  • in the key of g or a is the pattern always same?

  • :D :D :D :D

  • Excellent explanation of the the first 3 modes from a major scale.....Thanks.

  • Dan is most definitey The Man.

    Interesting video

    banjofred

  • ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzz

  • I have never heard of fuckin modes in my 1 year of playing guitar can someone plz explain it coz this douche doesnt even explain it well thanks

  • lol. get a book and figure it out. dont be lazy.

  • no need to even get a book if you know the notes in a major scale.....the modes are the postions of the scale....plus this video does a pretty good job of explaining what modes are

  • Great video. Well done!

  • I think modes will never be easy to understand but now I'm even more confused then before

  • lol

its easy. look.. example for parent of C major:

    cdefgabc - ionian (major)

    defgabcd - dorian

    efgabcde - phryigian (not "frigin")

    fgabcdef - lydian

    gabcdefg - mixiydian

    abcdefga - aeolian (minor)

    bcdefgab - locrian

  • this video is weak sause

  • This video is good if you dont already understand how modes work but for me relating everything back to the major scale just confusses matters, specially when you say a minor mode is a major wtf?. i kno its the same notes with a differnt root but its minor if it has a minor 2nd or 3rd...

  • This mode me sleepy!

  • mode mode mode mode mode mode mode mode FREAKIN MODES!!!!!!

  • Modes are important

  • modes are one of, if not, the most important thing to know for a songwriter.

  • que guitarra es esa hermano??

  • Wtf? You don't have to be exactly on scale with the riff in the background... Sometimes you have to be original and think outside the box, be yourself...

  • iam a music major man. you need some more detail to explain this. especially since i would assume most aspiring guitarist watching this arent music theory savy..

  • BLABLABLABLABLABLABLABLABLA

  • i dont know why people try to teach modes on in under 10 mins not enough detail is given and people just get confused.

  • Tonics (make mine with Gin); degrees (I prefer above 80); 8 notes above root and start on 2nd degree...yes...clear as M U D

I know it is technical stuff and not easy to understand...it is NOT easy to understand...and I don't understand it not withstanding this video.

  • thanx again dan you help a lot

  • shhhhh...secrets.

  • "Modes don't have to be confusing, but wait let me back up for a minute, because I just confused myself". Yeah...

  • AHAHAHA ur funny :D

    lol

  • Secrets? When was there some musical conspiracy? Come on! Play what you want to HEAR!

  • the real secret is that to b good u have to sell your soul to Jimi Hendrix. lol

  • Too late... someone already did it...

  • i didn't say theory wasn't important, i'm just saying that he's teaching a theory lesson. He's not gonna improv the whole time cause that won't teach anybody who doesn't know theory anything

  • I think this guy is just making more plainer for those who have never experienced modes or did not know what they are, alot of us advanced guitar player have already learn those modes but for the sake of those that have not I think he doing a good job at explaining

  • in the key of C MAJOR

the scale chord = mode of the key of C Major

    (C) MAJOR7 = C Ionian

    (D) minor7 - C Dorian

    (E) Suspended flat 9 - C Phrygian

    (F) Major7 #11- C Lydian

    (G) Dominant 7- C Mixolydian

    (A) minor7 - C Aeolian

    (B) Diminished - = C Locrian

  • That would be:

    (B) half diminished, since we're including the 7th.

  • haha i don't actually like emo music(the names a long story...) my favorite lead players r satch, vai, randy... ppl that know wat lead guitar is to say the least

  • ok ppl who r commenting on his guitar playing he's just teaching a theory lesson so he's not gonna do anything interesting that's outside of wat he's teaching

  • Very Helpful, I haven't studied music properly for a while so this was refreshing.

  • You really make it simple Dan. The words sound big but the concept is simple as long as you know your scales.

Hope the baby is doing great!!

  • i tried explaining this to a few people, and it's pretty hard. explaining that is. or perhaps the understanding of it.. anyway I wasn't very succesful.

  • Thank you! I learned a lot of teory from your lessons. I still have to practice... a lot! Thanks again!

  • modes will take you about a month to play like a shredder! they help so much!

  • I completely understand what your on about !!

You want me to put my guitar in the shed and bring out the triangle..(no video needed).

  • if i didnt already know what you were talking about dude i'd be so confused.

  • I totally understand what you are doing here but then I've been playing for about 10,000 years and listen to A LOT of jazz. I think your approach is confusing to those who don't have that kind of experience. I've provided some suggestions to a better approach.

You also want to get into using modes on the changes rather than using a single mode for the entire progression. That just gets boring once you learn to play it.

  • This concept REALLY doesn't take a lot of thinking to understand. The whole point of using modes is to SIMPLIFY.

    1. Use a visual aid to explain the concept of starting your scale at a particular interval of the key scale.

    2. Play the scale while someone else plays the nice little major progression OR, pre-tape that progression and then play the scale choices after you explain each. Show how one gets variety by playing modes over a progression.

  • i don't get it

  • very good thank you dan

  • Dan,

Thanks bro. This was most helpful. The only thing I wished you had covered in depth is WHEN we use these modes. I know G Ionian is the Major scale and works with any of the 6 diatonic chords in G Major but what about the other modes? When do we use them? What styles go best with these modes? Nicely done.

  • You confuse people! I understand what you are TRYING to say. G dorian IS F major starting on G, but you wouldn't play that scale in G MAJOR! You would play that over F major or G Dorian Minor. G Phyrigian is NOT B Major. G Phrigian is G Phrigian which is an Eb Major scale(which is a third down not B which is a third up) starting on G. G is not even a not in the B major scale so how can it be a mode of G???

  • Man. Thanks

  • Very nicely done. Keep up the good work. Your lessons have been helpful to so many of us, just trying to find clear explanations, that many guitar teachers can't seem to explain in an uncomplicated way. Thanks

  • very helpful and clear explainations

  • stfu lolololololo

  • Go look at vinnie moore(great lesson on modes)it will tell you more

  • Dan:

Thank you for explaining the modes and I really am getting it and more importantly applying it to my daily practice.

  • Correct I dont know much about modes i may have got a few bits wrong so i will try again B Phrygian should be played over a B Progression so you can play the Gmaj scale over a B progression

  • AdvJoeMoney

B Phrygian scale is B-C-D-E-F#-G-A-B, the "prhygian" indicates you that it comes from Gmaj, "Gmaj starting in B" equals "B Phrygian".

If I play a Bmaj scale (as you said) over the Gmaj harmony, the scale of Bmaj is B-C#-D#-E-F#-G#-A#-B, which obviously has nothing to do with Gmaj... so if you play this scale over a Gmaj harmony you'll sound completly out of tune.

That means either you don't know modes or your music must be horrible...

  • AdvJoeMoney

NO NO NO! G Major starting in B is G PHRYGIAN! B Phrygian is the third mode in B Major. It is NOT the same scale as G Major. The first letter indicates the key you are in.

  • Wtf? In G major, the phrygian mode there would be B phrygian. It IS the same scale as G major with a different root note! WTF are you talking about?

  • That's stupid, if you play Bmaj scale you're not playing G Phrygian, you're playing Bmaj... that's how "easy" it is.

  • Is that a Tom Anderson guitar?

  • Yes..!!

  • Great, Thank you...........

  • justin sandercoe and desi serna is much better than this..lol,,,,,,,

  • Dan,

Do you have affiliate program for LGS course?

  • Great explaination and simplification of modes. Nicely done as usual.

  • ohh thats nice. tnx dan

  • lol...tuning the guitar while teaching a lesson. I bet he'd stop in the middle of a song just to tune his guitar and then continue playing. Anyways good job dan!!! I actually understood that somewhat. Just have to apply it now.

  • Dan, This is a very good video and your descriptions on the different modes were very good, a lot of young guitarists would get a lot from this video if they would sit still long enough and practice so it would sink in.

  • Always a pleasure to learn with you Dan

  • Great video Dan! It helps me a lot. Thank you for teaching!

    -Viktor

    From Yevaephss

  • Hey Dan,

thanks for sharing and carefully teaching us the modes and especially its free! but i still have to absorb it and learn it, its not that easy but at least the theory helps and will will buid to last and make us greater musicians.

    yours,

    Alden

  • Hi Dan,

As I've said before every time a mail comes in from you about a new tip or a lesson it takes me to some kind of a timeout. to look for something new or just things I forgot or gives me new ideas how to look at things and to try another way of playing.

Thanks a lot and send more...

  • Cool Video... It's always better to have a practical explanation of Theory. Showing HOW It fits is always more helpful then telling somebody well That's the THEORY. Great stuff..
