It was'nt until I changed over to bass after drumming for 20 plus yrs did realize who really was the driving force in Zep, After focusing my attention on Bonham for 20 yrs it was like hearing them again for the first time when I began my journey on bass,It made me see them in a whole new light and appreciate them so much more,MAN what a supergroup they were, bands like that DONT EVER come around anymore, and if by chance it does again happen they fastly lose what got them there to begin with.
saw you play as the New Yardbyrds in Schenectady ,N.Y. in a giant bowling alley called the Aerodrome in the 60's ......as a young musician I thought you were the only one in the band worth his salt<:O).....and still, in spite of all the band's amazing accomplishments, I believe that to be the case...your fretless work on "in my time of dying" is nothing short of stupendous, in spite of or because your "cheating" with the tuning and pull-offs.
awesome bout the whole lotta love bass line, i always thought when i played it, it sounded no where near as awesome as the original, be a bit closer now:D ha. great musician! come on TCV!!!
One of the best. Releived to see him reference a song then play something different. A man after my own heart. I never knew the names of the songs either. You hum it mate, I'll play it
I can't believe this is the master JPJ of LedZeppelin. These guys commanded the respect of the world when their sounds were pumping through the airwaves in the 60's and 70's . Such different times and music, it was so good while it lasted. Thanks for the music JPJ!!!
I met him in Montreux in 1975. He came up to me asking if I was a musician. He had a tweed suit and a baby girl in his arms. I said no, are you? He said yes we have a band and we play covers and rythm&blues. I asked:Oh yes, what is the name of your band...never felt so stupid.
Hey, JPJ doesn't use his left had pinky finger or is he just so fast? I;m a beginning bass player and been having trouble holding notes with left pinky. Can someone offer input....is it just as well to shift left hand w/o pinky? Thanks
@kenwilliamsvoice Use the pinky whenever you can . JPJ may have a bad habit, but just because it works for him doesn't mean you should. Eric Clapton doesn't use pinky a lot when he bends either.
@crackmunch Hey, thanks for that input. I think I'll continue to learn bass in traditional manner, maybe later find my own comfortable shortcuts like JPJ lol. Your input really helped. Rock n!
hardly ever hear Jones make a mistake ever . I have heard him play alembics that i hated the sound of but he still is spot on everytime but not like a robot . He has more soul than any white Englishman ought to have lol
I love what he says about NOT playing. Pauses. Leaving gaps and silence. So important in funk, and reggae, but also rock n roll. It gives groove, adds dance-ability. Genius!
This is awesome! Hangin' out with John Paul Jones! Man, he's good. And great to hear his THINKING about how he makes the bass lines. His stuff is genius. I remember learning that "Ramble On" bass line. Quite hard and wandery. Beautiful. Very different from a normal bass line, the way it weaves around. MAN, he was fast!
It is SOOO great to see him STRUGGLE with how fast that bit is! Haha! I used to KILL myself to trying to play along with the chorus to Ramble On! :) Haha!
I was talking about how happy I was about finding a lesson from JPJ... LOL John Paul Jones is alive and kicking... I hope he contacts me . If I my e-mail out here I'll get a bezillian. I can imagian Mr. Baldwin's mail. LOL. But ther must be a way... LOL...
I know he's amazing and one of the best bassists ever, but he makes a few mistakes here and thats what I love about this video haha makes me feel better to know that even someone like him makes mistakes :P
I love it how some of the most ignorant people will hate on bass players who use picks when some of the greatest bassists of all time used them as well. Just don't over use them. Make your music have alot of variety. Thats the key to being a great bassist.
nicely put my bass playing friend. . i find people who diss bass players for using a pic are weak minded and have limited knowledge of how to get varied sounds out of the same instrument,
im a fingers player.... but i play in classic rock bands and i use a pick.... in order to sound as close to the record as possible.
Some people judge pick bassists and finger bassists to be completely different, Proper bassists like JPJ will just say that it's about the style of music you've been asked to play or in his case to make better. As a drummer, this guy is my dream bassist to jam with, his understanding of music is just unparalleled. Amazing!
@mcblahflooper94 Yeah, he does which is kind of my point lol, that he.... plays to suit the music better ! :D But the style i prefer would be finger playing/slap lol.
I have always loved that bass line.Right here is the coolest 6:01 To be able to just listen to him talk bass and see what or how he thinks.John P.Jones is a living legend. Page said he try's not to think about how big Led Zep really was and it looks like J.P.J is like J.P. Because he acts like an everyday average guy. But he is not. He is such a great influence to I don't know how many players all around the world. And the fact that he's a cool down to earth guy just makes it that much better
they should have used high def video interviewing this amazing legend! John Paul Jones giving bass lessons for crying out loud!!! HE DESERVES BETTER with that crap of a camera your using!!!
Couldn't they afford a decent camera & an amp? I'm poverty stricken (relatively speaking) but I have 4 in the house! Playing bass guitar on your own is a drag but playing bass on your own without an amp sucks ass.
@buryfc2010: Don't know if this was repeated here yet and I was surprised JPJ didn't think offer it but waaaay the hell back in '70 or so, I read an interview with JPJ in which he advised 'Don't try to make good music on a bad instrument - nuthin' will frustrate a beginner more than to try learning on junk'. It was one of the best pieces of advice I'd ever heard. Once I got rid of my new 'Sears' guitar and got a good used Fender...all the difference.Thanx for that (and Zep!) JPJ. A good bloke !
sure you do not need a 2,000 MArtin or Taylor, but if you have some piece o crap that will NOT tune up and has action as long as the Brooklyn Bridge you have no chance of enjoyment or pleasure.
Great interview. Fascinating to see him play bass lines to some of the Zep classics.
Btw, aren't the members of Zeppelin a little too decent and thoughtful to have sold their souls to Satan? I am always impressed with how gracious they are.
