  • amazing bass player, but man, his bass is quite rattly, its a surprise actually. Extra low action for me now, lol.

  • ´Thank you Paul-Jones, Grea showing.

  • Master class from a true master!

  • Even without a friggin amp he sounds good!!!! I would love to see a few artists do it unplugged like that. It could be comical!

  • Best bass player ever!!!, from the biggest band ever!!!

  • all in glorious 240p!

  • un genio totallllll L T

  • GENIUS BEFORE OUR EYES.

  • It was'nt until I changed over to bass after drumming for 20 plus yrs did realize who really was the driving force in Zep, After focusing my attention on Bonham for 20 yrs it was like hearing them again for the first time when I began my journey on bass,It made me see them in a whole new light and appreciate them so much more,MAN what a supergroup they were, bands like that DONT EVER come around anymore, and if by chance it does again happen they fastly lose what got them there to begin with.

  • good player; i like his voice; nice j-bass too

  • what is the song at 0:40????

  • @aromedinax NOBODY'S FAULT BUT MINE, a led zeppelin song

  • saw you play as the New Yardbyrds in Schenectady ,N.Y. in a giant bowling alley called the Aerodrome in the 60's ......as a young musician I thought you were the only one in the band worth his salt<:O).....and still, in spite of all the band's amazing accomplishments, I believe that to be the case...your fretless work on "in my time of dying" is nothing short of stupendous, in spite of or because your "cheating" with the tuning and pull-offs.

  • awesome bout the whole lotta love bass line, i always thought when i played it, it sounded no where near as awesome as the original, be a bit closer now:D ha. great musician! come on TCV!!!

  • One of the best. Releived to see him reference a song then play something different. A man after my own heart. I never knew the names of the songs either. You hum it mate, I'll play it

  • Yeah the hidden wonder of Zep right here

  • That folks is what made Zeppelin the best band on the planet!!!

  • would be nice if the video was a bit better quality...show jonesy some respect and use a decent camera to film his playing

  • I can't believe this is the master JPJ of LedZeppelin. These guys commanded the respect of the world when their sounds were pumping through the airwaves in the 60's and 70's . Such different times and music, it was so good while it lasted. Thanks for the music JPJ!!!

  • 2:50 JPJ has a Mr Bean moment !

    XD

  • aside from his ability I'm really struck by how GOOD he looks...he's easily in his mid 60s

  • I met him in Montreux in 1975. He came up to me asking if I was a musician. He had a tweed suit and a baby girl in his arms. I said no, are you? He said yes we have a band and we play covers and rythm&blues. I asked:Oh yes, what is the name of your band...never felt so stupid.

  • Hey, JPJ doesn't use his left had pinky finger or is he just so fast? I;m a beginning bass player and been having trouble holding notes with left pinky. Can someone offer input....is it just as well to shift left hand w/o pinky? Thanks

  • @kenwilliamsvoice Use the pinky whenever you can . JPJ may have a bad habit, but just because it works for him doesn't mean you should. Eric Clapton doesn't use pinky a lot when he bends either.

  • @crackmunch Hey, thanks for that input. I think I'll continue to learn bass in traditional manner, maybe later find my own comfortable shortcuts like JPJ lol. Your input really helped. Rock n!

  • @crackmunch

    Seconded, use your pinky!

  • Doesn't he make it look easy? What a great musician.

  • hardly ever hear Jones make a mistake ever . I have heard him play alembics that i hated the sound of but he still is spot on everytime but not like a robot . He has more soul than any white Englishman ought to have lol

  • @RisingSon011 As a ginger englishman, jones and homme are doing me well on the 'soul' front in TCV :P

  • The greatest bass player of all time; a true musician. every note he plays on bass is right on the money.

  • Plug the man in!

  • I Buy A Bass Just For Him, I´m Sorry Jimmy Page But John Paul Jones Teaching How Play The Bass In Youtube

  • I think the interviewer doesn't know what he is talking about haha

  • Amen to this. In bass, taste rules.

  • kneel

  • im not worthy!!! i would neal at that mans feet and beg for the honor of speaking with him.....

  • He's a genius, I was just a keyboard player and I picked up the bass just to be like him but I also loved the sound of the bass because of him!!!!!

  • wow that surprised me! that he played dazed and confussed ,way up there, tone i suppose

  • I love what he says about NOT playing. Pauses. Leaving gaps and silence. So important in funk, and reggae, but also rock n roll. It gives groove, adds dance-ability. Genius!

    He's very funny too. :)

  • He had the funk, too!

Man, to be able to jam with Bonham, that woulda been sweeeet.

  • This is awesome! Hangin' out with John Paul Jones! Man, he's good. And great to hear his THINKING about how he makes the bass lines. His stuff is genius. I remember learning that "Ramble On" bass line. Quite hard and wandery. Beautiful. Very different from a normal bass line, the way it weaves around. MAN, he was fast!

It is SOOO great to see him STRUGGLE with how fast that bit is! Haha! I used to KILL myself to trying to play along with the chorus to Ramble On! :) Haha!

  • Nice couch.

  • MASTER¡¡¡¡

  • JPJ lesson

    1) Be a genius.

    2) Team up with the best rock drummer ever.

    3) ????

    4) Profit

  • @PutItAway101 Second best*

  • wow... 1/2 hr of JPJ taking bass. Most excellent!

I assume vid quality is due to the format it was recorded on, but who cares really?

  • a great musician but they should have plugged his bass into an amp.

  • I was talking about how happy I was about finding a lesson from JPJ... LOL John Paul Jones is alive and kicking... I hope he contacts me . If I my e-mail out here I'll get a bezillian. I can imagian Mr. Baldwin's mail. LOL. But ther must be a way... LOL...

  • I almost cried! That was my idol! John Paul Jones! Led Zeppelin!!

  • JPJ is an original master. He's so understated and that's why he doesn't get the credit he deserves.

  • @tommyrock69 Yes indeed! I hope he reads our e-mails!

  • There is so much bass in Zepp then ppl know its crazy!! I have never seen JPJ up this close. Was a cheat!! Thanx)

  • 11:30 to 11:51..........I woulda paid to hear that advice

  • I know he's amazing and one of the best bassists ever, but he makes a few mistakes here and thats what I love about this video haha makes me feel better to know that even someone like him makes mistakes :P

  • I love it how some of the most ignorant people will hate on bass players who use picks when some of the greatest bassists of all time used them as well. Just don't over use them. Make your music have alot of variety. Thats the key to being a great bassist.

  • @jgall100

nicely put my bass playing friend. . i find people who diss bass players for using a pic are weak minded and have limited knowledge of how to get varied sounds out of the same instrument,

im a fingers player.... but i play in classic rock bands and i use a pick.... in order to sound as close to the record as possible.

narrow minded people are everywhere. lol

  • What's the song at 3:46

  • what a hardass

  • Some people judge pick bassists and finger bassists to be completely different, Proper bassists like JPJ will just say that it's about the style of music you've been asked to play or in his case to make better. As a drummer, this guy is my dream bassist to jam with, his understanding of music is just unparalleled. Amazing!

  • @JamesStorey09 he plays both pick and fingerstyle I thought (?)

  • @mcblahflooper94 Yeah, he does which is kind of my point lol, that he.... plays to suit the music better ! :D But the style i prefer would be finger playing/slap lol.

  • Wanted to press 'like' after every two minutes watching this

  • I have always loved that bass line.Right here is the coolest 6:01 To be able to just listen to him talk bass and see what or how he thinks.John P.Jones is a living legend. Page said he try's not to think about how big Led Zep really was and it looks like J.P.J is like J.P. Because he acts like an everyday average guy. But he is not. He is such a great influence to I don't know how many players all around the world. And the fact that he's a cool down to earth guy just makes it that much better

  • I love how he starts playing Ramble On when he's talking about What Is And What Should Never Be

  • JOHN PAUL JONES >>> AALLL

  • people seem to like them...

  • kind of reminds be of myself. freaky.

  • Jonzie is just so great!!! He would have done well with or without Led Zeppelin.

  • @sa65cn1 "Jonzie is just so great!!! He would have done well with or without Led Zeppelin."

Absolutely, though not so rich. :)

  • all this octaves and harmonics talk is blowing my fucking mind.

  • True HD right here.

  • "ramble on" is so easy to play!

  • they should have used high def video interviewing this amazing legend! John Paul Jones giving bass lessons for crying out loud!!! HE DESERVES BETTER with that crap of a camera your using!!!

  • he looks like he can't be arsed with this interview

  • @redskin133

    what do you mean?

    honest question.

  • Should have been getting more blowjobs than he was, saying that, he probably did!!!! He is just a walking legend!!!!

  • Who the hell dislike this amazing video?

  • Legendary is right!!!!!!

  • Couldn't they afford a decent camera & an amp? I'm poverty stricken (relatively speaking) but I have 4 in the house! Playing bass guitar on your own is a drag but playing bass on your own without an amp sucks ass.

  • i loove the black dog bit :))

  • Now I can say that I took some bass lesson with John Paul Jones!

  • JPJ admitting that part of ramble on was hard made my day.

  • When JPJ admitted that part of "Ramble On" was hard that totally made my day.

  • god.. i'm an atheist, but this makes me think twice..

  • John Paul Jones, the God of the Bass Guitar, the greatest there ever was. Bow down before the awsomeness that is John Paul Jones.

  • First video without any dislikes I have seen.

  • best Rock bass player...period

  • Cool to see JPJ do slide guitar intro to "Nobody's Fault"- still not Jimmy, ...but as close in playing style to JP as I've ever heard.

"cept JP used a Danelectro... lol!

JPJ is the quintissential rock bassist.

  • Is there better quality video?

  • Nice video...but Jones deserve a better video quality :I

  • that's "ramble on" not "what is and what should never be"

  • GENIUS

  • Rock music is thankful for this great player!

  • 0 dislikes thats how amazing zeppelin was and how well john paul jones is respected!

  • thanx a million.love JPJ

  • who hear just wants to hear a good rock and roll talented bass player? and hates slapping and popping crap?

  • is it me or does he confuses 'ramble on' with 'what is and what should never be'?

  • what does JPJ mean when talking about whole lotta love?

  • @buryfc2010 hes playing open E and the 7th fret on the A string simultaneously. the same for open D and 5th fret on the A string.

  • @rahulrata cheers i understood what he meant about using the octaves i just couldnt see what frett

  • @buryfc2010 learn theory and ear training.

  • @buryfc2010: Don't know if this was repeated here yet and I was surprised JPJ didn't think offer it but waaaay the hell back in '70 or so, I read an interview with JPJ in which he advised 'Don't try to make good music on a bad instrument - nuthin' will frustrate a beginner more than to try learning on junk'. It was one of the best pieces of advice I'd ever heard. Once I got rid of my new 'Sears' guitar and got a good used Fender...all the difference.Thanx for that (and Zep!) JPJ. A good bloke !

  • @ironman5454

    true true true....

sure you do not need a 2,000 MArtin or Taylor, but if you have some piece o crap that will NOT tune up and has action as long as the Brooklyn Bridge you have no chance of enjoyment or pleasure.

  • @MrISatai he has been a music teacher.

  • thank you god in heaven for Led Zeppelin....

  • I thought it was funny how he said "What is and What Should Never Be" then he started playing Ramble On.

  • This should be one of the highest watched videos on youtube.

  • the best bass player that is still living!

  • Kiss those whiskers left and right!

  • Can any body explain to me what he's doing when talking about the Whole Lotta Love?

  • uhmm... He said what is and should never be but it was ramble on lol.

  • @LedStripez Really stupid comment, hope you got child age.

  • *bows*

  • great quality ...

  • God that whole lotta love percussive sound is sooooo awesome.....

  • The man is quite simply a genius, however I do love when you see such genius forget his own basslines, it makes me feel better about myself !

  • @richymoore

yeah 40 years later... amazing he remembers his name :)

  • Funny, he doesn't remember which song he played his "melodic" line in. He said "What is and What Should Never Be". It was from "Ramble On".

  • new strings?

  • is that the cowboys from hell intro @ 00:17 - 00:22 !!!! hahaha

  • Great interview. Thoughtful and intelligent questions received thoughtful and intelligent answers.

  • VIVA JOHN PAUL JONES !

  • Great interview. Fascinating to see him play bass lines to some of the Zep classics.

Btw, aren't the members of Zeppelin a little too decent and thoughtful to have sold their souls to Satan? I am always impressed with how gracious they are.

Does anyone know if Page has done a lesson type interview like this?

  • Is he playing his '62 Jazz? Oh God!!!!!

  • Favorite bassist of all time.

  • How can anyone deny that he made Zep what it was. True Bonham was a beast, Page was an axe shredder, and Plant could sing like nobody's business, but this man held them all together.

  • Ahh...reminds me of being JP Jones in a good Zep Tribute back in the 90s. Fun gigs! Playing Zep bass is all about feel. You cant study sheet music or take lessons. You gotta just feel it.

  • the most underrated musician of all time.

  • @remington6789 agreed he was a well educated and talented musician.

  • @remington6789 Not at all. If you actually know music, he is a genius.

  • @remington6789

I have to agree with you 100% on that !!!

  • @remington6789 fuck you ignorant idiot

  • @remington6789 i disagree, people acknowledge that he is good and recognize that he was an important factor to led zeppelins sound.

  • @remington6789 fuck you! if you know anything about music, you'll know jonesy is the best thing out there..even after 40 years.. and still counting.. who gives a shit about mtv's ratings? they're gonna pick justin beiber and because of that youre gonna call jonesy underrated?

  • @remington6789 He is absolutely not underrated. He's not always the first person that comes to people's mind, but once you mention him people quickly agree he's amazing. That doesn't qualify as underrated in my opinion.

  • @BeaversVideoStuff

Fully agreed! JPJ is anything but under rated. Among the most influential and referred to players of all R&R time.

If Jones is underrated, so is Freddy Mercury.

  • @gtrrobster Excellent comparasion. Agreed!

  • I wish this camera dident blow monkey balls

  • "Nobody's Fault But Mine"

  • what's the first song at the beginning when he's playing on that thing?
