Farcry can also be cured by using directx 9 mode (that's right, directx 10 is broken!) or using the "gfx_maxfps 30" command, which limits the FPS to a set rate. No need to use 30, use whatever works with you card. The more powerful the card, the higher number you can set!
Using DX9 or limiting fps, turning off vsync are all losing solutions. Getting it to work right the way it should was the goal. Overclocking once with RivaTuner using a constant clock fixed it. I think an OLD ati driver made a setting that stayed in the hardware for a LONG time. After using RivaTuner to overclock once, the problem has stayed gone, even after returning to overclocking in ATI's panel.
@DaveTheJackal Hey man! The Max FPS worked a charm for me! I have a 3.4 Quad i7, 8GB RAM and a 2GB ATI Card and I still got stuttering. Setting the max to 50 fixed it instantly! You should write a book :-P
This is caused by the PowerPlus powermanagement which causes the card's clock to vary dependent on workload. nVidia cards get it too, and it does depend a bit on the hardware setup you have and the brand of card (XFX, Asus etc). The easiest way to fix it is to use software that forces the card's clock to remain constant, e.g. Riva Tuner. Hope that helps!
... you can also Mod the card's bios if you want to or add some background process which will keep the card occupied (e.g. playing a movie on the desktop), sounds strange but it can work!
oh btw, the reason its less of an issue with nvidia is that the nvidia cards have an option to use openGL instead of DirectX 3d accelerators. The issue goes away with this option enabled.
I mean that the display "surges" forward and backward. If you watch the video, you'll see it "jumping" forward. It's far more apparent in person, but it's visible in the video.
This happens in wow as well. I used to think it was ATI cards. I have two 4870's in crossfire. Happens to me as well. It is less noticeable with the AI feature off. (if you have the same two cards crossfire turning off the AI feature won't disable it). My card is 10.1, and the issue is still there. Wonder if directx 11 in windows 7 corrects the issue.
i have an ATI 4870 1 gb DUAL SONIC EDITION , an E8400(3.0 ghz), 2 gigs of RAM(800) and a DFI Lanparty DK P35 T2RS motherboard and i'm still getting some lags in this game,
truth is i've set everything as high as possible on DX9 without the AA which is on 4x..if i get 2 more gigs of RAM and a cooler to OC the E8400 to 3.8 or 4. will the lags dissapear?
yea this is an annoying problem =/ either do what waste said or play in DX9. The game looks exactly the same, you just loose a couple of frames/sec which I highly doubt would matter on ur video card =P. Sigh@DX10 though, lets hope DX11 will actually be worth it this time.
uhhh no, yea its annoying that DX10 doesnt work correctly but its not 20+ frames at all. Run a few benchmarks or play the same area a few times and it will be more like 10frames you lose. Not 20+. Either way its annoying, and its happening with nvidia cards too. I dont think its a hardware/driver issue completely.
Rob...email me from here..since it won't allow me to post a proper comment.
Suffice it to say that its a Windows Vista 64 bug, could be Ubisofts problems but so far they have chosen to ignore us, its been literally on 1,000s of threads.
The "gfx_maxfps 30" is a weak solution..it still has a "micro stutter" I am fine in DX 9 mode.....this happens only in Far Cry 2

Of course this is ONE possible solution. There may be other causes but this worked for me!

THIS FIXED IT FOR GOOD! Thank you DaveTheSage.

I get the same thing on my 4650, Most things on High, textures, shaders and gemoentry on very high.
vSync -Off, AA - Off, Still get studdering! It's annoying! I also get it in Fallout 3, but not as much that it affects gameplay.

I'm running 4870 - catalyst 9.7

oh - you have to have vSync turned off as well...
cyanweb 2 years ago
The problem is with AA - try turning it off and the stuttering should almost stop...

Its nothing to do with settings nor system speccs, this is a problem alot of people have including me.
This would occur even with low settings at 800x640..

I'm still having this issue with Catalyst 9.1 and 9.3,
Assassin's Creed is even worse.
Is there any way to fix this?
do you know if it is software or hardware related?

A way to fix this is to type gfx_maxfps 30 into the console.

I have the microstutter and crash to desktop every 40 minutes or so.
Specs:
Intel Core i7 920
Sapphire 4870X2
Vista 64-bit
ASUS P6T DELUXE SKT-1366
Corsair 6GB (3x2GB) XMS3 1600MHz
9.1 seems to have had no effect.
will0787 3 years ago
same problem. I'll try 9.1 and see what it does for me, I have a single 4870 and the frame rate is bad enough as it is.
Try this console command, it helps but doesn't fix anything: gfx maxfps = 40 OR gfx maxfps = 50

It's not about how the game looks, the game is 20+ fps slower in DX9, not a couple.

In my computer there's also this problem. Specs:
Q9450 @ 3GHz
Palit HD 4870 1GB Sonic (I had MSI HD 4870 OC 512MB before, same problem with that card)
2x2GB DDR2 900MHz
Asus P5E X38
Vista 64-bit

I've got the same damned bug.
xeon e3110 @ 4ghz (1.21v)
4 gb corsair ddr2 890
asus p5q-pro
visiontek hd4870 (512)
vista 64bit
very, very disappointed by the frame rate stutter AND the crash2desktop every hour or so.
do you get the crash to desktop issue as well?
