar trim cover contained energy-absorbing padding which should help to protect the head if the contact was more severe."
at 0:29 my cousin died like that but the damage was harder and it was a 2003 model and he crashed like that side doors in a concrete lamp on his side =(
the Golf 4 my friend drove lost his front right wheel because of a hole in the road at 100~110km/h and ended up on the other side of the road some 100 metres inside a field, wrecked to pieces from spinning side to side but he escaped out of the car with minor injuries, because he had his seat-belt on ONLY. The airbags on the passenger seat next to the driver opened up both front and on the side but on the drivers side they didn't. WEAR YOUR SEAT-BELTS! don't rely on the airbags only..
It freaks me out how slow these impacts really are. I dont consider 64km/h fast at all, well maybe now I do. And if it was head on with another car that was doing a similar speed.......I wonder if my bike is still in the shed?!!!
@JENSDONT i know right? they should stick with airconditioning heated seats and some other vw standard stuff not all the high-tech stuff, vw dubs r people cars not gadget cars
@JENSDONT You can still buy them (not new of course) . I just bought a ten year old Golf MK IV GTI 25th anniversary edition in a very good condition. Runs like a charm.
i have the golf v and recently it save me from a crash :)

The VW Golf 4 does actually have side airbags placed in the front seats. They did not pop out, did they?

@oe98b07 originally, no. they were made standard a couple years later.

An airbag's almost useless if you don't wear a seat belt.
