The sister gets angry about the lesbian accusations, but doesn't say anything about Jessica's drinking and drug problems. Especially since it was pretty clear on tv one time when Jessica was slurring her words.
If NBC was so aware of her drug use why didn't they step in and get her help, or at least offer her a way to leave with dignity? If she was that 'drugged up' before the update, her producer knew it. Anchors had to rehearse them several times to get the timing right. I wouldn't be surprised if the producer was told not to stop her from going on air. They hung her out to dry and knew it would end her career there. Pretty callous, IMO.
Gwenda Blair actually looks like she's happy that Savitch died. Look at the satisfied/twisted look on her face when she's talking about the broadcast mishap.
I googled this person and found that she's a professor at Columbia school of journalism. What a sad commentary on how some evil people seem to get all the breaks.
The years have not been good to her, either. And...she obviously hasn't learned how to tweeze her eyebrows in 22 years!

Jessica Savitch is my ALL-TIME favorite network news anchor. PERIOD. I'm 45. I've seen Cronkite to Couric. I don't doubt there might have been some drug use, but other than that last infamous news brief she was ALWAYS ON IT. I mean spectacular - like no one else. If she'd been using drugs the entire time this "author" claims, she would have gone downhill long before OCTOBER 1983. So I guess I take any unauthorized biography with a grain of salt.
Clearly the author of the book is a flaming lesbian. She was probably just angry that Jessica wasn't gay because she wanted to trib Jessica until she passed out. Just a theory.
I feel for the family...but what incredibly denial they live in. It was very widely known at NBC and in Washington that she was a cocaine user. (This was before she moved to New York.) So if it was all a lie - why didn't they sue?
Before you make blatant comments that you can't substantiate; have you actually done any research on the story of Jessica's death and the circumstances surrounding the immediate certainties of this time in her legacy? And, by the way, her family did RIGHTLY sue... And was awarded a lifetime salary that was befitting of a woman of her journalistic caliber. ($8,100,000.00).
@ATLSean74 Um, yes I have. And so could any monkey with an internet connection or a library card find the same information. You could also acquaint yourself with her contemporaries at the NBC News bureau in Washington - those who knew her well when she was covering the Senate, and who have first-hand knowledge that she was a cocaine user. As I said, I feel for the family. But the level of invective in their denial has probably ebbed over time as the emotion of her death subsided.
Regardless of whether the rumors are true or not, its EXTREMELY TACKY and DISRESPECTFUL to write a book with all that just a few years after the woman died so tragically. Making money by taking advantage of a dead woman is sick.
@7beers Jessica's sisters have every right to defend her, either out of denial or because they know what really happened behind the scenes. It could be out of love for their sister, or because of that old, overused notion that one shouldn't speak ill of the dead. (Tell the latter to every second bio writer out there - they make huge profits from dishing the dirt on dead celebs.) I really couldn't blame Lori Savitch in particular for protecting Jessica's memory, for better or worse.
Jessica Savitch was a true GROUND BREAKER!! I was only ten when she passed but I remember watching her as a child.. I won't dispute the supposed drug use, I wasn't there but to discount all she did because of one poor performance is insane!! Also, listen to Solead Obrien (sorry, sure that is not the correct spelling) she practically channels Jessica in her speech delivery!! Seriously!!
@hpmc9 - I agree. Can you believe this vulture (Gwenda Blair) now TEACHES journalism at Columbia University? This author of lies regurgitator of hearsay meets the standard that CU holds so high?
@hpmc9 zheck iut the book vt Vicky Wickham on Dusty Springfields life. A friend for over 30 years betrayed her, Rent it, don't buy it. With people like these who needs
"....Eyes that looked terrible, slurred speech, the smile disappearing....seemed like she had too much to drink?" 1:01 - 1 33. I could be very wrong in this...but those sound lik classic symptoms of MYASTHENIA GRAVIS (MG) to me. I've had MG since I was 4...(rare)...so I know! Most get MG in late 20s or early 30s...Ms. Savitch's age!
I hope that, even at this late date, this info can give some comfort 2 survivors. I'm a native NYer, & enjoyed Ms. Savitch's broadcasts very much! With Love....

@GFI888 - Back then, issues such as depression and drug use weren't handled the way they are now

It is kind of cold how the sister keeps describing her sister as the corpse.

the author seems to enjoy Jessica's tragedy, pretty sad commentary on her.

@rtschoolboy And it seems a lot of people (term used loosely) here share that enjoyment.

This woman is just envious that Jessica Savitch was more attractive and far more successful than this woman would ever be.

The person who wrote the book looks so gleeful about Jessica's meltdown.
On the other hand, her sisters are completely whitewashing her.
