One moonhoaxer who (not very bright and I will not say in this comment as not to give him credibility) said that NASA murdered the entire crew of the Space Shuttle Challenger because in what he says Christa mcAuliffe was going to blow the whistle that NASA might have learned that these astronauts were about to expose the conspiracy that spaceflight was faked and needed to guarantee their silence.
we're lucky that we can take trips to space like we're going on vacation these days, with over 130 flights, 2 failures due to human error and ignorance is a pretty damm good record. As the space shuttle is decommissioned now, i wonder what new vehicle will take us to space
@dumapies There may not be a new one for a while...While the American public in general likes hearing about the space program, they're rarely fond of actually funding it...Anytime there's budget crisis (like now) NASA is usually the first to get cut. Unless the few private companies that are getting into the space business can fund the design and construction of new vehicles (instead of using old Russian rockets), it may be a while til we see the next generation of manned space vehicles...
@dumapies Many retired astroanauts are not sure there will be much spaceflight anymore, especially after the space station is splashed into the ocean when it gets too old.
what a shame ppl the 1st person who was not trained in space travel she was like us the most she was/ was a teacher and she paid 4 it with her life as well as all the rest of em paid with there lifes
Regan's Address to the nation that night was the most moving speech I ever remember he did... Now that was a president.. The guy we have now cut NASA's budget.. shhheeshhh...
@punkfish79 Reagan publicly advocated for allowing illegal aliens citizenship if they could prove they had jobs and paid taxes. Not exactly the kind of conservative hero that your wing nuts hold him up to be was he? Reagan was a fraud who should have been tried and convicted of treason.
Contrary to the flight dynamics officer's initial statement, the shuttle and external tank did not actually "explode".[15] Instead they rapidly disintegrated under tremendous aerodynamic forces, since the shuttle was slightly past "Max Q", or maximum aerodynamic pressure
This was a sad tragedy. I have been working on disassembling a laser inspection system from Thiokol from the space shuttle program, that the company I work for purchased from one of our close friends that lives in Utah. He bought it from a surplus auction down there in the early 90s. The system has a lot of neat little gadgets. We are very certain that it was used to inspect the SRB's after the disaster. It just makes me pause per thought that I am working on something that was part of this.
Because of the asshole managers. They all lost there jobs & they was forced to retire. Then In 2003 nasa had new asshole managers, who didn't learn from challenger. Now the shuttle Is being retired, nasa Is lucky they get to finish building the space station. Because there ignorance almost ruined that. They are careful now not to launch, with problems they should had done that with columbia. Another billion dollar shuttle lost, they can't afford to keep losing shuttles.
They are all kinds of tragedies In this country. Under a republican president a shuttle disaster In the 1980's under a republican president. And nasa has another tradegy on there hands. Under another republican president, more astronauts dead. Know the shuttle Is being retired.
I think every school in the nation was watching this as it happened. I was in second grade and I remember being very confused and very, very sad. NASA is an extremely dangerous job and Astronauts know that going in, but Christa McAuliffe wasn't an Astronaut. She was just a civilian trying to teach the nation. Its so very sad. The McAuliffe family never really recovered.
NASA didn't fake anything. If you use a decent telescope you can see the luna legs on the surface of the moon. Also people reflect lasers off the moon using mirrors which were placed there by the Apollo astronaughts.
@jackbuster I say youre the worst female actress of all time ! president ronald reagan put it right, and only he could have said the right words at the right time. god bless him and everyone who has died in the pursuit of whats right.
Lol.. why cant you accept that accidents happen and like everything else in life.. could be avoided if the ignorant penpushers listened to those that know there stuff. But like all americans its either those at the top to blame (presidents) or another country and not the fucking idiots that voted them in or other nations saying fuck you yanky trash. Like all things in life risks must be taken and accidents will happen its the way it is sadly.
It was not really a malfunction. it was caused by the wobbling of the aft field joints. the more this wobbles the more fuel leaks out. if this happened at high altitude this causes Depressurizing and sucks the pressure holding the tank in. when the fuel tank stand that no more - It explodes.
Singer John Denver had the original idea of "Citizens In Space" - it was Reagan that accepted this and for a while, Denver was scheduled to be the first citizen in space. Then Ronald Reagan decided to have a competition - and send a teacher into space!! Denver was alos scheduled to go to the Russian space station Mir - but 1 year of training - meant he would miss the birth of his daughter Jesse Belle. He declined!!!!

The engineer should have gone to the press before and not after if he was so certain of a failure. Very tragic.
